Report: LT Eugene Monroe one of Ravens' priorities

1,151 posts in this topic

Just received from mobile notification from NFL.com the Ravens and Monroe are "far apart" in contract negotiations. But the article doesn't say anything in depth, just that "unnamed sources" said that, followed by nothing else relevant to the store.. smh Poorly written article....

It's Aaron Wilson. Not poorly written and probably quite accurate.

I doubt we let Monroe go. Pretty sure we get a deal done soon, just might have to tag him first.

If we decide the tag would be overpaying, who plays LT? Wagner? Oher? I don't like those odds.

The problem with letting Monroe go is that we'd have to completely re-build the line. We'd return Yanda and KO, who might have recurring back problems, but we'd need to fill holes at LT, RT, and find an upgrade at C. It's not good to go into an offseason with THREE holes on the line.

This whole situation is really pissing me off.  Are we really going to let him test the open market?  We gave up two picks for him.

Exactly, there is no way we can replace 3 starters, and have them be better then what we had last year.

I think the best option for us would be to keep Monroe and move KO to RT and replace the LG either through draft or FA. Some big guys can't play G without developing back problems. JO played LG his rookie year and complained about back problems, and was moved to LT and he was fine. This could be the case with KO.

Would we even qualify for a comp pick for Monroe if we do end up losing him?  This is something I've been pondering for the past few days but since no one knows the comp pick formula, I don't think we'll know unless it happens.  When we signed Cory Redding back in the day, he didn't qualify for a comp pick because the final year of his contract was voided.  He was technically a UFA, but since his original contract was altered, he no longer qualified and we got him without having to worry about the whole comp pick thing.  When we acquired Monroe, the final year of his contract was also voided.  I don't know if the same holds true when a player is traded, but it is food for thought when thinking about the potential loss of draft picks.

You do.  You inherit his rights.  Same as franchise tag, RFA or First round rights.

But that's the same thing that happened with Redding, except Monroe was an in-season trade.  Redding was traded to Seattle in the offseason, and when they acquired him, the final year of his deal was also voided, making him a UFA.  The only difference in the Monroe situation is that he was traded during the season, and not the offseason.

I remember reading on the site that we get comp picks if we cannot resign Monroe

Are they aware of the similar Redding situation though?  I honestly have no clue if the same holds true when comparing offseason and inseason trades, but it's something to consider.

Redding was in his second contract.  Monroe was in his first.  The second contract can have all kinds of weird stuff

I don't see how that would matter.  Being in the first or second contract doesn't affect comp picks.

No but it affects your free agency status on the back end of deals.  Monroe's contract was not voided, he was on our roster and becomes a free agent.  There was probably a clause that triggered a release in Redding's deal.

No it's the exact same situation.  Both teams voided the last years of the deal at the time of the trade.  Redding had 2 years remaining when he was traded, but the final year of his contract was voided and he played out the 1 year remaining.  It wasn't voided during the offseason where he immediately became a UFA.  The same exact thing happened with Monroe.

likelehood of Monroe getting signed looks very slim now, unfortunatly it looks like the tag and about 12 million in cap space tied up for Monroe.

I don't think we will tag him. Probably letting him test the market

Monroe signed a 5 yr deal as a rookie. He's entering his 6th yr. Redding probally had some sort of clause where he could void the last year of his contract.

Agreed but everybody thinks I'm an idiot cuz I don't think we should overpay average talent.

Redding didn't void it.  The team did.  The situations are identical other than the fact that one was traded in the offseason and one in the middle of the season.

If he tests the market he is as good as gone.

That's my thoughts exactly. If he hits the market, the Dolphins and Cardinals are going to pounce. Can we compete with the Dolphins?

He completed his rookie deal. Did he sign an extension or something. Where did he get a 6th year?

He was signed under a new deal, but I'm failing to see how that matters.

If he goes for the dollars no. They overpaid for Wallace and they'll do the same with Monroe. Steven Ross is not much differnt than Jerry Jones and Dan Snyder.
