Jim Caldwell takes Detriot Lions head coaching job

I am amazed and confused by this post. I honestly can't tell if it's serious.

He has only been a Wide Receivers Coach for the Baltimore Ravens. Prior to that, he was the Offensive Coordinator for the 49ers, not a position coach, and prior to that he was the Quarterbacks Coach (not the WR Coach) for the Chiefs. So his entire career as a WR position coach is with the Baltimore Ravens, and you're going to tell me that he "every receiver corps he has ever worked with" (which would be the Ravens receivers from 2008 through 2013) has been at the "top of the league"? It just doesn't even make sense. What metric are you even using to rank the teams' receiver corps? What under achievers did he take from "low 20s ranking" to a "top single digit ranking"? What receiver has he EVER coached to a top single digit ranking as a wide receiver for a given season? Not Mason, not Boldin, not Smith, certainly not Jones...

Nobody considered any of them top 10 receivers during their time with the Ravens. Boldin WAS a top 10 receiver in Arizona, and actually diminished in his performance while under Hostler, and then re-emerged again with San Francisco while no longer under Hostler. There is not one iota of evidence to back up the claims that he is the best wide receiver coach in the NFL, and plenty to suggest he might be the worst.

This year, our #1 receiver in Torrey Smith ranked 32nd in catches among Wide Receivers.
Last year, Boldin was our #1, and he ranked 25th in catches among Wide Receivers.
2011, Boldin #1, ranked 33rd among WRs.
2010, Boldin, ranked 29th.
2009, Mason, ranked 16th.
2008, Mason, ranked 14th.

But hey, in 2009, with Arizona, Boldin was top 10! He ranked 9th. This year, he ranked 14th. His best year with us, he was 25th, but the years before and after us he was 9th and 14th.

Mason, in 2007, before Hostler arrived, ranked 4th!

Our receivers have been catching fewer balls since he arrived, our #1s are dropping down in the rankings seemingly each successive year that he coaches them. He takes Mason from 4th before him to 14th with him, then 16th, then 30th before he is cut from our team. He takes Boldin from 9th before him to 29th with him, then 33rd, then 25th, then after he leaves, he goes back up to 14th, a level he never came close to when he was with us.

I could get into completion percentage of targets for our receivers, but it's a much more in depth analysis. But here's a hint: Torrey Smith was under 50% and the worst in the NFL this season.

Where is there any evidence at all that Hostler is helping these receivers be better players? Our receivers don't get consistent separation, they don't come back for the ball, they don't extend for the ball, they don't track the ball effectively... what HAS he taught them to do well?

+1
I've been saying this for 3 years!!!!

I feel kinda ungrateful saying this since Jim Caldwell was the OC when we won the Superbowl but I am not at all disappointed to see him leaving Baltimore.

He did a solid job when he took over mid-season and called the plays that Cam Cameron had left behind but I always had a suspicion that things would take a turn for the worse once he was given full control of the offense and was allowed to add his own wrinkles. I feel like he turned our offense into a reflection of his own personality - dull and boring. I will concede that he was hindered by the mess Juan Castillo made of our offensive line, which totally destroyed our running game, but even allowing for that, I still felt the playcalling this year was predictable and unimaginative.

Jim, thanks for playing your part in sending Ray Lewis out on top and bringing the Lombardi back to Baltimore.

Hopefully we can now get ourselves an OC who doesn't believe in running the ball from the shotgun formation and who uses the run to open up the passing game instead of vice versa. It would also be nice if the new OC had enough imagination when it comes to the passing game that we once more become an interesting offense to watch.

Caldwell just took Bill Lazor(Foles QB coach) as OC to the lions.

Hmm, NFL.com says he's now the Dolphins OC...

Harbs wouldn't have fired him if he didn't get detroit job, no?

Read into all you like, but it sounds like a company line to me. Maybe they would have kept him. Its impossible to know for sure.

Of course not. Harbaugh loves his mediocre playcallers.

Lions fans are so pissed with this hiring....

Seems like half and half.

There's people that flatout hates Jim b/c his not their #1 candidate. Some people seem like they are willing to give Jim a chance b/c he has all the check marks to fit into lions regime.

I think Caldwell is a better coach than Scwartz is. Few of you want to blow up Jim here and make him a scapegoat but its incredibly unfair imho.

Now I'm rooting for Caldwell to have success there. I wouldn't bet on it but i hope he proves em wrong.

It is disturbing to me how much bashing of Jim Caldwell is going on. Jim Caldwell took a team to a super bowl and I don't care if he had one of the greatest quarterbacks in Peyton Manning and other great players, it is still a tough job as a coach to get a team to the Super Bowl. It did not work out for him as an offensive coordinator this past year but I hardly think he was the main problem, there was too much that went wrong with the Raven this past year and it mostly boils down to the Olinemen not executing. Jim Caldwell did some spectacular things for the Ravens last postseason to help us win the Superbowl and I think his play calling then was very under appreciated. He called the plays we needed at the right time, which helped us win. The reason he has worked for so many successful franchises over the years is clearly because he is a highly respected man who honestly deserves way better from fan bases. He will do a great job and some Detroit Lions fans should be ashamed of what they have said before even giving Caldwell a chance. Watching his introductory press conference it is clear he has a plan in place to help the Lions succeed and he is going to put his best effort with the Lions, and if his best effort to this day has been getting to the Superbowl, I'd be pretty excited if I was a Lions fan. Good Luck Jim Caldwell!

You need to post this in the Lions forum cuz they don't know what a good coach they get....

Caldwell is one of the best QB coach; without him, Joe wouldn't be so aware in the pocket and making quick decision with the ball.

He might be not the best OC but he is the best QB coach and a legit HC too.....

In short, he got my respect....

Moeller is in contact with Caldwell, but the Lions had expected to retain their previous offensive line coach, per Aaron Wilson. Moeller may not be going to Detroit.

There's no way we'd get mistaken with the 2007 Patriots if he stuck around, but I do think he's getting a lot more hate than he deserves. I don't know if I hope he succeeds at the Lions after how they've mostly been reacting. Be nice to see him do well I guess, and that can override whether the Lions deserve any big-time success.

I wonder if they'll be taking on a "run game co-ordinator".

I like how Harbaugh stays classy even when he probably lying . I dont think for one second that Harbaugh was going to keep Caldwell maybe as quarterback coach but not at offensive coordintor.
