Love the guy and happy we kept him. I just feel we overpaid and gave too long of a deal.

Its not a bad deal in terms of the financial committment, because they can get out of it easily if it doesn't pan out.

But lets not kid ourselves... the offense will be more effective if Jacoby is on the field less. We know this for several reasons...

1. We intend to run the ball more, and run the ball more effectively. If Joe is throwing it less, it means Jacoby is on the field less. The most prevalent times that Jacoby was on the field were on 3rd and long (which occurs due to penalties and a lack of a running game) and in the hurry up offense.

2. I think every single person on these boards expects the Ravens to add at least one more viable receiver this offseason, whether thats through FA or the draft, and I personally think it will be two.

3. As such, whoever we add is very, very likely to be ahead of Jacoby on the depth chart, for obvious reasons.

Therefore, Jacoby is at best the #4 WR, and the #5 option in the passing game, behind Smith, Pitta, Brown and at least one person that we add this offseason. So assuming that we are able to run the ball better and that Kubiak doesn't design a 5 wide, go-route based passing attack, can somebody tell me precisely when they expect Jacoby to be on the field on offense? I mean I'd consider 10 snaps a game to be optimistic based on what I see.

If he's on the field, in my opinion, the offense isn't doing what its supposed to be doing. We are either playing from behind, or we are in 3rd and long often, neither of which is a good thing.

If nothing else... I'd be slightly worried if I were a big supporter of guys like Brown and Mellette, because if they are competing for #2 or #3 WR roles, and they struggle, they will have an extremely short leash.

If we add even one pass catcher, I don't see how Mellette is even active on gamedays without injuries. And remember, some of you want to add Owen Daniels as another TE option too. Depth is always good, but I think some of you overvalue what certain players on this team bring to the offense.

I am far from saying that Jacoby is going to be a starter again I agree that the Ravens will add a receiver. I am slowly kind of liking the Steve Smith idea depending on how much money he asks for. I also have been preaching for Daniels to join the Ravens. But the reason Jacoby didn't do too well last season was because of 1. injuries and 2. the offensive line like every other receiver.. I think the play action will serve him and the other Raven receivers very well. I also kind of hope the Ravens trade back a little bit and try to get Brandin Cooks and another pick later in the draft to also add to the receiving core. Since Tandon Doss left and I believe Deonte Thompson will be cut that the Ravens then in turn will add 2 receivers.

In Ozzie we trust..................NT Sopoaga released by the Pats would fit if the Cody experiment is over. D. Smith is 31,what term contract is he looking for and is it viable to give him guareenteed money & years? Rolando McClain could be a "sleeper" and a bargain if he lives up to his 1st rd talent and wants to play. Could Mellete be the WR we are looking for? Ozzie is a fox in the hen house this time of year but I question keeping a waning T-sizzle. Hope I'm wrong but _______ from Minnesota is a FA who can rush the passer.

The guy calls for your attention during kick and punt returns, and there are only a couple of guys in the league that do that. Having a serious scoring threat every time the ball is kicked is a huge advantage. Good signing.

And thats the point... why do fans keep referencing his accomplishments as a receiver, which are minimal to begin with, when his offensive role on this team even at this very moment appears to be very, very, very minimal? Again, if we add nobody at WR the rest of the offseason, its difficult to see even an average-sized role for Jacoby in this offense.

Its not like defenses don't know what Jacoby does. He's not going to run all the routes on the route tree, and he's going to be a player that attacks the safeties deep down field. Of course, we already have another player who does that also, so as we saw last season, going deep all the time doesn't really work well when the defense doesn't respect what you do anywhere else on the field.

Its hard for me to envision a scenario where Jacoby has an increased role on offense from what he had in 2013, and the Ravens being a contending team.

Imho, D. Smith and Rolando McClain together would be ideal. Gives us 1yr to get McClain in the feel of the Ravens way. I say give D. Smith a 1yr deal while getting the bargain from Rolando is the answer. #ijs #imho

I seriously doubt D. Smith will accept another one year contract. He can likely get multi-year from several teams.

As much as I would like Rolando to come back this season another report came out this morning saying he isn't ready to return to football and is still working on his degree which he should finish in the summer. But he has said even after then he is not sure if he is completely ready. But I agree that Daryl Smith needs to be signed.

I think Steve Smith would be a great pickup. Then draft another receiver in the draft to let Steve mentor. I think Steve Smith can give us a good 2 or eve 3 years maybe.

He got around 500 yards two years ago when there was a decent O-line and better play calling than last season. For a third string wide receiver I would say that is pretty good. Considering every time he has the ball he has a huge potential for making plays. Of course not as big on the offensive side of things but he still does...

IMHO Jacoby is a good signing for 3 reasons. Firstly, his great kick return ability. You have to realize that a return TD is equivalent to a sustained 80 yard scoring drive. So that equals say 7 runs averaging 5 yards per carry plus 6 receptions averaging 7.5 yards per catch. Not bad stats if you look at it that way. Secondly, most of the deep throws last year, Torrey or Jacoby were behind the defenders, but Joe seriously under threw them. Finally, Jacoby ran a lot more routes than ever before and looked to be pretty effective with them. His stats, if interpolated out to playing full time for 16 games would be significant. Yes, we will add receivers, but Jacoby is a pretty good insurance policy.

I am very afraid to be a fan of an AFC team when you hear the Patriots signed Revis and are talking to Browner right now... If they sign him also the Patriots defense won't be as bad as before... If the Patriots also find another offensive target besides Gronk I would be afraid of them..... Also Ihedigbo just signed with the Lions.

@ Trevorsteadman i agree with you... the patriots and denver will be the top dogs in the afc.

Patriots have been for a long time and the Broncos will be until Manning leaves. But I wouldn't bet on them in the Superbowl because it usually is a team that they do not expect to win it all that ends up winning it all... Even the Seahawks were underdogs going into the Superbowl. Interesting to see how it all pans out this is only day three of free agency I wonder who the Ravens will add to their roster. Who knows maybe after all their moves they may look like a contender again. First step is to fix that offensive line.

Little mad about Art and Corey leaving but I'm extremely happy we signed Eugene, Pitta and Jacoby. Our next priority should be signing a WR/C and bringing back D.Smith and Oher if we can

Add TE to that list and I agree. Ravens only have one as of now. I think they need to draft one and pick one cheap off of the FA if possible or maybe put a few more pennies into a better tight end that knows how Kubiak runs his offense named Owen Daniels. Of course only if the price is right.

The Ravens might have a surprise Tight End with Furstenburg form last years practice squad. I guess we will have to wait & see if they move him up this year or let him go.

That just makes it that much more fun to see their expressions when they lose.

Following the herd is rarely the correct move.

This is a HUGE signing and personally what I was hoping we would do. Jacoby is a Raven at heart and he belongs here. Thank you OZZIE!!!!

Agreed and don't forget the offensive line. Most blitzed quarterback never had time to throw it deep where Torrey Smith and Jacoby Jones thrive. If the Ravens line becomes solid, mark my words, I think Torrey Smith will become a top 5 in receiving yards.

The passing game was a huge problem last year, not just the line. I think harbs even said it in an interview, a lot of things went wrong on the offensive side of the ball, and it wasn't just the line. Though they did play a big part. BUT Flacco missed just about every deep throw he made. I like Flacco, he was/is a great QB, but he didn't play too well lastyear. Hopefully this year he does better.
