Pernell McPhee

keep him. He's a good player just needs to stay healthy.

John Simon is never going to start for us. He's a special teamer at best.

McPhee is good depth.  Even hurt he added more value than Terrence cody did who was basically a no show after his rookie year (despite some posters trying to give him a pass because of injury and weight management).  He's a dude I'd trust to suit up and go out on the field and make plays if need be, just hope he stays healthy

What makes you think John Simon will never start? He seems like an intelligent guy and a hard worker. He could really blossum into a good player imo.

Considering all the player's we've got he'd be the 6th option at OLB.

We got McClellan, Suggs, Dumervil, Upshaw and Mcphee.  He's not starting over any of those guys unless its a Preseason game imo. And in terms of speed and athleticism I don't see him beating out any of those guys.

I hear he's a very hard worker, but so are a lot of guys that didn't den make it into the NFL. I know some people have compared him to Jarret Johnson who I love but I don't see it. At least not yet. At this point Simons just raw and will have a tough time cracking the starting lineup unless we get several catastrophic injuries one year.

He obviously won't be starting this year, but Suggs and Dumervil won't be around forever. I could see him winning a starting job sooner or later.

I would move McPhee back to DE. He has much greater impact there. Simon could be a rotational OLB sooner than later. Suggs and doom should be rotated more to keep them fresh anyway. Also Simon could easily be here long after those guys are gone.

I think the real issue with McPhee, beyond his health, is that he's really an undersized DT.  He's just too small to play that role in any avenue other than pass-rush situations, which we can and do occasionally use him for.  Of course those situations come when you know they are passing, meaning we would be winning. It's also pretty tough to start over some pretty versatile and talented players like Ngata, A.Jones, and Canty.

Moving him to OLB last year seemed like an attempt to add value to him as a more versatile player since scheme wise he doesn't have a future at stating DT, or a high place in the rotation last year at DE.  This year it may pay dividends in that there are a number of different ways we can use him and given he has worked hard and made progress he should be more efficient in multiple roles.  It's not like we don't run a 4-3 at times, and if he can play DT, DE, and OLB it's a benefit to our chess board even if he's a bit buried in the depth chart and rotations.

DT skills and talent tier aside, it kind of reminds me of what they did with Suggs in that he was a good pass rusher coming in that they forced to learn OLB.  He was less good at OLB at first than DE but before too long it was a better outcome.
