[News] Coaching Search Rumor Mill

2,161 posts in this topic

We've had a lot of success in the last 6 years. Could've had more, maybe . Why can't it be enough? It's beneficial promoting from within....if they're a good coach. (Which they all were). The chemistry and familiarity with the players, system, coaches and FO, and motivation it gives every coach of ours. Hostler, IMO, is simply not a good coach (from what I've heard and read up on). So it's great that we're looking outside.

With a brand new staff comes a lot of changes and if this all happens I won't expect immediate results. Hopefully it all clicks but we just won't know.

Doesn't he run the west coast offense? Neither are precise route runners and that's a huge piece of the west coast offense. Hoping for Marquise Lee

Yes he does but the WCO isn't the same as when Jerry Rice was in it. If you look at his system it's a mixature of a few different offense. I made that statement because a lot of that offense works off the play actions and gets guys in space. I think a guy like Kubes would do a much better job moving them around and getting them in space more then our pervious system. But Lee is one of my favorites. He reminds me of Derrick Mason a lot.

Kubiak's ability as a playcaller is concerning for me as well. He's a slave to the playaction pass and I have seen the Ravens do the same thing over and over again (run, run, pass, punt) for far too long. It's a bit unfair to compare Kubiak to Cam, but it still doesn't change the fact, that the Texans weren't exactly known as a very dynamic offensive team.

Since 2006 (Kubiak's span as the head coach for Houston), Houston has cumulatively ranked 8th in yards per offensive play, while the Ravens are 28th, with only Cleveland, St Louis, the Jets, and Kansas City ranked worse.  Houston has averaged more than half a yard per play better than the Ravens.  And in my opinion, we have had the superior roster.

i was just about to post that i think that makes alot of sense! and the reports are harbs wanted this not Steve or Ozzie!

That would ease my mind a little. Harbs is one season removed from being a SB champion and missed the playoffs for the first time in his carreer and then just barely. I think it would make the Ravens look like a dysfunctional organisation, if the FO would turn on John this sudden.

I just read a really good point. If history tells us something, it's that the Ravens have great success when hiring former Texans.

Aaron Wilson

@RavensInsider: Just talked with Eric Winston, former Texans tackle, he called it an "absolute home run" for Ravens to hire Gary Kubiak as OC

What is your definition of 'dynamic'? The Texans ranked in the top five on offense three times and in the top half on offense seven times. That's not even counting that Kubiak's offense never finished below top seven when he was in Denver. That's more success than we have ever had on offense and definitely better than what we had this past season.

The way I hear it they are trying to get Kubiak, Shanahan , and Dennison al three at the same time but the K man O.C. Huh man/ sounds good if we could get all three.

Their OL was better than ours for a long time, imho. Arian Foster is in my opinion a superior RB to Rice (still pretty good, though) and we never had a WR of Andre Johnsons caliber on our roster. Flacco is way better than Schaub and that means alot, but apart of QB and maybe TE, the Texans probably had the better roster.

Well, Kubiak's other option were the Browns, so it wasn't that hard of a decision to make for Gary. :P

I don't think the Fo has turn on John

This would be my guess.

Castillo would be a good fit for Kubiak's offense as well. The Texans were running ZBS very well for a long time.

That damn Preston should be writting Harlequin Romance novels, not reports. -_-

Excellent point, agreed. I don't believe that at all. Mike Preston is just doing what he does and some media outlets take it and run.

My only concern in duration of this process is that Shanahan is going to get disenchanted and grab another available slot - we then somehow whiff on Kubiak and are left holding the bag ... with no other option than to promote Hostler.

As they say way down south .... Git er done!

Not to mention that he was the OC on their back to back championship teams....I am all for this....Harbaugh's buddy system has worn out it's welcome and no they will not become the Cowboys....Comparing Jerry Jones and Steve Bisciotti  is like comparing lemons to cherries.

Steve Bisciotti is no Jerry Jones. He knows to trust the personal he hired.

John's "buddy system" is a fabrication by the Ravens fanbase. Every coach brings in coaches, he is familiar with. Just look at what Gary Kubiak is doing and he is just the OC. And for now John's way resulted in 3 AFCCG appearence and a SB, which is something Kubiak hasn't done as a HC, right?

BTW, Kubiak's Texans do run ZBS. Do you think, that doesn't make Kubiak a good fit for Castillo. Sounds like Harbaugh is getting his way.

