Anyone's kid afraid of losing teeth?

17 posts in this topic

My son is terrified of losing his teeth. He lost his second tooth tonight, and he had a meltdown for about 10 minutes. It came complete with him screaming at my husband, "put it back in my mouth! Please, daddy!!" He did the same thing when he lost the first one. Does/Did anyone else's kid have this type of problem? He didn't want his first tooth underneath his pillow because he didn't want the Tooth Fairy to take his tooth. Now with his second tooth, he told me he wants to stay awake and make sure the Tooth Fairy doesn't come steal this one (because he thinks my husband can magically make it fit back into his mouth).

Lol!

When I was a kid I used to love losing my teeth. I remember chewing a 100 grand candy bar and losing two at the same time. I've probably lost 5 all together because of that lol.

But yeah I don't have kids so I can't help ya. I would just tell him that it magically comes back over time when you accept the tooth fairies generous donation!

I was the same way! I literally pulled my own tooth out once because I was tired of it being so loose. Michael, on the other hand, refused to eat his lunch last week at school because he didn't want his tooth falling out. We've tried bribery, yes we sometimes bribe our boys. I told him that if he put his tooth under the pillow, the Tooth Fairy would probably give him more money for this tooth because she wants it more. :) Nothing. I might as well have told him that in German.

That was me as a kid.  I was scared of them falling out and it got so bad sometimes that the dentist would pull them out.  A majority of my teeth were lost this way.

I think that fear is pretty common. You can probably find lots of videos of kids melting down over a lost tooth. I saw it happen in a restaurant once and the screams were ear-shattering.

I was more afraid that I would choke on it in my sleep. That's why I wanted it out. Plus I thought it looked cool ha

If you or any other parent wanted to go the fear route (aka the "my sister's cousin's dog's aunt's best friend's brother had THIS happen" horror story), I have two really awesome baby teeth complications stories for you. Both would likely convince him that it's perfectly okay for a loose tooth to come out before bad stuff happens.

My niece is terrified of the "tooth fairy" coming into her room and coming near her ,she won't even sleep in the bed if the tooth is under her pillow. I think both fears are very real and very common .

So, we caved in. We told him he could keep the tooth, and if at any time he was ready to let it go, I'm sure the Tooth Fairy would come collect it. It was either that or having a kid walk up and down the hallway at 3:00 in the morning because he wasn't going to sleep. So now we have this little tooth just sitting there in a Ziploc bag until we find out what else to do with it. Parents of the year, I know.

My mom still has some of my baby teeth. Why, I have no clue, but whatever. And given the choice between keeping old teeth around or making sure he actually sleeps? Yeah, totally not weird.

I believe that I still got all my daughter's stashed in a few cupboards/boxes/whatever places she can't reach, not even the tooth fairy could find them now lol

Whatever works lol. My now 21 yo had a tooth so loose we were afraid to put him to bed, we were at my parents place in Deep Creek, and it was my hubby,me and my dad up around MN and we tried applies, caramel, numbing the gum with whiskey *gasp like they did in the olden days when I was little*, we were going to try the string around the tooth and he bit my husband and the tooth came out FINALLY, and the tooth fairly only had a 20 and the kid would try to pull the loose teeth after that lol. My youngest would save his for when he wanted money, he found 2 last week in his dresser-- he actually cleaned his room I'm waiting for the end of time with that move-- I know the last time I did it he was 13 or 14 so it's been a good 4 or 5 years! He never bought into the tooth fairey I guess being the youngest of 3 boys.
They don't give you an owners manual or I guess DVD now a days with kids, you do your best and pray you don't mess them up too bad. I guess we have that to look forward too with the soon to be 4 yo yippee

I have a different story for you guys, my son is quite comfortable with extracting his own teeth. It may sound bit unorthodox, but it is pretty straight forward to him :bitenails:
