[News] Ravens Reach Four-Year Agreement With Jacoby Jones

270 posts in this topic

I like Jones a lot as a returner, but doesnt really inspire any confidence in me as a WR. To me this is a 3.5 mil per year guy as a returner. I got mixed feelings about this one. I will say that i doubt he plays all 4 yrs of under this contract.

Agreed. To me, all this signing means is he have an expensive kick returner who needs to earn his money, otherwise, he's essentially one a one year deal.

This signing changes absolutely nothing about our need for at least one more quality pass catcher on this team. In an ideal world, we would see a whole lot less of Jacoby on offense in 2014.

On board with this sentiment ... I see no reason to think he won't earn his money, because he earned every penny of his money on his last contract with us. He's the best return guy in the league and that's been a devastating weapon at key points in his time with us.

And it is not as if he has no value at the WR position. If we get a guy like Smith (and carry forward with a young draft pick who is cut from that same cloth), then I see him going back to the role he had when Boldin was here. And we all can recall him hitting those select few killer plays that make him all worthwhile (aka Mile High Miracle and Super Bowl highlight spin move).

On top of being a guy we can roll out there when we need to spread things out, he's a viable backup in case Torrey gets hurt. That keeps us having at least one burner on the field at all times.

The main thing about Jacoby for me is, I really dont want to see him as our #2 receiver. 3,4,5 whatever i dont care. Just as long as hes no higher than 3.

3.5M/year is exactly what I would have offered Jacoby. If we manage to find a way to sign Alex Mack we would have 3 top notch lineman locked up. We just need Osemele to come back healthy, and to add a RT which is the easiest position to fill.

I have a very strong feeling that Steve Smith is going to land in Baltimore.

I want us to land Mack, and Steve Smith and I would think this as a very, very successful F/A. And thats without the magic the Ozzie pulls off with finds like Corey Graham and others(sad to see him good)

Also an under the radar guy id like to see back is Josh Wilson he left us for the Redskins and is now a free agent would live to see him fill that role Corey left.

Here's another thing to consider with everyone mentioning the one need we have of safety...
Webb played safety in college (as well as DB).  If we don't find anyone worth while in FA, they could slide him back there.  We won the Super Bowl with other corners.  It's possible to do with Jimmy on one side, Corey Graham/ Chykie Brown on the other.

Thoughts?

The NFL Network reporter covering the Giants was so excited that they were going to sign JJ before he left their building today. So, I was surprised we signed him, but happy we did. He is my lady's favorite Raven, so she will be watching the games with me for at least another year!

I really dont understand why people want us to sign Mack so bad. Unless he ends up being a Hall of Fame Center how do you justify paying 8-10 mil a yr for a center? Where am I getting 8-10 mil a yr? The top 5 centers now are averaging around 7 mil a year. Mack has a transition tag. Which means the Ravens have to offer Mack a contract that the Browns are unwilling to match. So unless by some miracle the Browns arent willing to match a 5-7 mil a yr contract its gonna cost us A LOT of money. Im a HUGE HUGE HUGE believer in games are won and lost in the trenches. But unless I see Mack as a HALL of Fame Center I cant justify paying him or any center that much money. And Im not that hardcore of a football fan to sit there and watch center play on Sundays, so i have no idea if Mack is on that level.

Mack is one of the top 5 centers in the league.  The best teams in the league have some of the best centers in the league and we would also be taking him away from a rival team.  He wont get 8-9 mil  a year without having some type of contractual clauses that allow him to make more.  Such as probowl honors and etc etc.  Hes worth the effort to try and get.  You never know til you go out and try.  Mack would be a great fit here and hes a smart guy, handled our line and many other teams defensive lines extremely well.

I get that Mack is ARGUABLY the best center in the league right now and yes I would LOVE for us to sign him, but i gotta stick with Ozzie's mantra of right player right price. And I personally would never sign a center for that much money at the current Salary Cap. But a lot fans have this mindset of sign the biggest free agent every year at every [profanity deleted] position. And then you mention the words Salary Cap and its almost as if they're response would be,"What's that? I've never heard of this concept before." For example earlier there were people on this site talking about signing Byrd, Mack, Monroe, AND Smith. Give me a break.

haha Ive seen the same comments. Some ppl just dont understand the game very well and say some crazy things. Its unrealistic and at this point its either choose to pay for a center or for D smith cause no way your getting both. Im guessing we have about 12-13mil in salary cap space left now. Theres room for another long term deal but other than that we cant sign a bunch of expensive long term deals now.

Statistically speaking, the FA spending has not yielded much in terms of winning games. Miami spent 146 million last year on FA's and won 1 more game than the year before. The list goes on. Having said that, I like Mack for two reasons. 1)Not sure Gradkowski is the long term answer, and many believe he was a big reason for the poor Oline play. 2) He is proven, and leaves a big hole in a division foe. We kinda missed the boat on safety so maybe a wide out is next. Ozzie will make us better one way or another!!

That safety boat already sailed across the sea. haha I never even heard a rumor about safety which makes me believe the ravens didnt want to get into the free agent market for them. The only real ball hawk was byrd and he was way to much for us. I think they have been planning on fixing the safety hole through the draft. As for gradkowski, Im almost certain a lot of the blown calls on the line was bc of him. Guys didnt trust him you could tell by the comments that were released about communications errors all season. The other problem was turn-style Oher who just let guys blow by him and jump offsides all the time.

Somebody answer me this, pls : Why couldn't KO be being considered for C ? He's a very bright man, athletic and strong. Maybe I'm missing something but KO be could a handy long-term solution.

That doesn't say much. Main things are big brain and ability to block. *Both* may or may not be with those two men. Given how quickly KO picked up T then G duties, he appears to possess both.

quite honestly I would rather have Mack than any other skill player on the market right now. If a top quarterback (which i believe flacco CAN be) has time, serviceable receivers get the job done. If we have a stout line... our need for a crazy talented receiver is minimal. Year after year brady and manning (i get flacco is neither one of those guys) throw to no names and have tons of success... why, well because they have ample time.
