Whitner an option?

14 posts in this topic

He's about to become a free agent and I remember Eric DeCosta drooling over him during the draft. He basically said we were going to draft him but we weren't going to pass on Ngata. Whitner is in his prime right now and in terms of his playing style he fits our defense perfectly, definitely plays like a Raven. He's one of the best safeties in the game right now, a huge hitter and he's very athletic (4.4 speed). He's solid in coverage but he's more known for his run defense and tackling, I guess that's something that might turn Ozzie/Eric off right now because we need a true cover safety. But I don't see that guy being available. Delmas is not a cover safety, he's a run stopper and he's got some red flags. Byrd from the Bills fits the bill I guess but we would have to trade for him and I don't think he's worth it, we'd have to pay a steep price and quite frankly safeties aren't THAT important. I think we should either sign Whitner or re-sign Ihedigbo.

Won't have the cap space, Goldson got something like 5-42mil I believe.  Whitner is in the same vein payment wise.

Im not the hugest Whitner fan to begin with anyways.  We picked up Elam so he can fly around the ball and make plays at the LOS.  We just need a guy who can actually play over the top.  We continue to stick Elam there he's not going to be the player he's capable of being.

You definitely have Delmas and Whitner backwards.

Whitner is not a coverage safety at all. He's a job safety who can deliver a hit. He's also frequently fined and could risk being suspended. Sounds a lot like Bernard Pollard.

Delmas is a coverage safety, Not that great in run support. He may not be that ball hawk, but he is solid in coverage

Well that's the thing, Elam needs to learn both positions regardless. We didn't just draft him to be an in the box safety. He will have to play free safety at times, he has to be able to cover deep. Otherwise he's not gonna survive in the NFL and from what I've seen he can cover and he can become a good cover safety in the future. I don't see him as an extra linebacker type safety to the point where we need a FS who will have to play deep on every down. We need somebody who is decent in coverage, we don't have to get a true centerfielder like Ed once was.

Stevie Brown I think is also available. Had a great season with the Giants, then tore his ACL I believe. I'd rather have him over DeCoud. Malcolm Jenkins is another guy who can cover.

I love Hitner. He defines the Ravens mentality for sure. We simply can't afford him, someone out there will give him top safety money for sure.

Stevie Brown is a very interesting name. He's really good and he's a true play maker, but can he stay healthy? He likely won't command much money, but he'd want a short deal in all likelihood to function as a prove it type deal
