Free Agents To Consider: Offense

1,190 posts in this topic

Ouch.

Looks like we are going for the scrubs of free agency.

Ravens never take the pro bowler in his prime unless he falls into our laps ie dumervil

Time for a bunch of average players ie montgomery

In other words, the Ravens FO is incredibly intelligent. Its all about finding bargains.

Actually we have about 12 million in cap space left. Plenty of wiggle room.

When I posted those numbers, I had already subtracted out the 2-3 million that we would have to save to pay our Draft Picks with. Which leaves us with 8.5 - 9 million, roughly.

Yeah, nice cheap stop gap.

It could work out beautifully toward the plan I have for Mack. Let Browns pay him $10M this year (they are more than likely to match anything we put on the table today), then sign him on 4 years in 2015. I hope Ozzie is talking to Alex Mack on those lines.

Hope a deal gets done with Steve Smith today. One of my favorite players and brings an attitude we need on offense. We haven't had that big scrappy guy since Boldin left and I think hurt us big time last year. Smith can play outside and inside for us while providing veteran leadership on/off the field. All around good guy and I think he has completely turned his life around since he got in fights when he was younger. If you don't believe me watch the E60 segment on him and you can see why in his most recent incident where he got in a fight, what provoked him.

Bringing Steve Smith to Baltimore would be amazing. He arguably would draw just as much coverage from defenses as Torrey would, and then you have Pitta working the middle, and young guys like Marlon Brown and (hopefully) a 1st round draft pick coming up in the ranks. The great thing about Smith is he can do it all. Play on the outside and the slot, which he actually prefers but wasn't asked to do a lot of it in Carolina.

Doubting anything happens with Steve Smith today. With him saying things like hes looking forward to kicking back, relaxing and enjoying some coffee... and also looking forward to a few free dinners - tells me he's in no rush to sign and wants to enjoy his first experience being courted by other teams.

He may make up his mind today, but doubt he'd sign. Strikes me as a guy who likes the attention he's getting from the media, fans on twitter, and from teams. Plus he most likely does want to truly visit each interested team to check out the environment, hear their offer and make the best decision for his career and life after football.

Don't hold your breath, but then again who knows.

The #Ravens are running the four-corners offense, trying to keep Steve Smith in town and away from other teams. Still in Baltimore.

I know a lot of people will hate me for saying this, but I think it'd be really cool if we put Leron McClain and Willis McGahee back in Ravens Uniforms. They will both be relatively cheap backs and I think we need some depth at that position. I think McGahee still has a lot left in the tank. I've never been sold on Ray Rice. I think Bernard Pierce is really solid. I'm excited to see a revamped line to help our run game. It still needs improvement though and I think we should get Mack or some other free agent lineman instead of Steve Smith.

Because of where the Ravens currently stand with their salary cap, signing Alex Mack is 99.9% unlikely, unfortunately. However, Will Montgomery is a fine consolation prize (and a much more Ozzie Newsome-like acquisition).

I'm currently liking this idea of a Monroe - * LG? * - Montgomery Yanda - *RT? * line, even if it includes pushing Kelechi Osemele back to right tackle (to protect his back). I wonder who would be the left guard at that point, then? I guess it could be a player on the team, already (Gradkowski? Jensen? Wagner?); but, more likely, the Ravens could solidify the position in the early parts of the draft. Signing a LG might be a little unnecessary, to be honest, with who's still available as a free agent.

trust me you dont want montgomery

McGahee? I'm sorry; but, Willis is done. He's going to turn 33 during October and no team wanted his services UNTIL the Browns traded-away Trent Richardson and needed a veteran RB. Even then, he did next to nothing.

As for Le'Ron McClain: Well, I won't rule anything against it. However, he hasn't been asked to carry the football since his breakout year in '08. While he's a solid blocker, this team might as well bring back Vonta Leach if they want that.

Speaking of which: How likely is it for the Ravens to end-up with Leach, once again? He hasn't appeared on any team's radar and since the fullback is a dying position, what are the chances Baltimore scoops him up after free agency settles down (like in May)? Plus, Kubiak used him effectively in Houston and Juice is someone I see carrying the football between the tackles, rather than paving the way for the halfback.

I had no actual belief that this would happen. I was reminiscing and would really like to see Willis retire as a Raven. He was definitely my favorite player. I see the Ravens drafting a running back or adding someone with experience. I'm excited to see how Juice does. With a nickname like that......everyone is gonna love him if he does good and provides some offense.

Might take some of the unfair heat off Oher. ;-)

Imagine if we signed him and resigned Oher...we'd never get a play off...

Unfair?  Has Oher ever picked up the right blocking assignment?  That's more of a problem than his drive killing penalties.

Again. We don't need Steve Smith. End of story. We are fine as is with Smith,Brown, Jones and Pitta.

We need a Center and RT waaaay more than an aging, declining receiver.

EDS signed for 4 years, $14.25M.  Give BDLP the same contract, get Steve Smith, and let's call it a day.

I'm not so sure...

By late first rounder in a weak draft you are thinking someone like say...Clayton? Travis Taylor?

I say make every effort to get Evans. It might mean moving up a few spots. Because otherwize in the 2nd you are looking at guys like Jordan Matthews, Davante Adams, Allen Robinson, Donte Moncrief

I would take Lee in the first round, too.

I would be fine going into the season with a healthy Osemele at RT, Yanda at RG, De La Puente at C, (pick one) Gino/AQ/Wagner at LG, and Monroe at LT.

I get that he is old, but I truly believe Steve Smith has a big year in the way we need him (Example: mentoring Torrey and Marlon, clutch 3rd down catches, leadership, a few td's, decent yardage). Remember last year he was the Panthers number 1 wr so he drew the opposing teams best week in and week out and at 34 still put up pretty good numbers considering. Also consider the Panthers were so sorry at WR he couldn't play slot which is his best position as much as he should have. They needed him outside. Add in the fact that his balls are arguably as big as Justin Tucker's, he always shows up in big games even hurt, plays with a huge chip on his shoulder that will only be bigger this year, and is probably one of the toughest players in the game and I don't get why more people aren't more excited about him coming. Me personally I will be extremely thrilled when this is done and believe it should be priority number 1 like Oz is treating it

It'll be the best available......... Lee, Ebron or maybe even Martin.  Unless we trade up, ha ha will probably be gone, as will Evans.
