Free Agents To Consider: Defense

Graham played well and deserves his contract, not bad for a guy buried as a ST player.

With that said there are still a lot of corners available, a few would be upgrades over Graham.

So Chris Clemons is the best safety available. Anyone heard any news of Oz trying to sign him?

Not a peep.  The Steelers, Eagles, and Redskins have shown interest, though.

Darn. Elam is better suited for SS and I don't feel comfortable with two young safeties being on the field at the same time. That can lead to costly mistakes.

Seems like that's probably the plan at this point.  All FA focuses, except for Daryl Smith, seem to be going to the offensive side of the ball.  I can't blame them, but one position I really want them to hit on defense is FS.  They all went off the market really quickly though.  Clemons seems like the most logical choice, but he doesn't fit the rangy playmaker that Ozzie described at season's end.

Chris Clemons is a DE not a safety lol

There's a safety and a DE both named Chris Clemons.

Too bad. In a WR class as stacked as this years, we'll miss out on a lot of difference makers. Lets get more Alabama guys I guess. -_-

I agree with you there, but we should definitely take a guy high up in the draft unless we think Omar Brown is a capable backup but I'm not sold. Someone in the 3rd or 4th would be nice.

problem there is.. i just dont see anyone in the draft i like at safety. maybe its just me personally but me, being a bama fan, oddly, would HATE to see us get clinton dix in the first, i consider him a mid 2nd rounder and more of a SS than a FS, and calvin pryor just doesnt stand out much more, 25-30 pick in my eyes. just not impressed at all by this safety class, and i dont see any better "value" picks in rounds 2 or 3 either

Very shocked and disappointed to find out that the Ravens didn't even offer any type of deal to Art Jones. He stated he wanted to remain a Ravens but they never offered any type of contract.

Because they needed to sign Monroe first and we have other pressing needs. He knows that and respects that and he wanted to be paid for his production. Even if Baltimore offered him a deal it would of been a slap in the face compared to the deal he got from Indy.

Captain Munnerlyn isn't a bad CB he is a physical player? I wonder how much cap he would command?

Is Munnerlyn physical? I haven't watched enough to know but he didn't seem that way to me. Seemed to me like he relies more on ball skills than physicality. Pretty small guy too I think.

He makes a lot of huge plays that can swing a game, but from what I've seen he also can get exposed when trying to make a play. I see him as a nickel guy in the slot.

I think he's too similar to Webb. Good player with talent but a bit redundant in my opinion. I'd like to see us get a bigger corner who thrives on the outside.

Potential scenario I could see playing out - eagles make a play for Revis and if they land him they cut Cary Williams. In that hypothetical would anyone be interested in bringing him back for the right price?

Didn't think wed miss him but hate to say that we did. And with the emergence of jimmy would be a great 3rd cb who could let Webb slide into the slot in Nickel and sub packages.

Looking to me like were goin to try and address center, wr, and mlb in free agency in that order and then hit FS in the draft.

I'm seeing a trade back into the early to mid 20's and grabbing Pryor or Clinton-Dix and then taking a wr in the 2nd.

Daryl Smith and a center (either Mack or de la puente) are the 2 most important pieces right now. That would give us the flexibility to do whatever in the draft after hitting on FS in the 1st.

I'm feeling like us getting Steve smith is a foregone conclusion. I think he wants to be here and since he's due $3mill from Carolina he'll be cheap.

If we can't land Daryl and a center I'm going to be really worried headed into the season.

Rolando McClain and Omar brown are 2 players that are intriguing wild cards right now that I think have the potential to take positions I'm perceiving as a weakness right now and give us the freedom to spend and vastly upgrade the offense. Can't rely on it though.

His vertebrae is fused and he's clear, we might as well bring him in and kick the tires.

What about Captain Munnerlyn? his value is slowly dropping. We don't just need a FS we need 3 corners who can ball.

I'm all for Munnerlyn if he comes on a decent deal. His market has been quiet.

That is a bit of a shame. I understand where you're coming from, but as another already stated, they perhaps knew they couldn't afford him and just gave up. I think we feel very comfortable with our depth on the DL. I think that's why we let him go. I'll miss Jones a ton. I loved that guy from day 1.

Kerry Rhodes needs to come out of his cave and play some FS for us....

I don't know what's up there but I don't think we want him or else I imagine we would have signed him last season when he was a free agent the entire year.

He's one possibility, size isn't really the knock on him because he's physical but he'll get burned on the outside.

Anyone have any intrest in Brandon Spikes?

Yes, he's a beast run defender. He seems like a cool guy too and a good leader.

I like him in the slot actually. I think he would be fine there. Keep Webb outside.

Personally, I'd love for us to sign Clemons. I know it's not a great solution but a one year deal would be good for us and him. I also wouldn't mind signing Cook if he gets past the Niners.

Cook could be an interesting #2 on the outside but he's missed 30 games in 4 years.

I want to see us take a run at Henry Melton or B J Raji. Both are great DL guys and since losing Jones we need some fresh blood there.

I get were you both are coming from, but at least put an offer on the table to see if he'll take a hometown discount. What harm could that have done? I would have cut Cody in a NYC minute to free up space to keep him if that would have helped.

Well, Cody is also a free agent so that's not an option. Hey, I agree, we should have put something but maybe they didn't want to insult the guy will a lowball? You know? I know you won't agree because I'm trying to talk myself into it (lol) but that's my best guess.

Melton is coming off a rebuilt knee, BJ Raji was a bust in Green Bay.
