Brain Injury awareness month

1 post in this topic

So today I was sitting here thinking I mentioned it on the dump thread but it really deserves its own because I wanted to share you  my fellow fans and friends .  I figured if I gave you some insight into my life it might spread some awareness  and understanding especially as it relates to people you may run into or may know including some of our players who suffered massive amounts of concussions like Quadry Ismael .

Pretty much my Diagnosis is Acquired brain injury from Hydrocephalus with Nonverbal Learning Disability .   I have spent most of my life confused for some one who has autism ,  or told I was Lazy or acting out for attention .  Brain injuries are tricky to live with  , up until my shunt failure in 2013 I had been mislabeled and misdiagnosed with several other ailments .  I was told at age 19 I had schizophrenia it later turned out to be Frontal Lobe and Temporal Lobe Neural Storms aka Seizure like Events causing Hallucinations and paranoia . I lived with other issues from the injury I write with my right instead of my left and am left dominant because injury is on the right side of the brain.  I have minor issues with small anger outbursts that I have learned to live with.  Also as stated in another thread I have issues with Storms and Barometric disturbances that cause migraines slurring and walking issues .

As this is not common with all people with my condition the symptoms are different with each individual. But the challenges are met with stiff opposition from average people with normally good intentions by thought but the actions lead less fruitful results.  Some things I can tell you that do not help people like me who struggle with this .

1: Buck up and  get over it -  Some one struggling with a brain thats already traumatized sees this not as a challenge but a slight .

2: Its all in your head - While Physiologically true  ,  It makes the person feel like you think they are making it up for sympathy .

3: Let me do that for you - While yes you want to help the wording sends flags and reminds the person the injury has limited them and if they are already having a bad day it could send them into a depression spiral.

4: Why don't you just grow up and act right. - people with a brain injury often regress years behaviorally in some areas some have impulse issues depending on where the injury is  this makes the person feel like its there fault they can not act they way you believe or society believes they should  ,  enough of this talk is what drives many in the ABI/TBI community to suicide because they feel the injury will never make them acceptable to be around and thus unwanted .

There are many more feel free to add them as posts and post your experience whether personal or with a friend or colleague or family member makes sure though you get their approval .  I hope we can all begin to talk about this as a fan base  and maybe do something at the stadium one day as Johns Hopkins is one of the leaders in brain trauma study.

Until next time , Be kind to each-other  help those in need .
