Report: LT Eugene Monroe one of Ravens' priorities

1,151 posts in this topic

I was glad the dolphins overpaid ellerbe that way he wasn't resigned to a too lucrative deal in Baltimore

If you really look at it, none of the guys we lost last year was worth close to what they got - Kruger a situational pass rusher paid like a top starter, Cary being paid like a top starter, Ed being pald like he was 30 instead of 36, Ellerbe being paid like he was a healthy 3 year starter at an important position.  Whether some fans like it or not, I really think the front office did the smart thing in letting all of those guys go.  In Monroe's case, I don't think he will command Trent Williams like money, but I think the Ravens will pony up and overpay him slightly to keep him

just tag him

It is odd that so many don't think he's worth the tag cost. If I'm correct, that cost is just below 10M. He is most certainly getting in that neighborhood on a long term deal, so I don't know why that is they way some are thinking,

I do believe we want to sign him long term before we have to use the tag, but I also think if we can't come to terms by then, we will use the tag. I think given the uncertainty around tagging Pitta and the whole TE vs. WR debate, that we'd lean toward using it for Monroe.

Me thinks you are right. The Ravens will pay market $ for Monroe, it makes sense.

Monroe, KO, Mack, Yanda, Wagner(?)    Would be a very stout group.

The tag is above $11M.  It sounds like a lot, but in the grand scheme of things, if we can lock him up to deal, the tag doesn't really matter.  The key is keeping him off the open market and the tag may be the only option.

Thanks for the correction ... I've seen some conflicting info on it, but I see that just about $11M is right. No doubt, if we have to use it, we'll be very motivated to complete the deal, since that full number hits our 2014 cap and a long term deal can be structured more advantageously.

And as you say, we have to keep him off the market. Especially with the Dolphins publicly stating they're set to come after him. That's a franchise that has been bloodied - especially on the O line and are going to be hungry to make up for their losses. They've got a ton of cap space and are going to be ready to spend it.

Plus, it's sounding like it's likely that we get something done with Pitta by Monday or shortly thereafter.  I've been hearing that we have a lot of work to do on Monroe, so it's looking like we have to tag him.  Hopefully we can hammer out both Pitta and Monroe this weekend and know where we stand for FA on the 11th.

After seeing what the Dolphins did with Ellerbe last year and the news that they're expected to persue Monroe, Ozzie said "Screw that. Cut Jameel & Vonta. We're going to war"

Ozzie won the war last year. The GM Ireland is fired.

"Right price, right player"

Were not going to be suckers on FA

Overpaying an ILB is one thing. Overpaying a franchise LT is another. Joe is priority 1, priority #2 should be protecting him. He's the best, and really only option.

Now since Pitta is done- TAG Monroe, won't get top OT in draft.  He is our best choice and is young enough.   He will not agree to contract prior to FA.  So tag him and move on at this time

Work on D Smith & Graham before free agency hits

Draft offense- a lot of players who can help

Get a FS to help out Elam in draft or FA (Byrd would be nice- but not much a chance)

Then Ozzie will work his magic and bring in some guys that complete our team

I think I'd rather not tag Monroe. Haven't we had just about enough of the malcontented LT?

Are you saying Monroe is malcontented or are you speaking to another LT who may have been of a poor disposition?

Because honestly I think Monroe has a very fair outlook on life.

Without Monroe, we'd have holes at LT, C, RT, and would have LG in question depending on how KO returns from his injury. Not to mention Ozzie already gave up a 4th and a 5th rounder to get Monroe here. If they can't get a deal done by the deadline, I believe they need to tag him. Can't let one of the top LTs especially with him only being 26 years old.

We need to resign Eugene Monroe he's a priority for Flacco by signing Pitta for cheap the Ravens have the money to give Monroe an acceptable contract. I think if we have too we will definitely tag him. We still would have enough money to possibly resign Smith and Graham or at least Smith. Even then we still have money to go after a veteran FA at WR, C, or FS.

I think he's saying that players hate to play under the franchise tag (which is true) and he wants to avoid another McKinnie who isn't motivated to play

No Monroe = an o-line in shambles. We need to have him signed long term and address Center and right tackle. I highly doubt the Ravens don't do everything they can to keep him, because our o-line would consist of a questionable LT, KO coming back from injury at left guard, Gino at Center, Yanda coming back off a so so year, and someone new at RT.

Exactly, not to mention Gaither.

ive always viewed the tag as during the season the player will probably play as a well as he can with hopes of a free agency pay day after the season thus needing to play at a high level. yes he will maybe sign the tag as late as possible and miss as much camp as he can but it would be foolish on his end to not play his best to keep his free agency value high.

Players hate the tag because it has no benefits for injury or long term assurance. They're not motivated to play hard because they could risk injury, and that money is all guaranteed. It's not like a regular contract with incentives where they have to earn it.

Eh, I could see the point if Monroe had been a Raven for a couple of years, but I don't see him getting miffed in this situation. I'm sure he and his agent realize the likelihood of the tag if they push hard. I just don't see him him losing motivation if it happens and there's still the chance a deal gets done prior to the season.

i understand the dislike of it as the player for the lack of security a long term contract offers. Lets say they play terrible all year to "avoid" injury who is going to pay them the following free agency for a poor season? pretty sure most players are known to perform better on their last year of a contract.  tagging wont make Monroe play worse is all im saying.

Tag him now, work out a deal before the season.  Or draft a replacement to develop so we are good next year, when we need the cap space for Jimmy Smith and Torrey Smith! That's what I think Ozzie will do.
