Report: LT Eugene Monroe one of Ravens' priorities

1,151 posts in this topic

Plenty of people are out here talking about the deal Jason Peter's got ... I"m sort of surprised there wasn't a br.com article about it, as it is a significant development in our own negotiations.

You have to think that Monroe, based on his age, is going to be asking for more.

Except Monroe won't get that. Peters is a six time Pro-Bowler and a five time All-Pro. Monroe is neither. Monroe is great, easily top 10 and arguably top 7, but Jason Peters is one of the best, if not the best, left tackles in the league. How did he go undrafted?

just read miami wants monroe as well any chance we lose him?

If Miami wants to spend more than he's worth they'll get him.

People around here have no concept of how much LT's get.

However Russell Okung, Joe Staley and I believe Ryan Clady got less than Peters got.

Good point - while Monroe has age on his side, Peter's has achievements that Monroe can't match. But I think teams are going to be willing to pay for his future potential and are going to look at Monroe as someone who has the obvious physical gifts and that we've yet to see his best. He'll be viewed as having been buried on a perennial loser like JAX and then was on a seriously dysfunctional unit last year, so given the right situation, he could flourish.

So, perhaps I was wrong in saying that he would likely want more ... this contract definitely is going to set a mark that teams in the bidding for his services are likely going to have to, if not match, at least approach.

True, then double dip in the draft at TE?

yes... I feel we can get 2 good tes and a good wr in this draft along with a lineman rb and safety or cb with the picks we have. This draft is deep and not to mention the undrafted talent that may be out there.

This Jason Peters deal is no good for us. I hate the Eagles because they always do this. They give out this big deal contracts that end up inflating prices and then they cut the guy. Just like Asomugha. I need to see how it is structured but I'm sure that's how they did it again. Gave Peters a ton of money up front with little at the back-end.

We need to sign Monroe, no question. Give him a good deal, don't try to dance around with lower figures. Give him what he deserves and get it done.

I want to franchise Monroe, now that we have the capspace.  he'd probably have eaten 7 million anyway in the cap.  We're basically paying 4 million to keep him of the market.

The Ravens brass better stop playing around and get Monroe deal done, the dolphins are waiting in the wings to pounce on him. Give that man a fair value price

Yeah, that's the same as Russell Okung and Ryan Clady ish value.

That's probably higher than we'd like, but that's the market.

He's better than Okung, but not as good as Clady

I read a tweet from Jason La Canfora that a deal with Pitta may happen before or just at the start of free agency. If that's the case and we are that close with Pitta, why not just slap the tag on Monroe now to at least keep him from leaving and give Ozzie more time to work out a long term deal.

I will take Monroe over Pitta. Pitta doesn't block, he's not a huge target, and rumor is he wants WR tag which would be bout same as OT...

You can find starting TEs in the back of most drafts, much harder to get a LT

I would imagine they'd want to wait as long as possible because what if he's okay with playing under the tag? It's a lot of money earned that way

Kinda starting to wish we would pay Monroe and then get kinda stingy for the rest of the year. Even if that means no Pitta and/or Smith.

Why would you want them to get stingy after signing Monroe? Also, getting Daryl back has to be a huge goal. The Mike linebacker spot is so very important to a defense and I'd honestly argue it's the most important position in the defense (maybe second in the 3-4)

The guy wants money, obviously. I'm not sure what number that is but our O-line needs some investment. Not saying that this is the route we should take, but a scenario where I could feel more content. Biggest improvement needed IMO, o-line.

Let's assume worst case scenario on Montoe. He signs for $$10 million a year and his cap hit is $10 million. Then the Draft class should cast about $5 million. That still leaves $8 or so million if we do not cut Koch, Leach, and McClain, all three who would represent a collective savings of close to $6.5 million, if I remember correctly. I think the Ravens can afford to be ballsy this year

Won't work, Monroe is looking for a WR designation too.

Sounds good to me. Give me a Monroe contract and any other improvements are just icing on the cake. I just hope we are willing to dish out that 10 mil/ year. Would he be more willing to sign with us if we front loaded the contract though? That's what I meant by getting stingy if we had to, where he takes up a large cap number this year and future years he's pretty cap friendly. Smith is a relatively short term investment, and even Pitta is up there in age.

For Monroe, I don't think it matters if it is front loaded or not. He's very young, so it's not like his play would decline and we'd be stuck with a contract similar to Ngata, in all likelihood (I hope). I hope Smith signs here for 3 more years, and Pitta, I see a four year contract.

I want Alex Mack more than anything after Monroe.

i know i want Alex mack to  but we might have to go with Brian De la Puente which he might cost 10-20 million cheaper.

I really hope the Ravens can get a deal done with Monroe. His age, ability are a major plus. The price we paid to get him was high given the teams dislike of trading draft picks. Of course, there's always a couple of teams that just go all out and break the bank and I fear Miami is the front runner to blow up the scale. We need Eugene, just hope the Oz man can work this all out. Is he worth the "tag"? Wow!

I hope they don't waste draft picks by letting him go. The first time the team has a proven LT since JO, and theres a risk they won't pay him what he wants. I say PAY THE MAN, we know what hes capable of, its hard to find good LTs in todays game, Flacco finally has a blindside protector and you paid the man 120 million, yet they might just let a proven LT go and have Flacco unprotected? Whose going to block for him? Oher? (HA), a unproven rookie LT?

I'm really starting to dread whenever FA comes around every offseason, for some reason we are always the pickings of the league. I'm beginning to hate the dolphins just for the fact they just throw money around to try to bring people in. Beginning to think the Dolphins want to be the Ravens and not the Jets wanting to be the Ravens.

Can Ricky Wagner play LT?

After seeing what the Dolphins did with Ellerbe last year and the news that they're expected to persue Monroe, Ozzie said "Screw that. Cut Jameel & Vonta. We're going to war"

That's what it seems like

we only would end up losing one draft pick if we don't resign him right? since we more than likely would get a 3rd or 4th round compensation pick for him in 2015?

Yea but think of it like this what the likelihood that Joe dosent have a quality blind side if we don't go 4 Monroe ?

85-90% ?

True, but the alternative is missing out on all of the left tackles at the top end of the draft.  I could easily see a situation where Matthews, Robinson, and Lewan are all gone, and then what do you do?

I was glad the dolphins overpaid ellerbe that way he wasn't resigned to a too lucrative deal in Baltimore
