The hot new debate '00 Ravens or '14 Seahawks defenses

47 posts in this topic

Ok so since Sunday all I've been hearing is how Seattles defense is better than the 00 Ravens.

BS. They had a great game but lets look at the numbers.

2014 Seahawks

Total Yards-4378

Total Points-231

Rushing Yds-1626

Rushing TD-4

Rushing YPC- 3.9

Passing Yds-2752

Passing TD- 16

Int-28

00 Ravens

Total Yds- 3961

Total Points- 165

Rushing YDS- 970

Rushing TD-5

Rushing YPC- 2.7

Passing Yds- 2997

Passing TD- 11

PInt- 23

The 2014 Seahawks gave up slightly fewer passing yards, but more TD and 5 more interceptions. However, the Ravens held opponents to less than rushing 1000 yds on the season.

If you wanna compare playoff runs...

The Ravens defense allowed a TOTAL of 22 points, including only 1 defensive TD against in the 2000 SB run.

The Seahawks allowed 40 total points and 5 defensive TD against while playing 1 less game this year.

Ravens allowed 152 total yds and 0 points defensively in their SB game.

Seahawks allowed 306 total yds and 8 points against, including 34 completions for Manning.

Yes the Seahawks played Manning in their game. But its not like hes never been shut down in a cold weather playoff game before. Proof?

2006 Divisional playoff in Baltimore-

Peyton Manning- 15 of 30 161yds 0td 2int

So in summary, yes the Seahawks had on hell of a game. Congrats to them, they and their fans deserve it and im glad they finally got one. But they are not even In the conversation of the greatest defenses ever. They are stout, agressive and very good just not on a historic level.

The Ravens win that matchup going away. Great stats but one you left out is forced fumbles. The Ravens forced - and recovered - 26 fumbles on that season. That's insane!

Raven's allowed 165, about 10 points a game. The Seahawks allowed 231 points, about 14.4 points a game.

At first glance, it looks like the Ravens have the advantage, but you have to look at the numbers in context. Teams score more points today, and you do have to take that into consideration. It's a passing league and a high scoring league.

In 2000, teams averaged roughly 320 points, about 20 a game.

In 2013, teams averaged roughly 361 points, about 22 a game.

So the 2000 Ravens allowed an average of 10 points a game when offenses averaged 20 points scored a game, and the 2013 Seahawks allowed an average of 14.4 points a game when offenses averaged 22 points a game.

The Ravens allowed about 51% of the average points scored. The Seahawks allowed 63.9% of the average points scored.

So yeah, the 2000 Ravens win convincingly.

Can't believe people are debating this. Not even close... 2006 defense was better IIRC.

However, they played great in the Super Bowl. One of the greatest performances, against one of the greatest, if not, #1 offense of all time.

They definitely deserve a lot of credit for that, but don't get ridiculous and start talking about that 2000 defense.

00 Ravens had an easier schedule in all fairness.

Yeah, they did in the regular season. They still decimated the good offenses they saw in the playoffs.

this is exactly what ive been looking for. I was behind the seahawks until I seen the averages, I was just too lazy to do the work myself.

Right on. In order to be fair to the Seahawks, you have to adjust for inflation. but even after adjusting for inflation, the Ravens D is better.

Seahawks still came pretty close though. They definitely have an argument for second best of all time.

being lazy again, could you compare them to the 06 d. Just read an article on football insiders that says the 06 d was the best d in the history of the league

I'm about to head to my next class, but I'll take a look later this evening and get back to you.

Off the top of my head, they might have been all around. They forced a lot of turnovers and got a ton of sacks. Don't know where they really ranked there or in points though. I'll work on it later.

Im pretty sure teams averaged like 10 points against us that year...hah thats rediculous. We wouldnt even need any offense we would just score once than completely constrict and suffocate the other teams.

That's pretty much what happened. We didn't score a TD for five straight weeks but won three of those games.

I remember being young and HATING watching the games because they were so boring with no type of offense just lots of 3 and outs haha but my Dad always used to say THATS RAVENS FOOTBALL SON!

We allowed 201 points, or 12.6 a game.

NFL offenses averaged 329.6 points, or 20.6 a game.

So, our 2006 defense allowed about 61.1% of the average points allowed.

So adjusting for inflation, the 2006 Ravens defense was better than the 2013 Seahawks. Didn't really remember just how dominant we were that season since that's when I first started watching, but damn, that D was dominant as anything.

Maybe but that sure didn't help that Offense...That Defense HAD to be the best and was the best of all time.

i started the year before, was only watching now and again and was big into high flying offenses and points so obviously my first team was the colts, and manning Inparticular, but as I learned more about nfl, it was the 2006 ravens d that made me fall in love with the sport and the ravens.

00 Ravens weren't the best defense of all time.

85 Bears? 76 Steelers?

No they don't, and why is it bias, when many non-Ravens fans feel the same way?

They don't feel that way at all. General consensus is 85 bears are the best defense ever and it's true. Most people dont even rank 00 ravens second haha

I said it before, I will say it again.

85 Bears and 76 Steelers are 1 and 2

Over the final eight games of ‘76, opponents averaged just 3.1 points a game against the Steel Curtain.

85 bears allowed just 10 points throughout the whole playoffs... (all in the SB, which they won)

And 15 years after the Bears played, when offenses actually scored more points, the Ravens allowed 23 points throughout the postseason and 7 of those were on a fluke KRTD. They held the Denver Broncos, who were a PHENOMENAL offense at the time, to just 3 points. They held the Titans to just 10. They held Rich Gannon and your beloved Raiders to 3 points. The Ravens allowed ZERO points on defense in the Superbowl. ZERO.

So........... where's your argument again?

Listen, I know a handful of steelers fans who agree with this.

But I hate ranking things? All these defenses were great, and when you factor in the fact that offenses didn't start booming until recently(1996 ish.....) it makes it hard.... The game has changed, and ranking is pointless.

Put Dan Marino in today's era. He'd destroy everyone. Hell, he did in a run first era. He'd be the definition of unstoppable.

If they had made it past the Colts, I'm pretty sure that team wins the SB.  I was so sick that they hold the Colts to 15 and still lose.  It's like the 13 offense traveled back in time to play that game.  I didn't take that loss well at all.  That defense was amazing.  Ray probably at the end of his prime, yet still highly productive, Suggs was still fresh, AD, prime Ed Reed and a young hungry Ngata.  That whole defense was STACKED.  I feel every player on that defense could've started on any team and even some of the back ups.

On topic, I don't think they are better than our 06 or 00 defense.  The only defense I MIGHT put ahead of ours... and it pains me to say this is...  Never mind, purple shades going on, we're the best.
