Steve Smith is about to be 35 years old. I don't get it, he probably only has 1-2 years left in him.

I doubt Smith would be our only new WR.  I assume they'd get Smith, and let a high draft pick rookie work his way in.  It gives the rookie a chance to learn and takes some of the pressure off for immediate contribution.

The ravens made a mistake last year of getting rid of Boldin thinking he didn't warrant the money he was asking for and you seen what he did in SF, so why can't Smith do the same for us.

Completely different situation - go look at who else Kaepernick was throwing to - it was just Boldin and Davis.  As soon as Crabtree came back, Boldin's numbers dipped - even in 2012 Joe spread the ball out to a lot more receivers than Kaepernick did in 2013.  Smith is not going to put up Boldin like numbers because he's not going to be thrown to 150 times like Boldin was last year.  Boldin is worth it to the 49ers because Kaepernick targets him so much - or let me put it another way - 4 players from the niners last year had 30+ passes thrown their way - Crabtree, Davis, Boldin, and Bruce Miller.  Including Pitta, Joe threw at least 30 passes to 8 players - Pitta, Smith, Brown, Jones, Rice, Doss, Dickson, and Clark.

I would like Steve Smith. He brings everything you want and is still productive at this point of his career. He would also be a good mentor for Torrey.

Well with a new OC in Kubiak I doubt that would happen anyway. His philosophy doesn't include throwing the ball much.

From our TE, we definitely need a guy who can throw some blocks....Pettigrew also gives us a reliable pass catcher so that we can run 2 TE sets when desired. Would love to get him

No, I watched a game last season where Pettigrew dropped 3 passes in a row and 5 in the whole game. He is not sure handed

Yeah, I think my point would be, if healthy, Steve Smith is still probably capable of putting up 1000 yards in the right offense.  With the Ravens, he won't because A) we run the ball a lot more than other teams, and B. we spread the ball out to a lot more receivers than a lot of teams.  So he might be worth X amount of money to one team, but he would be worth less to us because we wouldn't use him as much.  I'd like to have him, but it all depends on the kind of money he's looking for and what his expectations are for his role here.

I would love Smith for us. Hopefully he will be cheaper than the 6 mil Boldin wanted and still be an effective, crafty veteran who could help some of the others. Plus the guy can straight up play and I have liked Smith as a WR for a while now. He absolutely abused Talib last year and that would be fun to have if we face Denver in the playoffs again lol

And that's what we'll give him. If he is available in a week when his #s go down. until then, someone else can snatch him if they are willing to guve him more $

keep in mind that he may be willing to take less money because he is guaranteed $3 million from the panthers.  he is going to want to go somewhere to win a championship and play for a team that has that same kind of bruising mentality he does.

My goodness if we sign Smith....

WR 1 Torrey Smith

WR 2 Steve Smith

TE Dennis Pitta

Slot Marlon Brown

Plus Rice and Pierce in the backfield... in Kubiak's system? Talk about fixing our offensive woes from last year.

And maybe a Eric Ebron or a Jace Amaro in the draft to work in tandem with Pitta? Could be pretty dangerous.

Dont get me wrong, I actually wouldn't mind us bringing Steve Smith into our system. He's a tough SOB, reminds me of Boldin. What threw me off is his age and numbers took a dip last year. However, with his football IQ and experience, our receiving crop can definitely benefit.

Neither of them worthy of the #17 pick though. Don't you think?

The Charlotte Observer reports Oakland and Tampa Bay will be potential landing spots if/when Steve Smith is released, in addition to Baltimore.

We'd have to imagine Baltimore would be Smith's preference, though joining a veteran-laden Bucs squad that gets two shots a year at Carolina would likely have some appeal. The Raiders have no veteran talent at receiver, but would almost certainly have to overpay to lure Smith west. It wouldn't be an ideal setup for either side.

I can really see this Steve Smith happening. The mutual interest between them is great to hear. I would still draft a Lee or a Beckham to be an understudy to Smith though. Any receiver can learn a lot from him.

Ebron would. Amaro could be had in the second, I believe.

I would tweet Steve Smith all the comments around the league about how old and ineffective he is, then sit back and watch him in his final enraged form destroying secondaries.

Ebron is worth #17, in fact he probably won't even be there. I would put it past Ozzie to trade back for Amaro though. I have a feeling though if Ebron is gone we will address TE in the second round, still some solid talent at that position available at that point

Steve Smith is almost 35. I'd assume he wants a championship, not money. Which is probably why he has interest here. The raiders certainly can't provide that. and getting back at the panthers by joining the bucs probably isn't in his mind either. what hard feelings does he have against them? Its not like the Welker situation last year.

So has Steve Smith been officially released yet..or what? I feel like this is taking a good while. Maybe they are still trying to field trade offers or something. Its going to be interesting when he does get cut to see if we are his first visit.

that why they said the ravens make the most sense for him. and we do play carolina next year too. and i think it would be fun to watch steve smith and t sizzle jaw in practice. plus Bucs QB situation is up in the air and oakland is horrible so the ravens it is.

probably the ravens they are very close to the situation of steve smith proabably talking to him right now. and its the best place for him to go because he wants to stay close to home.
