Torrey Smith

Glad for the additions but it is still not enough!  None of that translates over to how these cats (offense) will play on the field.  I need to SEE the improvement...not just hear about it!

I agree with the seeing, but we can be mildly optimistic at this point, considering the changes that have been made. New coaching staff, a new WR, keeping some of our better FAs, adding a piece here and there. Now my optimism will increase considerably if I see something done with the o-line, via draft or FA.

There are apparently talks of Torrey Smith being extended before the draft

Bisciotti said nothing would make him happier than getting a contract extension worked out with Torrey Smith prior to the draft

Bisciotti said he saw Drew Rosenhaus, Torrey's agent, in the lobby today and said he told Rosenhaus, "We've got to get that done"

Bisciotti said Rosenhaus is scheduled to speak with Ozzie Newsome and Pat Moriarity regarding Smith here in Orlando

Bisciotti said he's optimistic the Ravens can get a contract extension worked out with Torrey at some point soon

I'd love to see it happen. He's Baltimore thru and thru.

Yeah it would be a major potential head ache that we wouldn't have to worry about in 2015

If Steve wants it, Ozzie will get it done. The man is on fire and the draft is still coming. The Wizard!!  :landry:

Would be really nice to lock Torrey up before the 2014 season.  If we can put together a solid O-line with a productive run game, I see Torrey having a very nice year, especially w/ Steve Smith taking some of the heat off of him.

Hopefully we can work out a deal that is fair to both the team and Torrey - he certainly deserves a nice paycheck.  Could be a little bit of a hometown discount in there, I can imagine that he'd like to stay in the area, especially after losing his brother in 2012...his family is obviously incredibly important to him.

I'd lock him up now... just in case he blows up in Kubiak's offense a la Andre Johnson. We don't want another Flacco contractual situation!  Even though I think Flacco was worth it, not locking him up earlier probably cost the Ravens $30-40 million.

5 years, $40M with $20M guaranteed should do the trick!

Maybe I'm being optimistic, but I would expect something between the Decker deal and what Pitta got. Maybe a little more guaranteed since Torrey is younger. That would be around 5 years 32-37 and maybe 18-20 guaranteed.

@ arnie, I think Brown got something like 5 years 50, but might be wrong.

Well Antonio Brown wasn't even at that level when he got his contract...he did nothing his rookie year, had 1100 yards and 2 scores in 2011, and put up 700 yards and 5 scores in 2012 before getting his $7M per year contract. (6yr/$43M)

Antonio Brown obviously went off this past year so Pitt knew what they were paying for but Id say Torrey has earned at least $35-40M on a 5 or 6 year deal. Im eager to see how he progresses this year too...he has been making steady improvements since he got drafted.

It would be smart to do it now. The direction this offense is headed, he might have a big year, and then it will really cost some $$

Yeah, get him signed. Probably the best value draft pick since 08.

Art Jones, Marlon Brown, Pitta and Webb. Ellerbee too. Paul Kruger gets a special mention for his work here during the SB run and netting us a 3rd rounder. Great pick Ozzie.

Marlon and Ellerbe weren't drafted, sorry.

I define think it would be wise to risk an extension now than risk him blowing it up this year with Kubiak and an improved OL with more weapons around him.

Will people be happy with a contract the same size as Antonio Brown? 5yr $40m?

If we could get away with that, yes. I was thinking it could be higher.

Love reading stuff like this.  Torrey obviously holds Baltimore and the Ravens very close to his heart - he does not want to leave.  That means that other teams would have to offer him a significant amount more than we were offering him to steal him away from us.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind that. I know people thinks that's high but we did just pay a soon to be 29 year old TE who is coming off a serious injury pretty good money. Steve Bisciotti wants Torrey back so I wouldn't be surprised at all if they give him that type of money.

I wouldn't go that far by saying 'significantly more'. If we offered Torrey a 5yr deal worth $40m, and someone else offered him a 5yr deal worth $42.5m I don't think for 1 second he would stay here. It's a business decision at the end of the day.

I don't think he leaves for $2.5 mil.

Torrey I believe is one of the guys who I think would probably give us a real hometown discount. He actually has roots here. I think it would take a decent amount more to persuade him to leave.

I hope it's not higher. I love Torrey, but he's an excellent #2 at best in my opinion. He doesn't have the consistency or hands to be a true number 1, again in my opinion.

it depends where.  You also have to think about his family, players have turned down more money to play here, it happens.  not saying he definitely wouldn't, but I think he'd stay if it were that small of a difference...

Now if it were 50m on the other hand.

If he truly does hold this place dear, a 6% increase in pay shouldn't alter his decision. It certainly wouldn't make me choose to move for a job and abandon everything I have.

He's smart enough to know that on the open market he'll get Mike Wallace money and then some.

Absolutely - I'm not saying that by any means Torrey will be cheap.  Just saying that we don't have to match what other teams are offering him to keep him here.  The hometown discount grows proportionally to the amount the player cherishes the city that he plays for.  If the player loves the city a lot, then the amount of money it would take to draw him away increases.  Family (for most players) increases their ties to the city, and thus increases the hometown discount.

Torrey was born around here, went to Maryland, then came to the Ravens.  He is obviously incredibly close to his family, and now is starting his own family in this area, with a baby on the way.  I can imagine that his ties are very strong to the area, and thus, the amount of money that it will take for a team to steal him away from us is decently big.  Obviously, if someone offers him $10mil more over 4 or 5 years, that's a big chunk of change for a relatively small amount of time, and I wouldn't be surprised if he took it.

My point is that he's worth Mike Wallace money, and if teams offer him Mike Wallace money, then we'll have to be close to that, but won't necessarily have to pay him as much as what the other teams are offering him.  The exact same thing just happened w/ Jacoby, who has relatively few ties to the area but loved our organization so much that he was willing to take less to continue playing here.

I think Torrey could get between 7-9M annually depending on how he plays. I think the sooner the better. It's a risk to gamble when a player is pointing up. I'd offer him 8M a year and be done with it.

Just 6%? Torrey is about to move into his first contract after his 2nd round draft money so expect his pay to at least double.
