Gary Kubiak hired as Ravens Offensive Coordinator

275 posts in this topic

I apologize for being ignorant, but what do you mean by "vetted"?

check their history. Most people get vetted for ordinary jobs and it involves running police history. Obviously for nfl offence play caller jobs it wouldnt be a police check but u get the drift

who cares? Yeah he is a Raven all star but he aint on the Ravens right now. Same with Ray Lewis. We need to move on from what THEY think.

Yeah but I was hoping he would one day be a DB coach here. I'm pretty sure him and Kubiak didn't get along. As long as he's here I don't think Ed will want to. I don't even know if he has that desire at all though, so yeah.

Quick comparison of Cam Cameron's offenses vs Gary Kubiak's offenses in the NFL.  These stat lines are Year, Points Scored Ranking, Yards Ranking:

CAM CAMERON

2012 10 16
2011 12 15
2010 16 22

MIAMI (HC)
2007 26 28
SAN DIEGO (OC)
2006 1 4
2005 5 10

2003 10 7
2002 7 3
2001 10 22
2000 2 2
1999 18 14

Sorry if it's kind of hard to read.

Key points are that in terms of yards, Cam had 3 top 10 seasons in his career, which were 2004, 2005, and 2006 in San Diego, where his offenses ranked 10th, 10th, and 4th.  That's 3 out of 11 seasons, and only 1 in the top 5, best being 4th.  Top 10 in scoring 5 times.

Kubiak, on the other hand, had 13 top 10 ranked offenses out of 19 seasons.  That included two times having the #1 offense, a #2, an excellent FIVE times ranked 3rd, a 4th place offense, and two fifth place offenses, for a total of 11 top 5 offenses!  He only had 2 bottom half offenses out of 19 seasons.  His offenses were top 10 in scoring 14 out of 19 times!

I'm very happy looking at Kubiak's resume.

Edit:  Removed 2013 from Cam's resume, not sure how that slipped in there, but I didn't include it in what I discussed in my write-up, so nothing else changes.

I think an important question is, how will this hiring affect Pittas value to the Ravens?  Part of me thinks that since Kubiak was so successful with TEs in Houston that we can kind of just plug and chug and make no name TEs into key components, but the other part of me thinks that the sky is absolutely the limit now for Pitta, and that he could potentially be really dangerous for us.

If you ask me, Pitta just became an even bigger priority.

Loved what I saw and heard in that press conference. It really seems like they understand it's time to change. I really am excited to see what happens in the draft now because for once we might not be held back by the system.

Juan is actually the perfect teacher for what Kubiak wants to do. Looking back on things, promoting Castillo to OL coach was likely the writing on the wall for us to bring in an OC that utilized the zone blocking scheme. Castillo might just surprise some folks now. I am more than willing to give him a chance... not like we can do anything about it anyways.

I guess the decision for Hostler is for another day... but with Kubiak's experience as an OC, Hostler certainly wouldn't be as involved as he was with Caldwell (if he is still here)

Think we may draft a TE in the early rounds now? That would not be a surprise at all, considering Kubiak's offense is based heavily around TE usage.

This changes a lot imo. We now have a guy who knows how to use Juice. We are probably getting Winston to be a RT. Monroe is defiantly coming back. Pitta is still a toss up but I think we retain him. Still think we can't afford Jacoby.

So we got (as weapons)

Juice

Torrey

Brown

Pitta

Meaning We will probably do something along the lines of this

WR                                            TE - LT-LG-C-RG-RT                               WR

                                                                    QB

H-Back(Juice. Lines up as a blocker, slot WR, etc etc)

                                                                    RB

Most surprising is how lenient Kubiak was @ the conference.

3 things that was made clear on repeated questions:

1.  His going to do what Joe wants

2. His not bringing in a new OL coach

3. His going to lean on what Harb 'philosophy' is

It all depends on Pitta. And Juice. He's actually a perfect fit for this new offense. But I would think we should defiantly take a TE at some point, preferably someone who can block.

Looks good except that they liked the 2 TE set.....  Furstenburg comes in there somewhere.. or we draft..  and Dickson goes..

The H-Back will serve as a second TE esq thing. What they did with Casey a few years ago

Kubiak? Didn't see it coming. Won't even suggest that I saw it coming. still finding it hard to believe that it came.

That being said, I believe that this could be one of the most significant moves towards adding to the Ravens offensive culture, ever. Can't be sure. I just have a feeling.

went to bed thinking it was shanahan woke up to kubiak

Same here. I set my alarm to see if the OC had been announced and I was kinda surprised to see it was Kubiak. Won't complain though.

People around here idealize everyone in the organization.  The fact is people in the NFL are just people, they're just as flawed, catty, and horrible as the rest of us.  If you think it's all kittens and cookies behind the scenes, you're incredibly naive.  Especially with the egos you're dealing with in a league and a sport like this.

Everything is not rainbows and butterflies but Mike Preston is not gospel, either

Harbs used the word "change" about 15 times!!! That is refreshing to hear!!!

Well, so did Obama.

(though tbf changing a political landscape in just a little bit harder than changing an offensive unit :P )

I'm kind of shocked that Kubiak is our next OC cuz I thought John would be conservative about hiring outside of the organization.  However, Kubiak is the best OC available right now and he will make Joe "elite" in term of FF wise, but realistically is the success of the whole offense....
