Report: LT Eugene Monroe one of Ravens' priorities

1,151 posts in this topic

Jason Peters just got over $10M per year in his deal.  That doesn't help.

that's not what I wanted to read lol, was thinking he'll get something in the 8-9 range...

Yeah it's not good for us.  I thought we'd reach common ground on deal in the $7-8M range originally, but if a 32 year old pulled over $10M per year, I'm lost on what Monroe's value is.

I think we're looking at $9 million for Monroe. He's not as good as Jason Peters and didn't have nearly as good of a season, but he is still one of the better tackles in the NFL. I honestly hope this Jason Peters deal pushes along the Monroe deal

when i tried to look for a deal for him in our little game (as i thought you could do that after franchising him lol), I went looking at what Beatty (7.5) and Long (8.5) got paid, them being the most recent deals and close to Monroe's age... but that just got blown apart with this new deal and news of cap going up

The only option right now may be to hammer down hard on a Pitta deal and tag Monroe.  Monroe's price is admittedly higher than I thought it would be.

Yea unless we are willing to pay Monroe $10 mil per year. Maybe with the additional cap this year we might be more willing to lock down the LT position. Its more than I want to spend, but it probably is the most important piece on our team right now. Any idea what the Tag hit for him would be?

It's somewhere between $11-12M if I remember correctly.  Sounds like a lot, but we may have no other choice if we wish to keep him.  Even if it's only a temporary solution until we can get a long term deal done, I think it would be the best option to keep him off of the market.

Yup, that would suck, but at least with the cap increasing that much, most of that would be freed up from the cap increase alone. Hopefully even if we tagged him we could lock him up with a nice 8-10 mil deal that can work for both sides.

I think that almost has to be the plan now.  This Peters deal gives him all of the leverage, and working out a deal by Monday seems very unlikely.

I'm afraid your right, unless we are just willing to get it done like we did with Joe, we will have no choice.

Reports that the Eagles extended Jason Peters for a deal that is basically a 5 year, $51 million with $19.5 million guaranteed. So an average of $10mill a year for arguably one of the best LT in the game.

Helps set the market for Monroe. Even though hes 32, Peters has proven to be one of the best at the position, and just came back from injury to maintain his previous level of play.

Said it before and I think this re-confirms it, but I see Monroe worth 5 years, $45 million with around $20mill guaranteed.

Monroe is one of the best on top of being only 26 years old. He's well worth 9-10 million a year. The Ravens cannot afford to lose him especially with there probably being changes at at least two other positions on the offensive line. I hope this deal does push Monroe's deal to get done.

We need to get that Pitta deal done then and tag Monroe. Then we can use the tag to negotiate a deal but he is too important to let go at this point.

Trust me, I love Monroe and everything he did to keep Flacco from getting killed last season. I say pay the man. He is totally worth $9 million a season, especially after you paid your quarterback $120 million. Keep him healthy.

Monroe is crucial to this offense, and overall team success. We simply can't afford to lose him. Giving Oher franchise Lt $$ would never be worth it, regardless how much I do love the guy.

We need Monroe as our Franchise LT in so many ways, that it truly affects everything this off-season. Signing him to a long-term deal gives us stability at LT that we haven't had since Ogden. I'm not saying he is JO, but he is a LT that is consistent, and durable that will stay in the lineup and play at a high level.

IF we can't retain him, it changes the entire draft philosophy. And I think, everyone here knows that we need a 1st round caliber pass catcher to move forward successfully.

PS. Not sure why everyone thinks Pitta will expect some massive contract? When you dissect his numbers, it simply doesn't warrant big time money. And trust me, I love, and want to keep Pitta as much as anyone. But we need to be reasonable.

I would love to keep monroe and oher for consistency. Oher yanda jensen/gradkoski ko and monroe. Let pitta walk on for a big contract. We can pick up 1 maybe 2 good tes in thus draft and wr. Also look out for the center at UNC... hes a beast.

I like pitta but I would rather worry about Monroe then him and get a te or 2 in the draft.

I'd say no on Oher.  Even though I think he takes a lot more crap from fans than he deserves, I think it's time to part ways.  No disrespect, but both sides need a change of scenery.  I do think he deserves some respect for constantly changing positions and never complaining, but it's time to move on.

True, I like a lot of the TEs in the draft but I like most of them as blockers more except the first round guys. Either way, I really really really don't want to count on a rookie LT so we need to either keep Monroe or get a good FA LT. The question is who else? Albert is good but he is injury prone, the Raiders are more than likely going to re-sign their guy, Collins on the Bengals is good but he is unproven.

thats why I say worry about monroe and if pitta walks he walks and saves us to look at a ball hawk free safety as well.

True, then double dip in the draft at TE?

I hope Monroe does not walk along with our 4th and 5th round draft picks.

I think the Ravens make a reasonable offer in the $7-8 million range.  If he ends up signing with another team for $9-10+ million we let him walk.  The bright side of that scenario is he will likely be amongst the highest paid free agents and could net us a third round 2015 comp pick.  So essentially we traded a 2014 5th rounder for half a season and a leg up chance of re-signing him.

Ozzie and Co. are too smart to break the bank all on one player when they know they have a good chance of hitting another diamond like Daryl Smith from the FA market.

We also have Michael Oher who we haven't heard much about so maybe Ozzie has some tricks up his sleeve. I'd like to see:

Pitta - 4 years, $19 million

Monroe - 5 years, $37 million

Oher - 3 years, $18 million

Smith - 2 years, $6 million

Draft Marquise Lee in the 1st round.

Let's get'er done.

You do realize that we've been looking for a long term answer at LT since Ogden retired, right?  It's not an easy position to find.

I'd take Anthony Collins for cheap than overpay for Monroe and have a chance on Lewan or Zach Martin falling to us. Spend the money from Monroe on the defense and draft a TE and WR in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

Plenty of people are out here talking about the deal Jason Peter's got ... I"m sort of surprised there wasn't a br.com article about it, as it is a significant development in our own negotiations.

You have to think that Monroe, based on his age, is going to be asking for more.

If the information I found is accurate, the tag for an O line is just under 10M. As far as I can tell, there is only one tag for the entire O line and is not broken down by position - so LT gets the same as a RG ... which is crazy ... especially in light of all the TE vs. WR talk with regard to Pitta.

I have to think the tag is cheaper than his asking price ... although I realize that there is the issue of having the entire tagged amount hitting your cap in year 1 (when long term contracts reduce current year hit and back load). Still, not beyond the realm of possibility that we use the tag for Monroe and not Pitta (especially given the potential positional controversy).
