Rolando McClain comeback?

390 posts in this topic

Welp.. Looks like they're giving him a chance..

He's been reinstated

Doesn't mean anything yet. They have to reinstate him to cut him. Not sure if they'll do that, but they should in my opinion.

Yup...should be interesting. I do agree they gain nothing by NOT giving him a chance. Just wish he had shown a little more desire, maturity and well, skill!

There's no purpose in cutting him unless they are absolutely sure he won't come back though right?

It's a weird situation.  If McClain was granted reinstatement from the NFL, we were forced to reinstate him from the reserve/retired list.  He'll probably stick around on the roster and be reevaluated when the minicamp begins on Monday.

Yeah, Apart from clearing the roster spot there's no real purpose in cutting him now.  worst for keeping him until first round of cuts is just to see if he can turn it around is he takes up a roster spot for a rookie.

Makes no sense to cut him yet before the draft/UDFA. See what you can in the next few weeks and probably into TC and the preseason.

Been hard on you but good luck, Rolando.

I'm a sucker for a good redemption story. So I hope he makes the most out of his chance. It's most likely the last one he will get.

I'll bet that we find a UDFA linebacker who makes it over him. If he's still here by the draft. Can McClain play special teams? Because he's not going to start.

Do you think he would be in line for a suspension since his last incident happened after he signed with us, but before he retired? I don't think I've ever seen a situation remotely like this, but I could see the commish saying he violated the personal conduct policy.

Maybe not since he "suspended" himself for a year.

he has a better chance of starting than an UDFA, our FO really values experience, if nothing else he will be rotated in with Arthur Brown and Daryl Smith if he makes the roster, as a former first rounder with experience he will get playing time, one year off isnt a death sentence on a career

So 24 hour time frame to do something with Ro. Cut him? Keep him? Trade him?

With the timing, my guess is keep him and he will be at OTA's that just happen to start on Monday. Then it's truly sink or swim time.

Maybe, he was activated so he could go to the UA center and work with the RAVENS trainers ?

*shrugs*   Maybe ?

Harbaugh said training camp is gonna be tougher this year, if he can make it through the conditioning test, then he'll make the 53.

He's going to have to do more than just make it through the conditioning test to make the final 53 IMO. Especially since he quit on his workout/tryout/see what you got time.

They're giving him a chance by reinstating him so he can take part in OTAs. The ball is in his court. Either he wants this chance and is willing to work for it - or, he doesn't.

I think they value actual ability more than failed potential. If McClain isn't 3rd or 4th on the depth chart, it will be up to special teams. It depends on how willing he is to learn it and how hard he's willing to work. I would love to see Rolando turn his career around here but I seriously doubt it.

As I said yesterday, I don't feel Rolando has hammered out all of his personal issues.  For the Ravens' sake I hope it works out for the best, but I'm just not a fan of the McClain experiment.

With the conditioning test being the 1st few days of TC, if he passes that I think he has a good shot to make it. He would have successfully gone through the OTAs and in shape to compete which I feel he will do. But like you said...it's all on him.

No point to cut him yet. Let him train at the facility under the teams guidance, go through OTA'S and judge his commitment, work ethic and overall talent. Worst case we cut him in TC.... Best case he gets in shape, makes the team and achieves his potential. No real way for the team to lose but the upside, no matter how unlikely, is potentially big.

I'd get rid of him just based on how little commitment he's showing and how little he cares. How can you not be in shape to finish a simple workout knowing it might be your last chance? I realize we have nothing to lose by keeping him but at some point you need to do what's right. You're not helping him by keep letting everything he does wrong slide. People act like he might turn into a Pro Bowler based on talent but that ship has sailed years ago, let's not hope for miracles here. Teach the kid a lesson, let him move on with his life and don't reward him with another shot after that pathetic showing of his. The coaches take some time off their busy schedule to see if he has anything to offer and he sort of just shows up to say what's up in the middle of the day and then go on with his business later on like nothing happened. Fully agree with Harbs here, just disappointed with him. Can't say more than that.

I am not sure any of us know what his issues really are, or the cause of them. Hopefully, someone in his corner knows and is providing help in some way. Physical injuries usually require rest, and rehab before returning to physical conditioning. Perhaps his mental issues (injury) is to be handled using a similar course. So, if he's had his rest and some mental rehab, my guess is the mental rehab will continue plus the addition of physical conditioning under team trainers will begin. But the real question is, how does he/they train/re-train the mentally side of him, which is where the injury is/was? Unless he receives and accepts some spiritual guidance as well he may have a very short return.

The fact he was reinstated gives me hope. Perhaps, the Ravens understand the Rolando experiment a lot better than we do. They must know the upside he has and the probability of him realizing his potential. In either case, there is no down side to him working out at the facility under the tutelage of the strength and fitness coaches, and learning the playbook while at camp.

3 months is a long time to whip oneself into playing shape and form, and as long as Roland is committed to it, I don't see it as an improbable occurrence. I wish he makes the final roster by improving, because if he does, we are a vastly better defense.

I won't get my hopes up too high for him. It's great that he finally took the steps to improve himself as a person, and that would give hope that he will also take the steps to improve himself as a player. He certainly talked the talk and said the right things. However, when it came time to show up, he did so late, and didn't even finish the conditioning test. Bad day? Maybe, but given his history, I can't really give him the benefit of the doubt. So we'll see, consider anything he does this year to be a bonus, not a given by any means.

From today's Late For Work: "“There were some reports that McClain … arrived late for his workout at the Under Armour Performance Center. A team source denied that was the case. "

I agree. There's not a lot that could go wrong if we keep him around for a few months.

At $700,000 with nothing guaranteed give him a little longer and keep a watchful eye on him. If he does not get that he is under a microscope and show a full commitment and preparing to start "Playing like a Raven" then just cut ties with him. If we draft C.J. Mosely then that will tell me all I need to know.

That's odd. Why wouldn't they just make a public statement if it's not true? That's the least thing I'd have done in that case if that's me. Harbaugh didn't say anything, he was just disappointed with his performance. McClain posted on twitter he was disappointed with his workout as well.

The important thing is they stand literally nothing to lose by keeping him until training camp.  Just some face on the internet and talk radio.
