Report: LT Eugene Monroe one of Ravens' priorities

If he tests the market he is as good as gone.

We'd avoid overpaying though. Hard to tell if it's better to overpay or to let him go

He was signed under a new deal, but I'm failing to see how that matters.

If he signed a new deal then you may have a point. I'd like to get answers to that myself but we might not have got a comp pick for Redding if we signed a UFA in return

The FO has a history of overpaying for players they deem worthy. I think Monroe is worth it, but I guess we shall see.

Redding didn't qualify for comp picks at all.

Again, I have no clue what the rule is since they don't publicize comp pick conditions, but if the past is any indication, it is possible that Monroe would not qualify.  I'm not saying it as fact, but merely bringing up the possibility since the 2 situations are nearly identical.

Tbh I'd almost say overpay - especially with the cap increasing and supposed to increase further over the next two seasons. He's a quality LT entering his prime and I think we're picking too late to get someone as good (and as sure a thing) as him.

I still stand by my opinion that the only way he doesn't get tagged is if Ozzie feels like he can get a deal done before March 11th.

No way do you give up a top ten LT after trading a 4th and a 5th rounder for him.

Samuel Njoku of the Examiner and CBS suggests that we're vigorously trying to get a deal done, and that's why we haven't tagged him just yet. Getting it done in the 11th hour

Has anyone seen any new news on Monroe... is he going to get franchised or he free to test the market or maybe we got lucky and are on the verge of signing him.

I guess it goes back to what I said earlier that the Ravens and Monroe have probably been in the Castle since the crack of dawn just to get this deal done and avoid the tag.

Good news. No word of tag status means that #Ravens and Monroe are trying vigorously to hammer out deal. Stay tuned

Didn't realize that. I've heard before that we can recoup a comp pick so hopefully thats better news. Does anybody know the answer to this?

I don't think anyone is going to know.  The NFL doesn't publicize anything on comp picks other than compensation is based largely on the size of the contract, so it's all a guessing game until the situation actually happens.

What if we gave Monroe the transition tag like the Browns gave Mack? Is that a possibility?

It wouldn't stop a team from offering him a contract that we're not prepared to match.  WIth Mack, they're essentially committing $10M to the cap on him, which shows that they're willing to match almost any offer he gets.

And Mack isn't going to happen...

Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter

Browns are placing the transition tag on center Alex Mack, which will give Cleveland chance to match any offer sheet he would sign.

Wouldn't Alex still have a chance to choose where he goes?

The Browns have the right to match an offer made on him.  They'll match it if they're willing to pay him $10M this season.

Perhaps we should have done that with Monroe.

Then again, maybe they are too busy working out a deal to be bothered with it..

FIgured that. And the Browns have a huge amount of cap space and would be able to match any offer some team would give him.

It doesn't make too much sense on Monroe since it's likely a team would offer a contract that we can't match.

I feel like Miami has so much space they'll most certainly be too much to compete with

that didn't answer my question

He doesn't get to choose unless he gets multiple offers and the Browns choose not to match any.

I have a feeling Miami will have to way overpay to get anybody to go there right now.

Well, with it not looking like he's getting tagged, hopefully this means that we feel that we're close to a deal and didn't feel the need to keep him off the market.
