Ravens re-sign WR Jacoby Jones - 4 years

271 posts in this topic

Jacoby has made tremendous improvements as a receiver. I saw him get the ball in a way even Torrey.didn't at times.

I know. It's a shame he got hurt because I think he would have proven all these comments wrong.

It's less than a $2M cap hit for crying out loud. Bargain!

How can a SB winning QB not win the MVP after he played lights out? I stand by it. Your comment was silly. Jacoby is a great kick returner though and I'm glad he's back.

Well, we all know what a Flacco homer I am, but if someone thinks JJ deserved the SB MVP just as much, I could not argue with that in the least. It was pretty sick watching Flacco carve them up on one side of the field and JJ on the other. LOL

How is Marlon Brown "awful?"

Do you feel comfortable going into next season with Marlon Brown and Torrey Smith as our starting wideouts? Would we even be considering drafting a wide out early if we were?

Dude 14 mil. for 4 years is nothing. You act like we're paying him 10 mil. per year to mow the lawn. He has made so many bigplays for us, he's one of the key reasons we won the SB, he is a game changer who can score a TD week in week out and make bigplays happen. And you're complaining about paying him 14 mil. for 4 years? Punters make more than that! This is a bargain.

Like I've said, it's not that bad of a contract. But he's worth the vet minimum. Not a penny more. So many big plays? TD week in week out? Hilarious. Watch a full season of Ravens ball before you say that. Yes, the mile high miracle and the couple of plays in the superbowl was awesome. But it doesn't change the fact that he's an abysmal receiver that you can't rely on when he's on the field.

The contract isn't bad at all.  The guaranteed money is very low.  Most of the money is in base salary.  If something happens and we want to move on, we can do so with a minimal impact on our cap.

In my mind, for a guy that can only be a kick returner/situational deep threat who's turning 30, it should be vet minimum.

I don't want to see Jacoby out there on the field besides kick returns and 3rd and 20 with 44 seconds left trailing by 7.

The point is, Jacoby is an abysmal receiver who was part of an abysmal wide receiver group last year. By drafting a guy like Beckham, that many of you are clamoring, who has ability as an returner too. What the hell is the point of having Jacoby then? Could've so easily been replaced and upgraded through the draft or getting someone even cheaper in FA.

He's worth more than the vet minimum.  Look around the league and how many returners are signed for the vet minimum?  None that truly stand out at what they do.  Jacoby may be 30, but he's one of the best at what he does.

Bringing Jacoby back on such a cheap deal is a no brainer.  You aren't going to get anything better that will be any cheaper.

Waste of money. Trindon Holiday would have taken a lot less to fill the same role. Smh

Holiday has fumbled the ball 10 times over the last 2 years (5 each year) and was not as good in 2013 as he was in 2012.

That's why he's unemployed and likely to only get the minimum.

Agreed.

We should take back the boards. Shouldn't have to run to the dump thread for peace.

Used to have intelligent conversations here, even when we disagreed.

$3.5 per year, Hmmm...anyone know Jacoby's cap number? Im going to guess around $2-3M. This move makes me think we are considering drafting a WR in round 1 or 2.

We won't so I'm not sure why this question is even relevant.

Jones is a play maker. His 4 or 5 game changing plays each year have been the difference in some games from winning and losing.

What is the breakdown of his contract? I suspect it's back loaded and we'll drop him in 2 or 3 years.

going to be honest here..he wasn't a big requirement.

It wasn't, but he gives us the second vertical threat we need in our offense - this allows us to pretty much take any receiver we want in the draft.  We have 2 guys now in Torrey and Jacoby that can go deep outside the numbers.  And Jacoby is special as a returner.  His skill set can't really be found a lot of places.  Besides, the one thing Joe has never had in his career is stability at the receiver position.  Torrey going into his 4th year is the longest Joe has ever had a receiver - nobody else lasted here more than 3 seasons.  Now he'll get the opportunity to build some serious chemistry with Torrey, Jacoby, and Dennis for the long-haul.

Yep. If you understand how contracts work you'd know that he is actually coming very cheap.

Still 4x more than we had to pay for above average returner. Pretty much all we did is buy name brand cheerios over store brand cheerios

Look at the guaranteed money, not the total money.  Guaranteed is all that matters in this case.  This is likely a 2 year contract.

I see the guaranteed money. I realize what the contract is. My problem isn't with the contract value itself. My problem is with the comparative value of the contract to what it would have cost to get a substitute. The market basically says we paid 4x more than market price for a situational deep threat.

Vet min is about 0.5 million (give or take 200k based on experience I believe)

Jacoby's cap hit is a little under 2 million.

Everyone who is hating should answer this question....

Other than JJ who is on our roster that is a playmaker on offense and ST?

People seem to forget that he is actually a pretty good wide receiver. I've said this 100 times and I'll say it again. Whenever he has the ball in his hands, there is a legitimate chance for him to go all the way for a touchdown.

But what substitute are you going to get?  Jones is a premier returner, not some run of the mill guy.  They don't come along too often.

A deal that's fair as it gets for both sides. I don't think we're done addressing the position but it's nice to have WR3/returner crossed off of list of needs. ...Glad to have Jacoby back!

Other reasons this makes sense is because Joe has building chemistry with him. Having 3 familiar faces in Smith, Pitta & Jones is good for while we revamp our receiving core. We wouldn't be able to replace his play on special teams, and he's familiar with Kubiak and the locker room.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him cut as soon as his play falls off but hopefully we'll get at least 2-3 good years from him. I think Marlon will still be valuable for us down the line and if nothing more he's great depth.

Holiday

Holiday is a pure return man with a fumbling problem. He is no where near a replacement because he can't cover all the bases jacoby can.

We paid Jacoby WR3 type money for a WR3/4 dynamic deep threat who is also an awesome KR. Whats the problem?

This was a great signing for a dynamic and exciting player who has improved tremendously as a receiver. We're fortunate to be able to keep him. Upgrading and stabilizing the O line will make JJ, all the receivers and Joe much better in 2014.

With this deal done it's time to get D. Smith wrapped up and find the guys to improve at C and RT.

Holiday

You mean the guy that was non tendered because he fumbles the ball constantly?

I am very happy we were able to keep this guy....  So many people don't like him. They want MORE...  personally,  I think he's a good guy to have on your team, period........

You can count on a couple of really big plays in tight games from this guy. That is an asset you do not want to be without.
