Was the 2000 Defense the Best of All Time?

40 posts in this topic

Hey Guys,

I was just reading an article (http://statsports.net/?p=108) and it ranked the top three defense of all time. It actually put our 2000 D at #1 of all time above Seattle and the Bears. What do you guys think about this? Are we actually the best defense of all time?

Best single season, bar none.  Defense allowed 4 less points a game than Seattle's this year and had more turnovers as well as defensive touchdowns I believe.

Best single season defense of all time. The only reason you could make a case for the Bears to Bucs is because they invented defenses, but I would still take the Ravens in any generation

From what I've read the Tampa 2 the Buccaneers used to such effectiveness was actually a defense used by the Steelers in the 1970s, Dungy having played on those teams just brought the philosophy with him to Tampa.

To me its a tie between 1985 Bears and 2000 Ravens.

Can't let you do that, StarFox!

Think of it this way - the 1986 Bears offense scored 22 PPG, the 2002 Bucs just over 21 PPG, the Seahawks this year 26 PPG. We scored under 21 PPG, and each of our losses came when we scored less than a TD on offense.  We shut out 4 teams - I believe those three I mentioned had a combined 4 shutouts. Given the shutouts plus the shear ineptness of our offense in 2000 (especially when you consider that Trent Dilfer actually made our offense better than it was in the first half of the season) I'd say we are the best.  Oh, also you should consider that we didn't allow a single offensive point in the Superbowl that year - the Giants only score was a kickoff return TD.

That's about as fair an analysis as I've seen when it comes to ranking defenses. While it's almost impossible to mean fully compare stats across different eras of the game, comparing each defense to league averages for that particular year makes a lot of sense. Not to mention, I agree with the conclusion 100%

Swap out Herring, Burnett and Goose with prime Reed, Suggs and Ngata.

Well now that's just not even comprehendible

Can we throw in the almighty Dan Cody as well?

If it comes down to the 85 Bears and the 00 Ravens then i'll drink the Koolaid and take the Ravens.

yes it is the greatest of all time. better season long performance, better super bowl performance, and the only team that performed better throughout the playoffs was the 85 bears because they went on a 2 game tear.  more turnovers, less point allowed, and won the super bowl with hands down the worst offense out of any of those teams. the only argument to be made for seattle was how bad they made the greatest offense in the history of the league look, but you also should take into consideration that peyton is the number 1 big game choke artist of all time. aside from that, seattle isnt even close.

Here is an article from Grantland, featuring a chart ranking the top defenses in NFL history according to advanced statistics and standard deviations under (under being good in this circumstance) the mean. Believe it or not the 2000 defense isn't even the top RAVENS defense of all time. At least according to these figures the 2006 defense is actually the best ever, although there are plenty of other ways to determine this. I found it very interesting though.

Are there any good online videos/compilations of the 2000 defense?  Those things always pump me up but they can't be found on YouTube.
