Free Agents To Consider: Offense

1,190 posts in this topic

He caught 100+ balls for over 1000 yards last season in 16 games. Made a ton of tough catches in traffic over the middle. Wouldn't call him "glass".

Thats his only healthy season and he barely made 1000 yards with 100 balls thrown by a future HOFer. Thats 10 yards per catch which may be the lowest ever for 100+ balls.

I like his hands though.

I don't want Steve Smith. This year's draft has a very deep WR class and we're about to pass on some great young talent in favor of a 34 year old.

I'm sure Ozzie knows Smith isn't a long term option. We'd still desperately need another receiver and in this deep draft I don't believe he'd neglect that with that signing. It would allow us to focus on other positions such as FS & OL which are both just as important and tougher to find.

I expect us to go both routes free agency and draft. If we go with someone like Smith, Nicks, or Edelman in free agency we can invest in a WR in rounds 3-5. If we choose to go younger and pickups a WR early in the draft we could grab a cheaper WR such as , Lance Moore,Nate Burleson. or Jason Avant.

I would like to have Edelman but please don't overpay him

Agreed.  Personally I am not a huge fan of him.  The only reason I would want him is because of Kubiak.  Any of our previous offensive coordinators would have no idea how to utilize him along with the rest of the players we already have.  Luckily, we have Kubiak.

Veteran receivers and late round draft picks, that's all we've been doing in the past. Where did that get us last season?

Rookie receivers rarely ever make a seamless transition and immediate impact in the pros, AJ Green is the only one that comes to mind in recent years. So signing someone like Smith would be in an effort to win NOW, not in a few years.

Tandon Doss was a 4th round draft pick.

Ravens aren't offering a restricted tender to Tandon Doss, would be interested in possibly re-signing him, according to a source

Late round prospects might not work out now or ever. Streeter, Reed, Doss. We had so many WRs ready to "step up" when Boldin got traded and what happened? Will we get Smith and draft someone in the first 3 rounds? I doubt it with our draft MO in the past.

Im pretty sure we won a Super Bowl under that mantra...remember Torrey Smith was the highest draft pick we have invested on a WR in FOREVER and he was the 58th overall selection. We could notch a nice WR in this years draft between rounds 2-5.

Well besides last season think back to Mason & Boldin. Although Q came from a trade both contributed a great amount and are regarded as the 2 best WR's in franchise history. Made the playoffs consistently and both at one time were Joe's favorite targets. Had them both in 2010 when Joe had his best year statistically.

Besides last year in which our veteran WR signing was Stokely, we've had recent success doing so. Point I'm trying to make is a vet coming in could be good for us. Who's to say Ozzie doesn't draft another WR round 2?

Well Keenan Allen broke Aj Greenes record last year, and Robert Woods almost had 1000 yards too. If you invest in the right...NFL ready WR they could have success early. I could see a lot of WRs from the draft  make an impact this year.

No surprise:

Ravens will evaluate Owen Daniels, according to source, could be a good fit potentially. Unclear if it will develop, just hitting the market

I would be all for this.  We would have to get Daniels on the cheap, especially after Pitta's deal.  But Daniels might want to be under Kubiak and Flacco - he could really thrive.  We could have the best TE tandem in the league.

But then we'd have 2 pass catching TEs and not 1 rounded TE

FA's on offense? alex mack IF hes cheap enough, depth signings, and thats it. unless some amazing fit at WR gets cut and we dont lose a comp over signing him, then dont sign him. be patient, wait til summer to start signing everyone, and address WR and TE in the draft, try your hardest to re-sign our current FA's for as much of a bargain as possible and keep the continuity.

i upvoted you to balance out that neg, youre right. moneys so much better spent elsewhere than owen daniels. hes a carbon copy of pitta but without the chemistry with the qb. what we need is one of the massive oaf's from the 2nd or 3rd round, the type of guy we can line up, hand in the dirt, every snap, is he blocking? is he running out? what the hell are we gonna do to cover a 6'6" guy who can jump through the roof? you need 2 types of TE's to run a 2TE offense, especially a ZBS stretch heavy scheme

Edelman is a product of their system and we don't run what they run.  That'd be a bad signing.

Would love Steve smith

P.s. i think the micro management of merging threads from mods can be alittle too much at times. Some topics deserve threads by themselves not me searching thru 40 pages to see if its being discussed.

He has good hands converts 3rd downs, and plays in the slot. He is  EXACTLY what Ozzie is looking for. My only concern with him and why I personally doubt we will sign him id the price.

We don't have a well rounded TE as it is, so adding Daniels would not change that.  Are you saying you would rather see us pass on Daniels and grab someone else (FA or draft) who is well rounded?

Steve Smith and Owen Daniels would be a great haul... add Monroe and possibly Kyle Cook as well and we are all set come draft time.

agreed. he is strictly a timing based offensive role player, and we never have, and never will be a small ball timing paced offense as long as joe is our qb, we will be a balanced, run to open the pass/vice versa big play offense. not a fit.