I would agree that Foster is better than Rice, and that Johnson is better than any of our various #1 receivers over the years (Mason / Boldin / Smith).  But in my opinion, it's still rather close, and before Foster broke out in 2010, we had already had a lot of success with Rice in 2009, McClain in 2008, McGahee in 2007, and Jamal Lewis in 2006.  And Foster missed somewhere around a dozen games due to injuries, whereas we haven't had our RBs really miss any games due to injury in that entire 8 season span.  As far as receivers, Johnson has also missed 19 games in that span, where as Mason, Boldin, and Smith have collectively missed a combined 3 games between them during their times with us, and we had 3 seasons where at least 2 of them were on the roster simultaneously.  How many good receivers have the Texans had next to Foster over the years?

Offense line, though, I can certainly concede that one, they probably had a much better line, and that makes a big difference.

The Given - We will alter/change/rebuild our offense this off season, starting with our line, whether we go younger in the draft or in FA i think that has alot to do with who we pick as OC and if the player can adapt to, or is already familiar with zoneblocking.

we as fans also have to get use to this zone blocking scheme we started with. If the proper pieces are put together such as coaching staff and roster personnel i believe we will be way better off then this last year.

Uncertainty - Do we fix the offense in FA or in the draft? Who will be our next OC or group of Offensive coaches?

I honestly dont see alot of our fixes being in the draft, just because i think the first pick or 2 will be on the opposite side of the ball. We have prided our team on the defensive side of the ball for so long, that I believe if a free safety such as HaHa Clinton-Dix or Calvin Pryor is available at 16, I think our staff will be likely to draft one with the first round pick, Hoping to find the next ed reed. obviously we havent found the answer at FS in our roster yet so im just being realistic on the chance one is available we will draft them. I know you can find decent OLmen in the second and third round, but they would be leaned more towards starting in the future and not right away (anything is possible though).

However their is enough options in FA to work with the cap, and snag a big name or two there. Whether that is WR's/TE/OL it all is still fuzzy future, due to us still needing to find the OC.

in a perfect world id like all 3 couches to come along, especially since they all have something to prove after last seasons fail by their old teams offenses. now who do i want to call the plays is still up in the air.

He should. Or else he should look at himself for extending Harbaugh twice and making him one of the highest paid coaches in the league - if he is just a 'figurehead'. The Harbaugh bashing is sometimes unbelieveable and some of the buddy rhetoric makes you wonder if people realize what they say... I bet if Kubiak/Dennison/Shanahan doesn't work out, he'll be accused of being John Harbaugh's buddy, too, a few years down the road.

Same thing with the 'doghouse' crap.

Again, I don't believe any of it.

Here's my favorite quote from the comment section....

rickastleydancemoves says: "Me being a Texans fan, let me tell Raven fans what to expect: Run on first down, run on second down. If it’s third and short, play action bootleg to Torrey Smith. If its third and long, draw with Ray Rice."

Bottomline, I'll still prefer Shanahan as our OC, cause he's the better playcaller and he scheme to get his receivers open. But I'll take Kubiak, cause he's probably the best option left outside of Shanahan's. Plus we still will be getting a dynamic playbook with Kubiak and he's also knows how to play to his players strength as well. It's just his playcalling that's suspect. Plus his health could be an issues too. But still, Kubiak is an offensive mastermind and we need him or Kyle as our OC if we want a shot at a explosive offensive.

Do you have any proof at all regarding these "obvious facts"? Or proof that this is Biscotti, not Harbaugh?

Didn't think so.

Didn't anticipate Kubiak being interested in an OC job, but he'd more than acceptable.

The part that makes no sense is Shanahan coming along for the ride.

Weird

My thinking is if Kubiak does well here in one year he'll get a HC job somewhere, then Shanahan will just continue on with the offense as the OC.  Shanahan didn't get many looks for an OC job out there this year so this is his next best shot.

If these guys don't work out, I don't know if Harbaugh will be around much after that anyways. Preston aside, everyone heard Bisciotti say that he will only be so patient. We don't make the playoffs next year, serious things will probably happen.

With all that said, I don't know why people think (not you, just in general) that having input from an owner or GM is such a bad thing. Who knows what happened behind closed doors. It could have been a complete Harbaugh decision. It could have been a decision made when Newsome put a little more stress on it. No one will ever know besides the parties involved. But I hope Harbaugh didn't make the decision all on his own. I hope he asked for input, because there is nothing wrong with that.

Weird

They both had alot of success together and they both end up joining a very successfull team without QB problems and with a championship pedigree on top of that. That's a pretty good way to get an opportunity for a HC job fast. Winning the SB wouldn't hurt either.
