Steve Smith a Raven!

384 posts in this topic

It is unfortunately. The picks are largely based on contract size and what somebody averages annually. Guys like Verner or Talib that got 10+ mil. per year will be in the 3rd round range. But Jones is definitely a 4th. Ihedigbo might be a 5th if everything goes well. Oher signed a hefty deal, he might net us a 4th but I doubt it. Cody probably a 7th. Graham probably a 5th and Dickson maybe a 6th or 7th. Just my guesses but it's gonna be in the ballpark.

you wont get that many. They only give 32, it may even be capped to four per team

You're right but I was just trying to sort of rank these guys to see what we might get for them. There's still so much that can affect how many picks we'll get, depending on who we are going to pick up as free agents and so on.

All I know is if smith has a great game....Ravens will make first take as more than a minor topic as Stephen A Smith loves some steve smith.

Hopefully if/when flacco has an off game Steve Smith doesn't go running off at the mouth as he is pretty good at drawing media attention in even a small market. It will be interesting to have that fire cracker get under-skin offensive player on our roster....our Hines Ward so to speak.

"He sucks. I wouldn't let him throw me a paper bag sandwich."

"Ice up, son"

Glad to have the well spoken, Steve Smith here. Should be a fun season guys. I hope his energy is contagious. Could sure use some of that spark back on defense.

I really like that signing. hope he can teach some of our young guys how to succeed in the nfl.

He is a great player. he will have a 1000 yard season for us.

I am curious to know how this will effect our draft strategy.

like last year everything is heading onto the right direction for us. Ozzy got it done again. what an offseason so far!!!

Honestly ... Kind of torn with this signing. I'm not soo fond of players who turn against teammates . Smith has a history of acting out and even a bit immature at times. We're talking about a 35 y/o man.. I sort of hope he can NOT start turmoil in the locker room .

Steve Smith the player , probably has some years left... Let's hope he doesn't become disenchanted ...

Harbaugh sold smith on the fact that he can be himself....

Shockingly, Verner only got like $6.6 million

Verner is a Zone guy.  and not a lot of teams run zone anymore, tough market out there for them.

Flacco better be organizing more than 1-2 workouts with his WR's thats for sure. precision takes time and effort to put in that kind of time. if Joe can do that with his WR's there really is no limits to what he can do..... i mean ( and i know its Manning BUT) Peyton Manning and how quickly he got IN Sync with his WR's? he took the necessary time to develop that relationship . Flacco needs to put in that kind of work with his WR's to really get on the same page. Im not saying BE manning but GET on the same page as your other guys. your only as good as those guys can catch.

This is a two way street and it would seem that veteran receivers would adapt much more quickly to a ball thrown by any QB. I doubt there will be any issues with Smith/Flacco.

Torrey Smith

Steve Smith

Jacoby Jones

Dennis Pitta

Marlon Brown

2014 Draft Pick

I like it.  Address the offensive line and run scheme and this team will seriously compete again.

I see where you are coming from and I definitely agree. Arm talent and ability is one thing, but playing QB takes mental preparation to become great. I think that is something Flacco realized after his toughest season in his career, and will be better from going through that struggle.

i dont anticipate anything either between the two, but like everything in life, in order to get a system going with your WR's both new and old, you got to put in the time and effort to be that type of player, so that the offense as a whole can be the best of its potential. chemistry doesnt start on gameday and mandatory practices and OTA's , although thats part of it for sure, it starts when the Franchise QB starts organizing workouts with his WR core to get a pattern down, get a feel. not 1-2 workouts either, but like as the season inches closer, more and more so that when its mandatory? you already have that system in place more or less.

Sure, but I don't get what you're complaining about. We heard the news that Joe wants to have a private workout with his receivers about a week ago. Did you expect Flacco to run drills already? Kubiak still was working on the new playbook, clearly it wouldn't make any sense for the Ravens receivers to prepare for routes, that they won't have to run under the new system.

I don't even get where that "Flacco has no work-ethic"-myth comes from. Joe spend extra time with his brand new receivers last season for example and those are not the first instances of Flacco putting in extra work that I can recall.

The reason why the Mannings and Bradys of this world look so good and Joe Flacco looked so awful last season is the OL. The Raven offensive line was horrible. Not saying that Joe was on fire last season, but he was the 4th most sacked QB and he had the worst running game in the league. The Pats and Broncos might be "throw first teams" (not really considering the way NE played the playoffs), but they still have A running game (what did we have? 1 yard with every rushing attempt).

Getting Monroe was a good begining, but we still have an 8-8 OL standing in front of Joe, you know; the one, that crippled him by the end of the season. If the Ravens can't get anyone solid in FA, they HAVE TO invest HEAVILY in the OL in the draft...and no Cyrus Kouandjio.

Yeah, I think there has already been talk of Joe organizing workouts, but it was mentioned how difficult it might be because of everyone living in different places and having their own off season agenda.  Hopefully they can coordinate and make it happen.

My thoughts exactly.

It's pretty obvious at this point that we won't be able to compete for Mack and I'm not sure there is a suitable RT out there, so it would seem that the draft will need to supply fresh troops. And who knows, with Kubiak on board maybe Gino and Wagner shine. Whatever it is, the O line has to be fixed.

was not complaining, your taking it the wrong way. fyi. just trying to get the point across that Flacco has now been given the weapons, and is the leader of this offense, take charge and get those workouts in.

I really hope the Ravens focus on offense in this years draft and I already don't like how we still need a FS. If I would have to give anybody most of the blame for that 8-8 season, it probably would be Ozzie. We spend too many draft picks on defense last year. Our first 4 were all defensive players, 3 of them barely seen the field and only one of them was made a starter, after Huff forced the team to by stinking it up.

We already invested so much into the defense in FA and the offense paid for it via the Boldin trade, I just couldn't believe we didn't go for a WR in that draft (clearly we lacked the depth at that position we thought we had).

I know, I've been writting this all over the forum and the Ravens have shown no interest in the guy, but Chris Clemons would be a great signing for us. Any draft pick that doesn't help the offense this season is pretty much a wasted pick, imho.

In short, I don't think Flacco has that many weapons still.

Oz can't predict the future. There was no way we knew that Pitta would be injured or JJ. We also picked up Clark, who we all thought at the time was great. They also said they wanted to give the younger guys a chance. Marlon Brown was once greatly thought of before an injury.

Read between the lines.

with us resigning our key free agents and securing the WR spot, the OL is the position i think they'll target in order to upgrade the OL.  they have Yanda and Monroe , Oher just departed, as stated earlier, blocking upfront means flacco has the time to survey the field and deliver the football, no O-Line? no effective run game or passing attack.

Steve should however provide that 3rd and long, 3rd and short, reliable WR we need to make the necessary catches to keep the drives alive, while Torrey, Jacoby, and Marlon keep the defense on its heels along the perimeter , and Pitta roams the middle.

I agree, all we have done is add an old Steve Smith to last year's roster, so it's not like he has this huge arsenal to work with. But if we can fix this OL, and everyone stays healthy, what we have now should be good enough. After all, we won the SB with a nearly identical cast.

However, if Steve Smith still has one more big year left in him, then this season at least, Flacco has everthing he needs. A beast #1, a good #2 deep threat (Torrey), and a reliable TE in Pitta. Of course, that is under the assumption we will have at least a mediocre running game and OL, not what we saw last season.

We do get KO back, so that's also a boon.  But we don't have a center, and we have very little depth.  We have one TE.
