Endless Winter

28 posts in this topic

All right, so I've been here for two Winters now. This is the most extreme of the two. Please be so kind as to tell me this isn't typical. I grew up in Ohio, so I've seen snow and ice. After going to Florida and living there for over a decade, I didn't miss the snow at all. Now I've seen enough snow to last me a long while, and we're getting anywhere from 6"-9" overnight/tomorrow, along with some sleet. And it had to hit when my husband's out of state, so there's no way I'm getting out of my driveway the next couple of days! I'm sick of this endless Winter!

Manbearpig certainly isn't helping...

But it's been one of the worst in years IIRC. My memory isn't the best but I can't remember it being this cold since I was like 10 in early 2000's

When I lived in MD we had two years of freak snowstorms lol... Sounds like it's been three in ten years...

Not normal at all...

This is NOT normal, and I'm sick and tired of it.

Well I'm glad to hear that. :) I am not a cold weather person at all. I would much rather be in my flip flops and sitting by a pool than looking out my window and seeing snowflakes. That's the only part about living here that I can't and won't get used to. My kids are even over the snow too, which I didn't think would happen.

been in Maryland 43 of my 44 years.

I do not recall ANY winter, this cold, this long, with this much snow.

We have had cold, we have had huge snowfalls, we have had long winters, but never all piled up like this.

Even a few years back we had those two huge 24 inch snow falls right back to back, it all melted with in a few days.

So, no in its totality, this is not normal.

This could very well be the new normal.  It could actually get worse.

In terms of coldness this year, this is a bad one. I don't think the fact that we had 2 mild winters the past 2 years helps with that either since it is more of a shock. In terms of snowfall however we have had far worse. In terms of number of storms, we are up there with the worst of the winters. However this is probably going to be our biggest storm of the season and we have had far worse storms.

For starters, there was February of 2003 when I measured 27 inches by the driveway. Then December of 2009 we got around 20 inches just before christmas. That same winter in February we got I believe the most we got in a single storm at around 30 inches at least. Three days later, we got at least 20 more inches of snow from another storm. I will probably never forget that winter. I believe we broke the record for most snowfall in one winter for the area. I just know I don't want to be around when that record is broken.

So basically in terms of cold, I agree that this is bad. In terms of quantity of storms, I agree that this is bad. But at least we are not getting one of those big ones unless this one suddenly rapidly intensifies which hopefully it does not(knock on wood). This hopefully will be the exclamation point on this winter and we can get a nice spring(knock on wood again).

I wouldn't shed a tear if it didn't snow another inch the rest of the winter, and I'm a college student with a crap ton of work due tomorrow, lol.  That's how much snow there's been.  But I wouldn't call this the worst winter I've ever had in MD, although it's up there.  There was snowmageddon, where it snowed huge in December, then back to back storms in February a few years ago, and last year, winter lasted well into April, which annoyed the crap outta me.

Let it be spring!!

You were lucky. We (in Prince William County at the time) got between two and a half and three feet that year, both times. When we shoved the snow out of the driveway, our piles along the sides where we were putting snow were taller than my mom's 5'10" husband.

The first uber snow we got also ended with a trip to the ER for him, which, luckily, was only about quarter mile away. I'd recommend using not a limb to remove compacted snow from a snowblower.

Actually 95-96 was brutal too, my father in law died in Jan and he was buried in early March because snow and ice. This sucks, sucks sucks x 10000000000000000000000!

My young dog will not go out and do her business, her sister died Tuesday so she has no guidance .

Sorry to hear about the loss of your other dog. :(

My dog won't go outside either. A kind man came and plowed my driveway about an hour ago, and even though it's covered again now, it's at least not as high as it was! :) My Labradoodle won't go anywhere but the driveway to do its business, and then he'll run back inside. He's my southern dog. I think it's just in his system to think, "what the heck is all this?" ;) I did get out in it earlier with the oldest two. My 2-year-old couldn't even walk well in it, it was so high on his body!

Here in NC, we got hit with some good snow. I went to work yesterday morning, got there at 7, nothing. By 9 or 10 it started to snow and got worse. By the time my store closed early due to the weather at 2:30, the roads were horrible. I have a Chevy Cobalt, not exactly made to drive in the snow/ice. I was sliding, slipping and even spun a few times.

It stopped snowing last night and is again snowing and is supposed to snow until 2 then clear out.

In terms of snowfall totals I think this is a normal winter.  I know in terms of temperature this is not normal; I believe January was the, or one of the coldest January's in the last one hundred years.  Outside of that this is not out of the norm.  We were spoiled the last two years with unseasonably warm winters.  I remember two years ago in the middle of January it was 65 degrees!

Just heard on the extended news that this is our 13th storm this season. THAT is definitely not normal. The prolonged cold is not normal, either.

Alamance got hit around 1, right when I was heading home from the store for a few things just in case they didn't plow at what I deem an acceptable rate, and I think we've currently passed the acceptable rate. Snowing lightly here currently, but a bit of snow melted before this started, so at least there's that. The one time I wish I had a small SUV or a Jeep instead of a compact...

I'm also kinda wishing I had a snow shovel considering I seriously doubt my complex will see a plow...

...There is a half inch of solid sleet on top of the snow. And I am one of two people in my entire building who's remotely strong enough to shovel this stuff, which is possible because someone left a snow shovel in the entryway.

Good workout.

Here in college everyone is complaining about walking it it. Its not even that far to walk and I'm used to it. I had to stand in deeper snow waiting for the bus.

Yeah, UMBC is closed today, so I can finish my work later.  B)

My take on winter is that I don't necessarily care as much about how cold it is in January or February (although I think this is definitely the coldest winter I've ever experienced), I just don't want winter to last well into March or April.  If we have a frigid and snowy Jan/Feb, but spring comes early, I'm happy with that.  Last year was the coldest spring I can remember, which I absolutely couldn't stand.

Thanks for the condolences, I wish our furry friends had longer lifespans.

You know RATW Im not sure we had much of a Spring or early Summer last year--I fractured my hip last Feb and thought it was the pain and drugs making me fuzzy in the brain lol.

I am so hoping this year is better.

Just spent 3 1/2 hours cleaning out my walkway/driveway, and part of the deck. I am very thorough and it was a good workout!

The news actually just referred to Chapel Hill as "the frozen tundra."

Pretty sure Maine, upstate New York, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, all these people would DEFINITELY disagree.

...It's above freezing there. Hence, not frozen.

Also, the snow is melting, albeit slowly.
