Jim Caldwell takes Detriot Lions head coaching job

195 posts in this topic

Just don't promote from within. After the fall that our offense took this season, we just need a fresh start with a new offensive mind in the fold. Jim Hostler would make no sense especially since his last stint as OC was a complete and total disaster.

I'd be all for Ben McAdoo, Rob Chudzinski, and especially Norv Turner if he gets out of his contract with Cleveland.

Anyone think Brad Childress may be on the radar--he is in KC right now with a weird role. Not sure how I feel about it but the connections may make it possible

Hostler was a disaster of an OC in SF. It's certainly possible he could have learned since then, but but I really want to get some new ideas in here.

Let's see who will be the scape goat OC this year if Flacco and the Offense struggle due to the line and poor decision making

Yep, there are no more excuses outside of poor personnel (players), and poor decision making left now, if the offense looks the same next year. Go get a legit #1/ #2 WR (draft or FA), shore up the o-line. No more excuses. I'm kinda excited for the offense. This could be a boon for us. Being shaken up and startled a bit can do wonders sometimes. I hope that's the case for this offense. Changes are coming, and some players have been put on notice(via respectful comments by the owner) that poor play a second time around will not stand.

I agree. Are we really gonna promote from within after our offensive performance this year?

I think at the very least they need to do their due diligence and look at options, but who knows.

Yeah baby. He did a great job in our postseason run and I'll forever be grateful for that. I wish him the best.

Before the start of this season I thought he would get a HC gig. Midway through I thought we'd be stuck with him. I'm surprised but also relieved. Although it wasn't all his fault for our struggles he was still a part of them. I want a new play book, system, language -- everything! lol

Hopefully we hire a new young guy. I would not be pleased if we promoted someone from within. I'd also like a QB coach again.

I feel you.....they keep talking about Hostler but I looked up the stats for the offense he ran in San Fran back in 2007 and guess what they were horrible......32 ranked out of 32, please we need an outsider, not in house

The big question is will Harbaugh hire someone that could potentially threaten his position as HC

or will he put one of his toadies in the OC postion even if it's from  outside the current coaching staff?

What ?

Jim is the new coach of the Lions we're about to see who the real problem was on this O-Line. John got a thing with his friends being on his coaching staff and I don't have a problem with that, if they're good but when they suck it's a problem. Hopefully he doesn't hire another friend.

I would like to have Norv Turner or Chudzinski but don't be surprised if a promotion to OC comes from within.

One thing to keep in mind about Hostler is that, according to Jeff Zrebiec of the Sun, he's very close with Torrey Smith and Joe Flacco. Could be good to have an OC that has chemistry with your franchise QB and top WR.

I honestly don't even understand how a team would hire him as a HC after the year our offense put in. Caldwell has very few of the intangibles it takes to be a HC in this league. I got a lot of respect for him as a person but I'm still scratching my head on how a team arrived at Caldwell as the best possible HC candidate available to them. It made perfect sense when Indy wanted Pagano, this one doesn'rt make any sense to me. I wanted a new OC anyway so this just makes things easier on us to not have to demote or possibly let go of Caldwell to bring in a new OC and start fresh.

I think a big part of it is because he has a proven track record with QBs. Stafford needs guidance if he is going to take the next step. Caldwell also has experience and has two SB rings as an assistant in addition to making another SB as a HC.

I'm not upset that he is gone because I just felt like we needed something fresh, but I think he did a lot of good things in his time in Baltimore and I really dont blame him for much of the offense's failure this past year.

What ?

I exaggerated the point about Harbaugh's  hires but Cam and Castillo make me feel like

he wants to hire his buddies (toadies ) even if they are not a good fit.

Trust me Bisciotti is gonna watch this one very closely and even though he doesn't get that involved,

he may here.

Well good luck in Detroit. Wont say anything bad about you... but please leave austin with us. You can take moeller and montgomery but leave the defensive coaches except pees alone.

My top 5 choices...

Philip Montgomery - Baylor Offensive Coordinator
Scott Milanovich - Toronto Argonaunts Head Coach
Bill Lazor - Philadelphia Eagles QB Coach
Mike Bloomgren - Stanford Cardinal "Andrew Luck Director Of Offense" (ugh... I'll call him OC)
Dan Roushar - New Orleans Saints Running Backs Coach

Every head coach  hires their buddies or should i say coaches they are familar with. You really not going to find a head coach with atleast some staff members he hasn't had ties with in the past. The Texans new head coach just litterally fired every body on their coaching staff in order to hired his guys or his buddies. The texans had some good staff members/coaches on their team  as well but the new head coach still fired them.

Gabe...  Some people selectively fail to remember that...  they believe he just isn't qualified, period.  The man has a very successful record.  His time here was so short, I'm not sure you could gage his complete success by looking at the Ravens.

Agreed. I think we saw a glimpse of what he could bring to the table during the playoffs last year...but when he went to install more of his offense this year, everything imploded around him, with injuries and bad play on the line, injuries to Rice and Pierce, and the injuries to Pitta and Jones.

I know we are all thinking NFL fired head coaches, OC's, QB coaches, but how about some college OC's who are successful?  I wonder if Philip Montgomery - Baylor, Kliff Kingsbury - Texas Tech (He is also HC so would make it difficult), Chad Morris - Clemson, Doug Nussmier - Bama are interested in making the jump?
