Report: LT Eugene Monroe one of Ravens' priorities

1,151 posts in this topic

Yet nothing on Monroe. That is very, very interesting that teams prefer other OTs over Monroe.

Yeah the one team I'd be worried about is Oakland with their deep pockets, but if they're not willing to pay Veldheer then they're certainly not going to pay Monroe.

Ian Rappaport @rapsheet is reporting that the Dolphins are setting their sites on Albert, the Cardinals are going for Veldheer and the a Raiders are looking at Saffold. Either Monroe has priced himself out of the market, or no other team is willing to pony up the money and match the Ravens offer for for what is an above average tackle who has never seen a pro bowl or a winning season. Either way, it shows once again why Ozzie does what he does.

You can always count on Aaron Wilson.  His last few tweets:

"Sources predict for tackle market: Albert to Dolphins, Veldheer to Cardinals, Saffold to Raiders,. Collins to Buccaneers, Monroe to Ravens"

"Raiders have been talking with several tackles, including Monroe and Saffold. Buccaneers have talked with Saffold and Collins."

And an article: http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/ravens/ravens-insider/bal-sources-ravens-maintaining-dialogue-with-eugene-monroe-still-hopeful-deal-could-be-reached-20140309,0,3032756.story

Monroe is still a possibility then.

Could just as easily be a smokescreen. I think Monroe is going to get a market

probably not with the dolphins at least from what i heard they close on a deal for Albert. rapoport just suggested the raiders go after saffold that not something the raiders said they where doing.

Shoot if I was the Raiders I'd just draft Robinson and have my guy for years.

Not sure if you're being serious, but how do you propose they get up to (possibly) the second pick?

True, the Dolphins seem to like Albert and there were rumors last year that they would trade for him. If the Dolphins are out of it, then I am nervous about Oakland but I think they will want Veldheer. Arizona probably wouldn't be able to pay him as much and maybe they go for Saffold.

But if the Raiders sign a LT, it puts them in position to draft a quarterback or maybe Sammy Watkins.  They have the cap space, so to me it actually makes sense that they go out there and sign a LT to fill the void, then choose a QB or receiver - the FA LTs, when compared to the draft prospects, are much more favorable than any FA QB or receiver.

Lol I'm making a joke that they yet again seem to be going backwards.

Man I hope we can keep Monroe. That would set us up really well. We could really focus our draft on much more pressing areas.

I have a quick question for someone: how is the cap hit determined? Let's say we sign Monroe for an $8 million/yr contract would the cap hit be 8 million or how do they determine the number?

Depends on the signing bonus.  It gets structured over 5 years.  So let's say we give him a $20M signing bonus.  Each year for 5 years would count $4M against the cap.  Then, you have to factor in base salary, which there is no set way to determine.  We'd most likely backload though, so it would probably be $1M or so, creating a $5M cap hit.

I think I'd take Monroe at 9 mil. At this point, we need stability at left tackle, and with all the other negative arrests news, we could just use some good news.  He's better than Albert, and it would frankly be nice if we pay less than Miami to get Monroe.  I'm a little surprised that Veldheer would be so much cheaper though...

Thanks for the explanation! I just hope that by retaining Monroe at a high salary will still leave us with some space to sign some of our other free agents as well as outside help.

It's also possible that we give him a higher base salary because we have more cap room than normal, which would lessen the cap hit in future years.  If I had to make a guess though, I'd assume his cap hit (pending he's re-signed) will be $1M base salary + his proration of the bonus.  $10M annually could end up equaling to a $5-7M cap hit in year 1.

No, the bonus is evenly divided over 5 years or so, but you can structure the base salary any way you want.  For example, Joe's base salary this year was 1 million, while his signing bonus comes to 5.8 million every year - so if you tack 5.8 to 1, you get his 6.8 million cap hit for the 2013 season.  Every year after this Joe has that same signing bonus tacked on to his base salary, plus miscellaneous bonuses that get added to the cap hit if he reaches certain milestones.

So in Monroe's case, if he gets a contract for 8 million/yr for 5 years, it could be something like a 15 million signing bonus, meaning you tack on 3 million to every base salary every year, plus whatever option bonuses there are (those are for things like playing x amount of snaps or making the pro bowl).  So Monroe could have a base salary of 1 million next year, and if his signing bonus was 15 million, his cap hit for 2014 would be 4 million.

You can see the advantages with this would be giving us more cap space short term, but long term you use up a lot more cap on 1 player.

He is making a prediction..... not determining where is going to land

It's a little more than that.  An article posted is essentially saying that Albert and MIA have agreed, Veldheer and ARI have agreed, and Saffold and OAK have agreed.  Obviously, nothing can be official until Tuesday, but word is that these things are as close as they can be to being done at this point.  That leaves us and TB.

Yes, quite aware thanks. More times than not, whatever he reports come true, whether it's a prediction or not.

I think he is coming back to Baltimore for sure now. They have "optimism" a deal can be reached and Monroe now knows he's not going to get much of a better offer than the Ravens are giving him. I think the Ravens are going to give him $10 million a year because they realize how important Monroe is. He probably just waits till Tuesday to announce anything just incase someone give him that bigger offer.

True, but a few other sources have linked Albert to Miami, and Arizona wants Veldheer.  AW says Oakland is looking at Saffold, and in the meantime apparently Monroe really isn't drawing much interest that we know of.  It could all be a smokescreen, but I think it's more likely they saw his contract demands and figured the other guys would come cheaper because of other concerns.

Miami was basically a game out of the playoffs last year. They were essentially like us in some ways. Had their moments on D, inconsistent O, and couldn't protect their QB worth a damn. Oakland is definitely in worse shape still. Plus I think south Florida is more attractive to many players than the bay area.

Oakland is a rebuilding project for sure, but miami is rotten at the top.  Not the core.

From the sounds of it if it is more it's very little.  The market was cooler than we thought.
