Here's the deal. We get Smith on a short contract. Nothing huge but a solid 2-3 year contract. The dude can STILL play and has a lot of gas left. He's a veteran and can teach our young WR corp a lot in a span of 2-3 years. The reason he was not as effective in Carolina is because he was literally there ONLY weapon on offense. So defenses double teamed him a lot and at his age that's rough. However that won't happen in Baltimore. We have a lot more weapons than Carolina and that's saying something. And the thing is we're still going to get a young solid receiver through the draft. I'll take Steve Smith, Torrey Smith, Jacoby Jones, Marlon Brown, and Pitta ANYDAY of the week. And that doesn't even include our upcoming draft pick. Lets lock this man up tomorrow. It will help a lot!

Jerry Rice retired at 42; Barry Sanders retired at 30. What's your point?

oh god, jerry rice man... did you really just say jerry rice, one of the hardest working men in sports ever.. youre reaching man... but whatever we'll see.. dont start crying if they let him go after this year, bc regardless his number hes not going to play 4 or five more years im willing to bet that

It all depends on the shape you are in. Steve smith appears to be in great shape. 31: Welker& Roddy White'''lol I'll take them over a 24 yr old.

Exactly. Historically, have the Ravens targeted young, highly-targeted players? No. They targeted guys that will immediately help the team, regardless of age. You naturally gather youth through the draft.

Steve Smith is a tough receiver. Not afraid to go up for the ball. Doesn't drop passes. And he's PHYSICAL. He's a play maker. And despite his age he has another solid 3 seasons in him. He's the type of receiver/playmaker the Ravens need right now. Even right now he's still better than a whole lot of younger receivers in the league.

Well, if you really feel like bringing Smith in is going to be an epic failure, it is not RavensManiac you need to yell at to wake up, you need to do it to the FO, because it seems like they are aggressively pursing this signing.

Please - you are really bringing up Stokley as a comparison? I really think Smith has something left in the tank and he plays like a Raven. We need a guy who is willing to float across the middle, get blasted in the chops, hold onto the ball and say, thank you sir, may I have another.

He's a bridge to the future and we're a good enough team to warrant having a guy that adds that much needed toughness and experience to this group. He's not going to put up jaw dropping numbers, but he's going to contribute in a significant positive way.... that is, of course, if we land him. Which is apparently something we're very interested in doing.

yo people are coming at me about MY opinion .. i never said hed be a epic fail i said he isnt long term player here is my point

We all agree he's not going to be here for 10 yrs, take it down my friend. I would love to see us draft Wr B. Cooks he's little too and fearless over the middle. What a mentor Smith would be for him.

@stone4, I think 2-3 years is realistic for Smith. There is nothing wrong with that. I believe we are still a Championship quality team. I think the defense will continue to improve with Jimmy Smith continuing to progress, Webb should be 100% next year, Elam being switched to his natural position, and the rest of the new players from last year should improve just by having a year to get to know the system. A replenished offense with a fresh start under Kubiak could be great. Steve Smith would be highly motivated to win a SB because he is a very passionate player and knows his window is closing. If Kubiak can make Schaub look like an elite QB, just think what he could do with Flacco. Smith instantly upgrades our offense in my opinion.

Some of you guys on here keep complaining that Steve Smith won't be a "long term" option. What do you mean by long term. The man is 34 years old. More likely than not he's not going to be in the league for another 5 seasons. Not as a WR. But if we can get 3 years(I know I keep using that #) out of him. I think landing him a deal would be worth it. Lets face it. We don't have any tough receivers. Steve would be a breath of fresh air. And hopefully he'll rub off on others. With an "I don't care how many times you punch me in the mouth. I'm going to punch you more" type of attitude.

Sorry but I just feel like that money could be spent on the defense. Daryl Smith and Chris Clemons maybe even Mack. The drafts most talented position is WR and we're basically doing what we always do sign veteran WR and totally forget about it for the next 2-3 years even though it needs big time playmakers

You draft for the future; you sign for now. Right player, right price. That's how I see it. If you can get a good, young player at fair price, go for it. In the end, you look at a guy like Steve Smith, who is a prototypical Raven, you go after him because he will help immediately through both play and leadership. You don't come across extremely passionate players everyday. That's why so many players are out of the league after a few years.

I'm hoping for a 2 yr 8mill, but its probably going to be more like 3yr/14mill. Steve Smith in the slot could be nasty, I just hope he's willing to be a role player and doesn't turn into a distraction. but he could bring a grit to the offense that was lacking last year.

@Dewy, I agree with your last statement. However, I think we should get Smith AND draft a WR in either the first or second. We should resign Daryl Smith but we don't need Chris Clemons, plus I think Clemons was already picked up if I'm not mistaken. I disagree with the idea that the money would be better spent on our d though. Our offense was ridiculously bad last year. I would love to have Mack, but I think we would have to pay around 10 mil a year for him. That is insane for a Center.

I do not disagree with you. He is not a long term solution. However, he may be able to help next year, maybe even the year after. Anyone know ballpark what he is asking?

How much money do we have to spend right now? My last update on our salary cap was like US$15.5MM

We currently have $17,783,602, according to overthecap, but Aaron Wilson says $15.237 million. Not sure.
