Terrell Suggs extended

286 posts in this topic

Very interesting that it is through 2018, but that sure does keep him a Raven for life. I thought for sure Ozzie would have lowered the cap number more to something like 5 or 6 to really save money. Happy either way, waiting for the press conference to begin.

The other alternative was to have him test the market.  I just couldn't bear to see him wearing number 55 on the Patriots, Steelers, or Bengals.

Thought it should have a new thread of its own...for a day :D

Next man up: Eugene & Pitta!

That is the same thing I thought when I first heard the news about Suggs.  One of them will surely get the franchise tag.

Not when considering keeping a top tier LT. Pitta can walk all day.

The loss of Pitta would be softened if we can draft a guy like Evans or Ebron.

The thing is we have so many issues on offense we need like two draft picks and pitta to make a dent.  and a center.

Come on ozzie

Again, agreed. But it would still suck to lose Pitta. I like him. I like the camaraderie that he and Joe have.

So far every questions from press is killing Sizzle.

What is up with that?

I know right? We just locked him up for 4 years and they were generally negative in questions about age and health and production.  I'll never understand the mentality of the media to tend to be so negative.

very happy to hear this. 4 year extension, ontop of the 1 year remaining from his old deal so in retrospect, its a 5 year deal. Raven for life. just the way he wanted. Cementing his Legacy even further, a great move from all aspects. allows some stability on the defensive side and allows the team to have more cap room to go after players for long term contracts. again great move.

I'd keep Ngata but we seriously need to get that cap figure down even if we need to renegotiate with him too.

I think it's unlikely he'd be willing to negotiate an extension. He's leaning more on retirement than Suggs was and he most likely wants to collect as much money as possible before he hangs em up.

4 years, $30M is a little more than I thought it would be, but I'm still happy it got done. Opens up a good amount of room this year.

So what is our cap now?  ~12mill free?

somewhere around 17-18 million I believe. we'll wait for further reports.

per rotoworld.com "while the team clears $4.6 million in much-needed cap room for 2014 "

so the Cap room is somewhere around 16 million. or so. I believe.

Well this eliminated one off-season need. If we didn't get this deal done, we would have needed to find a pass rusher. Now we don't and our pass rush is secure for the next several years with Sizzle and Doom at the helm.

That gives us some breathing room now, let's get the rest of the players done.

Per Albert Breer: "Ravens' reworked deal with Terrell Suggs is worth roughly $28 million over its 5 years, with $16 million fully guaranteed in first 2 years." "The $16M guarantee for Suggs is a win for the player. Generally, Ravens have done injury guarantees for vets. This one is a full guarantee."

Sizzle is back!

With Suggs done, I heard a radio discussion this morning that there is a chance the team may use the franchise tag on Arthur Jones once they've reached a deal with Pitta.

fyi,

The DT number is $9,182,000

Apparently there's triggers that help the cap number.

And Andrew Brandt of ESPN reports: "Suggs was to make $7.8M this year. Will now make $12M; $11M signing bonus + $1M salary. $4M 2015 salary guaranteed. $16M/2 yrs." "Suggs also has three non-guaranteed years, from 2016-2018, worth $21 million. At his age, that income fairly speculative."

So who knows what numbers to believe ... I'm sure they will come out at some point this afternoon.

I love that all the guaranteed money is in the first two years. That makes it an easy deal to work with later I think. In case we're forced to cut him later or in case he retires before the deal, we won't be in too bad shape.

Friendly to both sides. He gets a lot of guaranteed money, but we don't owe him anything guaranteed in the last two years of the deal.

I think those numbers are the same, just using different language.
