Free Agents To Consider: Defense

I wish he could stay, but I'm happy for Art. If there's one guy that deserves a contract like this, it's him. He's put in the work and earned it. One of the classiest guys off the field as well.

Agree with you 100%. I'm also happy he has the opportunity to go to a competitive team with familiar faces.

Dolphins signed Louis Delmas, so their interest in Jairus Byrd was just like their interest in Monroe: not real, or they like signing lesser rate talents. Byrd has apparently dropped his asking price to $8 million per season. I wonder if Ozzie is considering him because he is most definitely the playmaker free safety that the Ravens would be looking for.

In other news, the Ravens have an offer on the table for Daryl Smith, but the sides remain far apart. Thanks D'qwell Jackson.

Money isn't the only risk.  8 mil per year is A LOT for a free safety.  How many times do we see the biggest names on the market sign huge deals only to fall off with their new team.  Happens all the time.  Signing him to a big name contract is extremely risky.

Browns sign MLB Karlos Dansby to a 4year deal worth $24M. PERFECT for us...Daryl Smith won't be more than $4 or $5M per year which is pretty doable.

It's a shame he's in the AFC North because he's damn good. The Browns are a competent quarterback away from competing with that defense

Free agency is always a huge risk, which is why I think Ozzie is so shrewd and careful with his money. It's hard to watch film on every single free agent and know everything about them, but it seems Ozzie does more homework than anyone else

What does one have to do with the other? They didn't have any receivers or linebackers, of course they had to overpay to get somebody. Has nothing to do with Clemons and their safety position. They already have a Pro Bowl type safety who they had trouble re-signing with and who they gave a huge contract to. Whatever, let's move on from this.

Oh, they had to? Not like Daryl Smith signed for way cheaper or Karlos Dansby. Not like Boldin was being traded or Welker was signed for $6 million. I mean, they HAD to overpay? The Ravens were down three linebackers (depends on how you view McClain since his future was in the air), but they didn't overpay for Ellerbe. They patiently waited and got a huge steal on Smith. They were down both starting safeties, but they re-signed James Ihedigbo for the vet minimum and then got Elam in the draft.

I'm just saying the Dolphins are hardly a model of a great front office. I'm actually very happy they didn't re-sign Clemons because I think the Ravens should go after him. Not a huge play maker, but very very solid in coverage

D'qwell Jackson was really good too, Id say Dansby is a slight improvement on him. But they won't gain anything unless they get another good ILB to play next to him...to me thats why Jackson struggled so much last year.

Who was it, Craig Roberts or something? I can't really argue there.

I'm surprised the Browns are going after Whitner, not Ward

Craig Robertson.  He was absolutely terrible.  I would have been a better option.

Hope he learned from last year's free agency where he picked up free agent bust Michael Huff and Marcus Spears.

But history tells us that Ozzie will again look for veterans who were released and motivated to win (cough, Steve Smith, cough).

Smith could be another Michael Huff or the Boldin we were missing.

Something tells me Steve Smith would be a very welcome addition. I'd still be all for drafting a first round receiver

Don't forget they already had dansby in house before they made all those moves. They are just clueless.

I wouldn't say that at all. Dansby is good yes. But whitener is a step backwards from ward.

Hmm. Then there's canty and smith. Steve smith is a much better player than boldin has ever been.

I was confused why they didn't push harder for Ward. He's very good

Pro Bowler Thomas DeCoud now available. He may have had a terrible year last year but theres always a chance he could get back to his old form. Great locker room guy from what i've heard. just throwing out another safety in what is a thin market.

Wow...I'm surprised the Saints had cap room for Byrd.

They've been cutting players since the season ended.  Smith, Vilma, Harper, and Greer saved them almost 20 million in 2014, and Moore and Sproles almost another 6 million.

If the Saints could fit Byrd under their cap when they were said to have one of the worst cap situations in the league, I feel a lot better about our chances of getting a guy like Mack.

I'm very surprised Verner went for as cheap as he did with Sam Shields signing for so much. So, I'm now hoping Jimmy signs for a Verner contract

What about Ryan Clark? Couldn't we sign him as a veteran and then get a safety in the draft?

Get on out of here now, ya hear

Retiring is probably what he's thinking.  He said so last year - he seems to have changed his tune recently, but it wouldn't shock me (I think he sits on the market for a while) that if he goes a few weeks without catching on to another team, he hangs it up.

Actually, while Unlikely if I were Ozzie I'd probably be interested in Ware..

He won't come here, but I think it would be interesting to say the least
