The hot new debate '00 Ravens or '14 Seahawks defenses

47 posts in this topic

If they had made it past the Colts, I'm pretty sure that team wins the SB.  I was so sick that they hold the Colts to 15 and still lose.  It's like the 13 offense traveled back in time to play that game.  I didn't take that loss well at all.  That defense was amazing.  Ray probably at the end of his prime, yet still highly productive, Suggs was still fresh, AD, prime Ed Reed and a young hungry Ngata.  That whole defense was STACKED.  I feel every player on that defense could've started on any team and even some of the back ups.

On topic, I don't think they are better than our 06 or 00 defense.  The only defense I MIGHT put ahead of ours... and it pains me to say this is...  Never mind, purple shades going on, we're the best.

Not to mention a highly productive Trevor Pryce, Bart Scott in his prime and McAlister.  60 freaking sacks, and that's not even half the story of that defense.

00 Ravens weren't the best defense of all time.

85 Bears? 76 Steelers?

I'll give you the Steelers.  I feel the Bears D is debatable.

Everyone on that D was a beast.  Dawan before the injury, Rolle was still playing at a high level and Buddy Lee.

Listen, I know a handful of steelers fans who agree with this.

But I hate ranking things? All these defenses were great, and when you factor in the fact that offenses didn't start booming until recently(1996 ish.....) it makes it hard.... The game has changed, and ranking is pointless.

Put Dan Marino in today's era. He'd destroy everyone. Hell, he did in a run first era. He'd be the definition of unstoppable.

This. It's why I think the Greatest QB of All Time argument is academic at best.

I don't see how anyone could even put the 13 Seahawks in the same category. Maybe safe to say it's THEIR best defense ever as a franchise. But all time? No way.

The thing that makes it more impressive is that the Ravens defense had to do it while that offense was horrid. They could move the ball decently but couldn't put points on the board. Seattles defense jad the luxury of having a much more efficient offense to work with

And 15 years after the Bears played, when offenses actually scored more points, the Ravens allowed 23 points throughout the postseason and 7 of those were on a fluke KRTD. They held the Denver Broncos, who were a PHENOMENAL offense at the time, to just 3 points. They held the Titans to just 10. They held Rich Gannon and your beloved Raiders to 3 points. The Ravens allowed ZERO points on defense in the Superbowl. ZERO.

So........... where's your argument again?

1985 teams averaged 21.4 points a game. Bears only let 12.375 points a game. 58%

A little higher than Ravens but Ravens never had to go up against Joe Montana (whom they limited to 10 points and zero passing TDs). They limited HOFer Tony Dorsett to less than 50 yards rushing. Roger Craig less than 50 as well. Hell Jerry Rice only got 37 yards and Dwight Clark only had 41. They picked off Joe Theismann twice and didn't let him get any TDs. HOF WR Art Monk only had 14 yards...

These guys shut down HOFers

Dan Marino was the only one able to score on him and take away that game they only let up 10 points a game.

Most of them aren't HOFers but I agree it's impressive regardless. Still, the Bears had more shut outs and the Ravens never had to go against any thing close to Rice/Montana

You should take yourself elsewhere with this ... What's the point of the link?

It's worthless. Total body of work, the Ravens defense was statistically better.

Not quite, see my other post...

Just look at the numbers.

Ravens didn't score a single offensive TD in over a month and they got themselves to SB.

Russell Wilson has 52 TDs in two seasons lol. Ravens might of went 19-0 if their QB had that production in 2000.

The Ravens D forced 5 turnovers and didn't give up any points and had a worse offense than the 14 Seahawks.

RavensD>Seahawks D.

It's funny how people will quickly look at numbers or stats to compare defenses when there are different periods we are comparing, but when it comes to other stats they are irrelevant.  Regardless, if the Ravens defense isn't the best, they are sitting at the grown ups table sipping liquor.  Anyway, I'd also like to point out that both the Steelers and Bears offenses were better than ours.  It wasn't like the defense was playing with big leads and got to play real loose.  That should count for something.

Ok, I was one that was definitely cheering for the Seahawks to win the Super Bowl and I am glad that they did in such an awesome fashion defensively.  However, I am getting so sick and tired of seeing something about them on television every few seconds.  Enough already with this Seahawks love fest!  Damn!  I could be wrong....but I don't remember the Ravens getting this much around the clock attention after they won it all a season ago.  It's getting sickening!  SMH!!

Back on topic: Ravens 2000 defense > Seahawks 2014 defense
