DB coach Teryl Austin now Detriot Lions DC

The greatest example was the Bungles game. Our D held it's own, did what we've been asking of it and once again 3 and outs by our O. I think Pees did a good job with a D that was one gassed , and frustration setting in from or O not producing all year. You can only hold an O like the Bungles (talent wise) for so long somethings gonna give...unfortunately our D was it.

yup!

2013 season is all on the offense problem; I never once think defense are the problem.  Pees is good in my mind.

All we need is an OC who can move the ball when needed to, get us more first downs, and consistently score in the redzone.   That is my Christmas wish list if anyone asks me.....

Sometimes Pees' play calling baffles me, but the fact that our defense didn't struggle mightily after all of the losses last post season, I think the man deserve at least a bit of credit.

I think the main things that hampered our defense were:

  • The offense not being able to stay on the field consistently.  Numerous 3 and outs in a row in almost every game, as well as giving up far too many turnovers putting our defense in bad field position and often right after they got off the field
  • Boneheaded play calling as well as sometimes playing it far too safe (only rushing 3 or 4 towards the end of the games when we were winning)

Yea the point of my threat wasn't to blast pees or blame him... I even would go as far as to say I like the guy.

He help bring us a super bowl and im grateful for that... and the job he did that year with all the injuries was nothing short of miraculous.

But he isn't the guy to take our D to the next level - hes not going to dominate and win us games single-handed. He wont lose us many games which there is a lot to be said for, but I personally prefer a coordinator whos willing to let the dbs get up on the line and be aggressive with the pass rush. We didn't hit QBs enough or caused enough turnovers the past 2 years. Of course some of that is squarely personnel, but some of it simply comes down to not attacking enough.

We certainly don't need a change, but I think we can get similar results that we're getting from pees from any number of guys.

Id personally prefer that if theres a possibility we lose Austin, id rather take a gamble on him and give him the job to keep him.

No offense, but that's a myth. In most cases this year, we actually led in time of possession going into the 4th quarter. There was a pretty decent conversation about it in the Mythbusters thread.

Yeah our problem was not moving the ball, really, it was that we were second to last in red zone touchdown percentage.  In 2012 we were like 6th in that category.  I think that's where we actually felt the bit of not having Q and Pitta the most, coupled with no run game - we just could not punch the ball in when we got down there.

Don't forget the fact that our "offense" gets off the field after 3 downs leaving the defense gassed.....

Pees is "average". I'll give him blame when I'm mad, but overall he's not terrible. We can live with him.

Its funny how we had so many new players on D, yet they were among the best in the league...andpeople still call for Pees' head.

I agree with you, some of our young guys going for knockout hits over form tackles lead to a few game changing plays this year.

The offense had a chance to burn clock and get out of a few of those games and they failed. But people blame the defense for those losses. No, its called score some more freaking points and be able to convert a 3rd or 4th and 1 when you need it.. being able to do just those things alone would have put us in the playoffs

4th quarter meltdowns along with us losing to every good offense we played this season.  I don't know what else you need.

I can call our defense and who's coming on blitzes just about every game.

I agree that these things need to be fixed, yet it doesn't really help when your QB turns the ball over 24 times.

While the offense needs the most tweaking, the inability of the defense to get off the field late cost us in losses against Green Bay, Pittsburgh (1st meeting), Cleveland (2nd meeting), and to Chicago, to name the most obvious.

In none of those games, however, did the unit surrender over 24 points, which overall is not bad. Therefore it is a most peculiar issue, and one that will not be fixed easily.

Webby?  He was a shell of his former self this year. Not blaming Austin, just sayin'.

He seemed a bit rusty early in the year, but he came on in the second half of the season, when he caught both of his interceptions.

Don't think he can.   I think coach Austin's contract dictate he can't get a job elsewhere unless its a HC job

That would be the weirdest thing I've ever heard. Makes no sense!

If he still has any years on his contract the Ravens can deny Caldwell from taking him. The only way he can leave is for HC or if his contact expires

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Ravens have allowed Teryl Austin to interview for the Detroit Lions job, so any clauses in the contract would be void? The Ravens could terminate his contract to let Jim Caldwell have him.

I wouldn't be too worried about finding a replacement. The Ravens had Chuck Pagano, then Teryl Austin. I'm sure the next guy that comes along will be just as strong as those two. Hopefully he brings an aggressive mentality because I love seeing our defensive backs getting physical and dictating what the other receivers do. I realize Pees plays a part in that with his play call, but the defensive backs coach can give input, right?

On a side note, all of those complaining that the offense was to blame with all of the three and outs, the Ravens actually had an average TOP of 30:21, so the offense usually had the ball longer, even if it were slightly. In most games, the Ravens were leading in TOP prior to the fourth quarter. This is all happening with the Ravens having the seventh shortest time between snaps. Find someone else to blame.

They'd definitely void his contract if they allow an interview. Imagine the hurt feelings if they went back on their word,

Aaron Wilson said earlier today that they had. I can't imagine them not wanting him to advance

nuthin' like the old Webb.  But I'm confident he'll be back in form next season.

The Db's have looked good since hiring Austin.  He turned our first round CB selection into a beast.

He also got Webby back up to speed after major surgery.  I can't think of one player that has looked terrible in the secondary.

Austin for DC

Absolutely!  I feel the same way!  Sign the man up as our D.C.

Still lots of teams looking to hire;  Lots of coordinator positions around..  Lots of coordinators too.  Time to let the F.O.'s do their jobs.....  Let the chips fall where they fall.  :/

yeah but the more we don't know about, the more nervous we are....What we don't know most about is what Ozzie and FO are doing.....

Like Bisciotti once said that he is a fan too but the difference is that he can call Ozzie and John and ask what's going on......

Waiting sucks.....

When points don't decide games and having a good scoring defense isn't a good thing. Duh.

Now, let's get this on topic.

Considering the Offense couldn't get going and were unable to stay on the field long enough for our guys to get their breath... Injuries anyone???  and the fact that by 4th quarter they all were gassed...  Come on...

That has little to do with his vanilla play calling.  Gassed or not. I have seen plays, where receivers were running wide open in our secondary.

Its his job to put players in position to make plays.

Okay back on topic, losing a great coach like Austin will show up in Pees defense. Mark my words.  If you don't wanna promote your best coaches you are going backwards as an organization.

If he wanted to leave for the same position elsewhere I'd understand but never have I seen an organization stand in the way of an  advancement.
