Free Agents To Consider: Offense

1,190 posts in this topic

He has good hands converts 3rd downs, and plays in the slot. He is  EXACTLY what Ozzie is looking for. My only concern with him and why I personally doubt we will sign him id the price.

per rotoworld

The Baltimore Sun reports the Ravens are interested in free agent Julian Edelman, but that "nothing has heated up yet."

The Ravens have already been linked to Steve Smith, and are apparently going to do their due diligence on every available wideout. Edelman would be a major upgrade on what the Ravens had in the slot last season, but it's anyone's guess as to how effective he'd be outside of the Patriots' system. He also has a lengthy injury history. We doubt GM Ozzie Newsome would overpay.

Edelman is a product of their system and we don't run what they run. That'd be a bad signing.

He thrived in that system with one of the greatest. Doesn't mean he can't do good in another. I'd prefer to stay clear of him though.

We don't have a well rounded TE as it is, so adding Daniels would not change that.  Are you saying you would rather see us pass on Daniels and grab someone else (FA or draft) who is well rounded?

he was saying dont add daniels in that reply. and i agree, he and I are both saying add a well rounded te who can block and can contribute when needed in the passing game

Exactly why I said I doubt we sign him...too much money for a B grade WR.

Did you even watch him play? He did profit off having a QB like Brady but the guy is one of the toughest receivers in the league, he makes the toughest catches, he's a guy you can count on, he catches virtually everything thrown his way. Plus he's one of the elite return men in the game, maybe even the best. To make it sound like anybody could have done what he did last season because of Brady is silly. The guy worked for his 100+ catches and his 1000+ yards. I'd love to have him here. Jacoby would never even be able to sniff close to 100 catches in NE with the same "supporting cast" (they all pretty much suck except for Brady).

@RapSheet: If #Panthers WR Steve Smith is released, as expected after trying to trade him, don’t be surprised if the #Ravens emerge as his landing spot

But how does he convert those third downs?  Things are not so simple.  Coaches get paid a lot of money for a reason.

Agreed. Would much rather go after Golden Tate.

He gets open and the QB throws him the ball...he is covered by LBs and safeties in the slot just like he would anywhere else. I understand Bill Bellichek runs a great complex system there and he benefits from having a great QB, but Edelman is the one getting open and most importantly making the grabs.

I still consider Edelman  a B grade WR and believe he will get more $ some where besides Baltimore.

The Ravens are linked to EVERYONE... will be very interesting to see what Ozzie and Co. do.

It is interesting this year.  Usually those types of things are kept under raps, but there have been a lot of reports that we're interesting in a lot of players.  Not typical for a Baltimore offseason.

Monroe, Steve Smith, Owen Daniels... yep, I'm on board so far! Man - Pitta and Owen Daniels would be sweet

-Juilian Edelman had 1,430 all purpose yards and 4 TDs in 2013

-Jacoby Jones had 1,584 all purpose yards and 3 TDs in 2013 (in only 12 games)

I wouldn't underestimate Jacoby Jones value simply because he didn't have Tom Brady throwing him the ball

I agree with the eval of Edelman, although I wouldn't overpay for him. If you watched the Pats play last year, Edelman gave Tom Brady the luxury of being able to lock on him and trust he will get open right away. As Brady gets older he does not hold the ball to go t/ progressions because he wants nothing to do with getting hit. Edelman and Vereen were his quick pass favorite targets with no Gronk that were able to consistently get open and make tough catches. Bundchen missed Edelman several times in the AFC conference game including when he was WIDE open for what would have been a long TD in the 1st half when the game was close.

Steve Smith would be a very interesting move - he's a fantastic veteran presence and I doubt he'll have many suitors on the market because of his age.  I think, in a reduced role, he could have a huge impact on this team.

I would rather have a young TE next to Pitta! O. Daniels is 31!  I hope we draft someone and the player gets enough playtime to develop!

any chance ravens go after the Jets right tackle Austin Howard (just hit the open market) or is he too much money?/trying to fill that position in house?

And so was Mike Williams of the Tampa Bay Bucs.

Bad example - Mike Williams was a first round talent that fell because of character concerns.  Similar falls have happened to players like Marvin Jones.

Draft ASJ or the ND TE

Watching NFL Network, says Steve Smith won't be released today. We'll have to wait and see.

The key word is today. It's very likely that he gets released soon, but they're still trying hard to trade him. Not likely to happen

I think Alex Mack is overrated.

How come Trent Richardson had a dismal year behind such a promising O-line.

Trent's rookie year showed much promise, but this year everything fell apart.

Because Richardson is one of the most overrated players in quite some time. Had no business being a first round pick. He's an average talent at best.
