Good job FO. Hope he stays healthy and puts up good numbers now. God knows Joe needs him to be there and be productive. Now on to Monroe...

This is a plus but if we lose Monroe to a bidding war with the dolphins or someone else we may still be in trouble. I honestly see us keeping oher (will be cheaper, durable and serviceable) now with the rumors of Monroe circling and then drafting a lineman early. Smith may come back but I also think so will McClain at a lower cap friendly contract.

Yeah, it would make zero sense to tag Monroe and keep him off the market unless the Dolphins wanted to give up a first round pick.

Based off of 50 catch average, we are paying him 120,000 per catch per year.

Edit: This isn't mean to mean he isnt worth it. I just think athletes are overpaid in general because this is techinically a good deal for a tight end.

He didn't get the type of contract he got because of his recent numbers, it's more about the numbers he IS GOING TO put up in the future. He's just starting out, he can get so much better and put up elite numbers if he stays healthy. By that time he'll be worth every penny of what he's making.

It's worth noting that he has only had 100 yards receiving and multiple touchdowns in a game once in his entire career, and that came against Denver in week 15 of 2012.

It's also worth noting his best season came in 2012, 61 catches for 669 yards and 7 TDs. Ironically we won the Super Bowl that year. It seemed that was going to be the start of something special with Pitta and he was going to catch on and become an elite TE. Then the injury happened. People are forgetting that when they say he is just an "average" TE. Sure it's not a 1,000 yard season but when he was just coming into his own and then the injury.

Art Jones hasn't put up huge numbers yet but he will get a huge contract because teams expect him to be elite in the next few years. It's pretty common in the NFL. Nobody pays you for what you've done, they pay you for what they expect you to do in the future. That's why Suggs didn't get a bigger contract now than he did a few years ago, because his numbers will slip. I think we all can agree that Pitta is a key element in our offense and that he has the skills to be a ~1000 yard receiver. He can put up close to 100 yards in each game, he's very hard to cover, he has great hands and he reads coverages well and always finds a hole. So based on all that I think he'll be worth that money. He needs to stay healthy of course. He's gonna get better. Based on his career numbers I agree, he doesn't deserve that much money, but based on what he will (hopefully) do in the next few years I think he will outplay that contract in about 1-2 years.

I could care less what Pitta's stats look like next year as long he is making the catches when needed. He's a proven performer in the red zone, has great hands and is in sync with Joe. This deal was a no brainer, we needed him to stay.

Im predicting a buzzer beater deal for Eugene Monroe before the tag deadline, maybe on Sunday or early Monday. And if all else fails we can tag him and continue to work on a deal.

If healthy Pitta has 1000 yard potential, but it seemed in the playoffs the last couple years he was really catching on and becoming a reliable TE having big games in all of our wins during the SB run. Note that he is making about 26 million dollars less than Rob Gronkowski too. Although its more than I expected for him to make its worth it. As of right now he is the best receiver we have in my eyes.

Its a tad more than I would have offered, but we also have to realize that we couldn't go into a brand new system change like Kubiak's with either a rookie TE or some plug we picked off the FA list or a camp cut.

This is one offseason I think our hands were pretty tied at the TE spot.

He's already 28 though, will be 29 at the start of next year.  He may get cleaner with his route running and a little more savvy, but his athleticism has already peaked.  He's at the tail end of his athletic prime.

But thats ok...he is still fast enough to separate and make big gains deep down field. My concerns for him are more about his injuries in relation to his age, obviously he is coming off a big injury and it might linger due to the fact that he isn't as young as spring time anymore.

I wouldn't say at the tail end of his prime. He is older, but I wouldn't say he's peeked yet. What does it mean? We probably won't be giving him a 3rd contract in 5 years. He defiantly has good football ahead of him.

While I'm happy pitta is apart of the team. I was hoping he'd get a deal around 5-5.5M/yr. Because even looking optimistically towards future production doesn't seem like he'll have huge numbers based off previous production.

I just hope he can remain healthy, and have a solid year.

Having Pitta back full time will make every receiver and RB on the field better if, I mean when we give this Team the O line they deserve.

Everyone complaining about Dennis' age need to understand that he hasnt played football nonstop since high school, he was on a two year mission trip as many BYU players opt to do. Thats two fewer years of hits, wear, and tear on his body. Wah, wah, wah he's 28 and he wont get more athletic. Does he need to be more athletic than he already is? I remember him completely extending and laying out to catch a ridiculous catch in one of his four games last year, I think he's pretty good in the athleticism department. If there is any one knock on Dennis, its not his age but his need to improve as a blocker.
