Pathogen-

15 yard penalty for the "N" word

42 posts in this topic

So take this with a grain of salt as it is on Yahoo Sports and their writers are abysmal...but what do you guys think of this?

I can imagine it now...15 yard penalty after every play when a black player talks to another black player "Nice hit n**ga!"  "tweeeeet   15 yards unsportsmanlike conduct!"

(unless they are racist and only flag the white guys for saying it)

There's something to be said for letting the game sort itself out on the field. When you mic everyone up and penalize them for the 'N' word where does it stop? How many other words will be 'illegal'?

I would get fired if I used that word at work. Why should that be permitted while the players are "working"? They can keep their mouths clean on the field.

Your work place can't be compared to an NFL game or environment.

I understand both sides of the argument - on the one hand that kind of language has no business in public, but on the other hand this job is unlike just about anything else; most NFL players need emotion to fuel themselves and keep going, and a lot of things that are said between the lines are understood to be just that; things said between the lines that have no bearing outside of football.  Do I think it's right to legislate blatantly dangerous or deliberately violent behavior e.g. spitting, biting, punching, out, yes, but this seems like an attempt to get rid of emotion in order to appease the PC world, and I don't think that's the way football needs to be played.

Why not just make it a flag for any type of bad language? I know I sound like a grade school teacher but I feel like I always hear players cussing on the field, at each other, at refs etc. Why not consider all cuss words and offensive language a foul and not just the N word.

Either way I feel like it is part of the game and with emotions and tempers flowing let everyone say whatever the hell they want

I'm not trying to be racist (in fact I'm trying to do the opposite), but I think black people say it way more than white people.

I vote no.

I saw a tweet saying to avoid controversy the Redskins will need to start the game off kicking from the 15.

Good point, so now are you going to ban that name, cause that's offensive.  Are they going to blur out the score board or fine the team?  Why not ban all cursing and inappropriate language?

Goodell essentially wants robots on the field who will do what he wants as he keeps filling his pockets.

How do you know they're not butt slapping and chest bumping in Moderator 3's office?

This sounds more annoying than anything. How can the refs hear everything everyone is saying? They can't catch it every time someone says it. And then will come the players who claim they said this, and not that (and some might be telling the truth). Also, instead of letting it go unnoticed to viewers, they are now pointing out what words are being exchanged.

Over the top! Enough already, grow up, in the heat of battle things will be said that are not up to us to judge, or a ref. who is left up to his interpretation of a rule that would cause more controversy than opinions based on personal perception. Just play the damn game! Come on man!! Like it or not this is the world we live in!

Not on a regular basis, anyway. :-)

Again I go back to all the claims that the NFL is just a business. If so, then act like it. When you're "at work", behave in a professional manner.

So you want these guys to bash the crap outta each other in a professional manner? Hows that work? Let the boys be boys and let the smack talk flow. As long as its not outright VICIOUS, let them say whatever they want. I want caged animals out there.

Wow! The Mass-media PR Machine has done it, again. With all the Cognito, NCAA Basketball, ESPN Documentary stuff going-on and fanning the flames on the "N-Word' nonsense - what better way to get the targeted young generation to take more interest in football? How else can they sell shoes, gear and Playstation?

The problems is that this rule was already covered in the NFL Playeers 2012 League Policies

Chapter 1 - Sportsmanship - Pharagraph 1:

"Officials will immediately call a foul if any unsportsmanlike conduct occurs anywhere on the field.

It is important to note that the unsportsmanlike conduct rules apply to all personnel in the team area, including players, coaches, team employees, and officials. Lack of respect or other unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated during games or at other times, including postgame interviews. This includes abusive, threatening, insulting, or profane language or gestures, and physical acts by coaches, players, and other club personnel directed at opponents, officials, game personnel, or fans."

The very fact that they have chosen to use the "N-Word' header to bring attention to the overall 'offensive league' amendment is offensive itself. The so-called 'New' sportsmanship language is potentially directed at 'all' insulting and/or inflamMatory language, not one word. My thought: Anyone and/or organization (NFL) that uses the 'N-Word' as bait to grab attention for measures already addressed is fishing in a stocked catch and release pond. I'm not biting. You never truly cared enough about that word or any other similar insult in the first place.

It's more like they have decided to insult themselves a little better against pending and future lawsuits. Shame on them.

To be honest, this is a little bit ridiculous in light of the fact that the Redskins are still the Redskins.  This has already been posted before, and maybe I have a slight bias against DC, but the fact that our nation's capital still has a blatantly racist name which has still not been adressed is more concerning to me than how players talk to each other on the field.

If players want to use that language on the field or in the locker room, well that's up to them.  They're professional athletes.  Most office buildings aren't mic'd up to capture everything every employee says.  If the NFL wants to censor statements by players, I'm pretty sure there's some sort of delay between the actual occurrence and the TV/radio broadcast. Whatever way, the culture of the NFL, which can also be linked to the culture of the entire U.S., is incredibly hard to change.  To be honest, a lot of people don't like to say that guys will be guys. However, I personally have no problem with players using whatever language they want on the field.  Use a ten second delay and censor mic'd up. Another fifteen yard penalty in the NFL serves no purpose to the advancement of the acutal game.

The NFL has so many bigger issues than this...  more media sensationalism, more P.C. stuff, and more drama....  GEEZ.

Will be hard to enforce with crowd noise as it is during the games and the officials have problems getting calls correct as it is and they will throw a flag because they "thought" they heard "the word"? Also a 15 yard penalty for this is bogus.

Coming soon to an office near you....  And this is just why it's soooooo ridiculous.  What is happening???  Everybody is listening...  Now, be careful, don't offend anyone.  Whatever happened to personal responsibility???.. key word there is Personal.
