Would you vote Randy Moss or T.O. into the HOF?

36 posts in this topic

I recently watched Cris Carter's football life on NFL network and he talked a lot about mentoring Randy Moss in his early years with the Vikings. He talked about how he was the most talented NFL player he had ever laid eyes on and knew he was going to be bigtime from day 1. He also talked about having long lectures with Moss about the importance of hard work and practice although Randy was quite lazy and never really took it all in.

Moss went on to have one of the most prolific yet chaotic careers as a WR. He has some pretty epic stats even though he only played 13 seasons(although its hard to count the final 2 seasons)-

2nd all time in receiving TDs with 156.

3rd all time in receiving yards with 15,292.

10th all time in receptions with 982.

He won rookie of the year and was a 6 time Pro Bowler. He made a SB appearance with the Patriots and scored a TD although they came up short.

And the crazy thing is if he would have kept his head on straight and not been so selfish and lazy he could have easily surpassed some of Jerry Rice's accolades. Still he is one of the best WRs to ever play the game.

You could also throw Terrell Owens into the mix too...he is right next to Moss and Rice in TDs and yards and has over 1000 catches. So the question is would you vote T.O. or Moss into the HOF knowing all of the headaches, and crazy antics they gave many organizations? Because most HOFers are known for being the complete opposite of Randy Moss and T.O.

I think they will both be able to get in. I don't know about first ballot but they are both HOFers in my book. Sure they had their antics but that doesn't take away from what they did on the field.

Both of them are for-sure HOFers. I'm going to say they get in before Hines Ward or Jerome Bettis - they deserve to.

Yea thats kind where Im at too...they may slip a little due to their bad image...but the stats say they are Ray Lewis-esque first ballot guys.

Some on the voting committee may foolishly hold their antics against them but for what they did on the field, there's no argument against them not being first-ballot HOFers in my opinion. The logjam at WR is only going to get worse from here on out but there really aren't any WRs who truly dominated like Moss and T.O. that aren't already in the hall.

Based purely on numbers I think Moss should be a first ballot HOF. Inconsistencies at qb, the Raiders and look at what he did. He changed the game and the way people looked at the receiver position. You look at the history books and Moss will be there twice for tds in a season. Imagine if he had a Joe Montana throwing to him his whole career? TO should get in as well, but not before Moss I think.

The man has a phrase named after him. Corners die a little inside whenever they're Mossed... or is it Moss' d. Whatever....

Both are worthy in my book, although I still think Moss had one of the all time disappointing careers in the NFL.  If he had better work ethic, he'd be the unquestionable GOAT.  He was a HoFer from pure, unmatched natural ability.  And TO, for all his antics, was an exceptional receiver.

Both, Moss' talent was unmatched. Its a shame he wasn't motivated his whole career because he could have been the greatest.

T.O. was a guy that completely willed himself to be one of the greatest, and is exactly the kind of player that belongs in Canton. I don't care about his personality, he deserves Canton.

Moss without a doubt. Best deep threat in possibly forever.1st ballot.

TO statswise deserving but I'm afraid his antics will keep him out of the HOF for awhile. Borderline.

As is the general consensus of this thread, yes. The Pro Football Hall of Fame is an assessment of playing performance, and, in that regard, these two were some of the best ever. Their attitudes screwed them each over quite a bit, but for most of their careers they were elite.

Obviously, each one got shipped around a lot becomes teams grew tired of their acts. This takes away from their greatness some, but not enough to keep them out of the Hall. They each played for five NFL teams.

That was pretty much how I got to know who Randy was...in high school as a kid whenever we would play football and make a 1 handed catch whoever was defending got Moss'ed!!! He was always a fun receiver to watch.

Funny story: I remember in high school I always used to hangout with a few Pats fans...and they would talk about Randy Moss and I really didn't know much about him. I knew he was good in Minnesota but at the time he was coming off a couple bad seasons in Oakland before just signing with New England.

I of course was a Ravens fan and used to plead how much of a tank Mark Clayton was...and that he was WAY better than Randy Moss. This was the preseason before Randy Moss scored 23 TDs with the Patriots. DAMN I was wrong hahahahaa and thats when I started taking football more seriously, and REALLY wanted Ozzie to trade everything for Randy Moss hahaha.

They're both getting in.  One or both may have to wait a year or two because of the antics, but they're both in, and should both be first ballot locks IMO.  On the field, like you said, second and third all time in many of the receiving categories.  Judge what they did between the whistles, not who they were when the play was over (and in reality, neither of them were really, really bad guys off the field, like some out there).

CC is such a tool. Total jerk. Not that moss wasn't. But regardless I'd vote for Moss. He has the impressive stats even though he could've done better. I'd vote TO as well.

Nah Cris was a knucklehead in his early years just like Moss and T.O. but I thought it was cool to see him in his more mature years where he was a extremely hard working and dedicated veteran showing Randy Moss the ropes and teaching and mentoring him and all of that. The fact that a great receiver like CC who played with many great HOFers claimed Moss was the most talented player he had ever seen was pretty great. I got a lot of respect for CC...although there are sometimes on ESPN where I wouldn't mind strangling him haha

Moss is the most talented player in NFL History. No question hall of famer. Owens is as well, why is this even brought up. I thought this was a forgone conclusion

Im pretty sure Jerry Rice was voted the #1 player on NFL's top 100 players of all time list. So then the question is who is better Randy or Jerry.

Me I like Jerry better, he was extremely refined at every aspect of his game. There were really no weaknesses with him, he was the cleanest route runner, an athlete with deceptive speed who made some of the longest TD grabs in history, the best hands ever- (he never even used his hands to catch he used his finger tips). And there was never really anyway to stop him besides a good pass rush eliminating pass plays. He was the hardest worker too which pretty much any player has over Moss. And I seriously think he is a WR who makes the QB...I really dont know if Montana and Young would be the QBs they were without Rice. He was a huge help in SF winning as many SBs as they did too and won at least 1 SB MVP if I remember correctly.

Randy Moss should have taken Cris Carter's advice strongly to heart and became all about hard work but instead he continued to do whatever he wanted, developed a selfish and lazy attitude and yet STILL dominated on the field. If he would have settled down and matured into a working class style of player like Rice was Moss no question could have been the goat.

I think Calvin Johnson is next in line to take the GOAT title and could surpass a lot of Jerry Rice's stats and have that same type of dominance if Detroit ever makes it any where in the post season. But other than that Jerry Rice will remain the goat.

I think he was trying to say that no one was more talented than Moss. Rice was a better player throughout his career but Moss had the potential to be that GOAT. He disappointed in that sense but it doesn't mean he wasn't talented.

Randy Moss was extremely talented and he may have had a higher ceiling than Jerry Rice or at least a similar potential. However the problem was that  Moss never fully developed and honed his potential like Rice did, in their prime's Rice was the more talented player.

Can you imagine if Randy Moss would have never been the headcase he was and was still catching balls from Tom Brady? Mannnn they would have won a lot of games and by now Moss would have been on top of a lot of the stat columns.

Yeah thats what he is saying. He isn't saying Rice wasn't better, he is saying that Moss had the most upside of anyone.
