Free Agents To Consider: Defense

You don't pay a guy as much as you'd pay him for him not to be a full time player.

Everyone has to rotate more this year to avoid wearing down including Suggs and Dumervil. He wouldn't be a part-time player.

Why would we invest that much money into a position that we have covered both as starters and depth?  That makes absolutely no sense.

Bennett's best fit is as a 4-3 DE.  He doesn't translate well to our defense.  Stop going by the name recognition and look at how he actually fits the team.  He doesn't.

Who are you Dean Pees? If the 49ers think he fits 3-4, then he obviously can, so that makes you wrong. You didn't even know he plays rush DT.

Stevie Brown could be helpful at safety. Did a good job on the Giants last year and has decent ball skill. Dont think he would command a large contract either. Think he could do just as good a job as Clemons at a lower price.

Stevie Brown is a very poor man's Jairus Byrd. He makes a lot of big plays, but his coverage isn't nearly as solid as Clemmons'

Dude, don't question rmw because I promise he knows far more than you

Lol okay.  Whatever you say.  I know he plays DT, but that's in nickel situations, which would be only a part time gig.  He's a 4-3 player, plain and simple.  Just because the 49ers want to try to make a player fit a scheme that he doesn't fit doesn't make him a 3-4 player.

Am I about to get ranted on? I think I'm making fairly logical, non-heated points.

Maybe I'm asking for a little creativity in player use, but its not a huge stretch, and another team is considering it too. Not as crazy as moving Brandon Browner to Safety if you know what I mean.

You can ask for creativity, but you don't invest tons of money into a player that's similar to 2 premier guys that we already have in Suggs and Dumervil.  Just because the 49ers are for some odd reason considering it doesn't mean we should.  Our money should go to needs, not luxuries.

Not ranted on, but you are suggesting that we pick up a 3rd high dollar pass rusher when we have so many other positions that need to be filled. Another DT would be a luxury, even if he did fit our defense.

I'd like to make a move for Red Bryant. Think he could be useful on our d line. Not sure how much money he'd want. I feel he could be kinda like how Cory Redding was for us.

champ says he doesent mind playing safety.

could be a good veteran stop gap at FS for 1 or 2 years.

unlesss he wants a big pay day.

wonder how much he has left.

Get him in on a cheap one year deal to play safety like we did Daryl Smith last year. If he does a Daryl Smith and plays out of his mind, then we can think about what to do next year. Otherwise he isn't worth the risk...

I think the 49ers rumor is just that. I think we could use a player like Bennett for sure. However with the kind of pay day he will get he would not be maximized here.

Remember the last time we signed an aging future HoF CB and moved him to safety? His name was Rod Woodson and he was crucial to our amazing defense and Super Bowl run.

Champ is around the same age Woodson was and don't forget that Woodson led the league in interceptions during his final year at 37 years old.

All I'm saying, is give Champ Bailey a chance. Would make a great free safety and shouldn't be very expensive.

I think Rod is better than champ . Champ has declined big time in the past couple of years. NO thanks. Maybe as a backup

I wonder what kind of market Mike Mitchell would be looking at - he had a very good year in Carolina but I heard they might have trouble resigning any of their free agents because of cap issues.

Champ was actually really good in 2012, outside of the one playoff game. He may not possess the same speed, but he is a really quality player. I wouldn't be opposed to him playing safety

Sam Shields just signed for almost $10 million per season. If Jimmy has another season like he just did, he won't be cheap at all based off of that

well the ravens are already said they gonna pick up his 5 option so its 2 more years for jimmy at low cost but the salary cap is going up so.

Trust me, I know about that dove year option because it makes things easier with Torrey. Won't have two young players with due contracts, thankfully.

Still, you have to figure the Ravens will try to negotiate with Jimmy next year

yeah but with the cap maybe going up the ravens might have close to 40 million next year maybe even more.

Not that I don't believe Champ could come in a be a solid FS here. But he and Ed Reed are the same age .. So all things considered, I don't see us bringing in Champ to attempt to play FS, When we let the all time great leave.

It's already around $40 million with no moves made (not sure where it stands with the Pitta contract), but that was also before the salary cap raise. We could have over $50 million before any moves are made

Didn't mean to neg you, but I'm on mobile.

The difference is that Champ showed in 2012 that he was still playing at an extremely high level. Ed was showing significant signs of not being able to tackle and he was being tested more in coverage and allowing a way higher completion percentage than in years past.

With Champ, you'd have to decide was his injury to blame for a down season or did he abruptly fall off hard because of age?
