Should extending Jimmy Smith and Torrey Smith be other priorities this offseason?

36 posts in this topic

Wow ladies and gents are we seriously considering letting Jimmy and Torrey walk?

For what? Who on this team is worth seeing one of your best corners and your best receiver walk?

I would rather start over at every other position on the field, then to let them walk.  Minus QB.

Haloti and Suggs and Ray Rice would have to be first.

Wouldn't hurt to negotiate with Torrey seeing as it's his last year but Jimmy has only did it one year out of three and he needs to do it again

Wouldn't extending Jimmy likely mean being forced to cut Webb? Not that I would be against that because Jimmy is clearly the better long-term investment at this point but it's just something to think about.

why would that mean we would have to cut Webb? that makes no sense, we just signed him to a huge contract a year or two ago, he is locked up until 2018, cutting him would have a gigantic cap hit, having to let Suggs go might happen, but Webb? no

We should have plenty of cap space in 2015 to at least get one if not both of the Smithses. However, money is going to be real tight if we try to keep this team together, so we have to have an expectation that some will not return.

Key Free Agents:

2014:

Eugene Monroe - top target of our 2014 free agency

Dennis Pitta - He might have to take a low-risk one year dal to rebuild his value, unles he gets the money he wants

Arthur Jones - He had a breakout year, but we have plenty of depth to cover his loss

Daryl Smith - He' past his 30s, but LBs can still play at a high level during that age, but he might get at most a 2 year deal

2015:

Jimmy Smith - He's turning into a shutdown corner that we drafted him to be, but that market value might be too much

Torrey Smith - I think we can afford Torrey Smith's contract around Antonio Brown's price ($8.392M per ear)

Pernell McPhee - He's in a contract year and is going to go all out to get consideration for a big contract

Tyrod Taylor - He's a back-up QB at this point, but does he want to start somewhere?

Chykie Brown - He turned out to be a serviceable cornerback

Justin Tucker (RFA) - He's probably going to get a 2nd rounder, cause teams don't throw 2nd rounders at kickers these days

2016:

Marshal Yanda - He will be 32 by then, but All-Pro guards can play well into their 30s

Kelechi Osemele - We all saw a glimpse of his dominance and could force us to choose him over Yanda due to age

Justin Tucker - If he gets a tender in 2015

Bernard Pierce - I doubt he gets a big contract due to his injury-proness

Courtney Upshaw - He's been a serviceable Run defender, since he doesn't really get so many sacks, he could come cheap

Haloti Ngata - I doubt we extend Ngata's contract due to his age and declie

Jimmy yes, Torrey no. It is rare to get a corner of Jimmy caliber and potential (top ten potential, top 12-15 currently). Torrey isn't even a true #1 wr. He's not a true #2 either however. Jimmy will become a franchise cornerstone for our defense, while Torrey will be a good, not great player, nothing against him, but his a one trick pony. You got to pair torrey with a more physical wr that will run the inside route for him to be effective.

Jimmy Smith is a really good corner with size... maybe not this year but sometime down the road. Torrey Smith will definitely be a raven for life.

Jimmy Smith emerged as a great CB this season and is poised to continue to get better

he will be a FA following this coming season, if he puts up another season like the one he just put up, he may be too expensive after next season

so, should we lock him up now? or wait and take our chances after next season

Torrey Smith has become our #1 receiver this season eclipsing 1100 yards, the second most yards in a single season in Ravens history, and the first Raven receiver to break 1000 yards since Mason in 2009

he is set to make a big contract after next season, especially if he puts up big numbers again

Extending both could pay off or be horrible moves, there is obviously some risk involved. Paying them now will mean that we wont be able to hang on to as many players because of cap, we may have to say good bye to a few more players than we want to, but I think it would pay off long term to go ahead and extend these guys while they won't cost insane money, waiting also involves big risk if these two mimic their success from this season

I understand that we already have our back against the cap at the moment and we still need to resign a couple players, but as I see it - the only absolutely must sign player is Monroe.

Pitta and Jones will be sorely missed, but letting them walk won't make as big an impact as letting Monroe walk. People say that we don't do enough to help Flacco out, resigning Torrey would be huge for Flacco. And locking Jimmy up will greatly enhance our secondary for years to come, in my opinion, there is more risk with extending Jimmy than Torrey, but I think Jimmy will continue his great play and this year wasn't just a fluke.

I  have a feeling if Torrey doesnt sign for no. 2 moneythen he's going to walk and get overpaid somewhere else. He's like in the middle of a no. 1 and no.2 reciever its hard to explain. It would be a shame because everyone loves Torrey. I really hope we lock him up for the long run. And for Jimmy, I would love to resign him. It would take some dancing around the cap and we still really dont know what kind of player he is yet. This past season was his only good one. Also im not sure how Ozzie feels about having 2 corners with big contracts. They have had a lot of succes with no name free agent corners so who knows.
