Ravens send message to Suggs (ESPN Article)

AND, I still maintain, that if Boldin had CHOSEN to stay, yeah, maybe the offense would have been better... and maybe not...  But we got Canty, Spears, Dumervil, D.Smith, and Huff... after losing the guys listed above, we needed them... Our Defense would have suffered immensely...   ON TOP of our offense.

Agree w/ the entire statement. One small caveat, with the money we wasted on Spears and Huff, we probably would have had enough under the cap to keep around Anquan. However, it happened, and I hate to flog a dead horse. But fans and players alike are definitely still salty about that one. Especially the way Q has played and continues to play for San Fran.

This is going to be both sides playing chicken. Who will win is based on who needs the other more. I think pre draft the ravens hold the cards, after it is sizzle.

I would like to keep him off course, but I would not throw a fit of he left either. The savings plus the coming increase in the salary cap will give us flexibility in the market for a marquee player at either his spot or another.

If anyone saw Suggs on Total Access tonight he was very coy when asked about his contract status. As if to say my cap hit is 12m and that's where it is staying. And really, why should he take a pay cut? That's his contract and that's what he deserves.

What happens if Flacco does this as well?

Based on Ozzie's stance, I'm all for Suggs testing the market!  Go see what other teams feel you'd be worth to their organization.

Nothings stopping any player from doing it when approached. Stage of one's career and position obviously would factor in. Suggs is an aging LBer heading into the final year of a deal. Even when Flacco's deal is up after 5 more years, he'll still have plenty of game left in him.

I only used Flacco as an example because he's in line to be next biggest hit after this year.  My theory is, you gave them the contract so the organization should bite the bullet and pay up.  If he decided not to restructure I couldn't be mad at him as a man.  I feel players should take whatever they can get, because at the end of the day, it's a business.  If a player exceeds his contract they don't redo it immediately, but the second they under perform they ask for the player to come back at a reduced rate.

As a fan I want them to do what's best for the team, but as a person I say take the game for what you can.

Honestly Suggs was awful last 8 games of the year vs run and pass. He even played against some of the worst tackles in the league during that period. He almost single handedly cost them the Bears game. In my opinion he is done. Waited to see if he needed offseason surgery for an injury as an explanation as an reason but havent heard he needs any.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- When I asked Baltimore Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome whether Terrell Suggs would definitely be back next season, it was like Newsome was speaking directly to the six-time Pro Bowl linebacker.

Here was the message: Suggs should consider a contract extension or he could end up on another team like Anquan Boldin.

Newsome's noncommittal response in regard to Suggs' future was the biggest headline to come from the "State of the Ravens" news conference Wednesday. The Ravens are going to play hardball with their players again, and Suggs shouldn't think this is a hollow threat. Not only did the Ravens trade Boldin last year, they also let safety Ed Reed -- the third-best player in team history -- go elsewhere because they refused to overpay for him.

suggs better not try Ozzie and take this 6.5 mill with incentives

True.

Fully agreed on the young pass rushers. I'm guessing we'll get a resolution before the draft but I'm looking forward to seeing if/when the team drafts a high-upside pass rusher. Obviously, the offense needs re-tooling but there really doesn't seem to be a quality pass rusher for the long-term. Upshaw is a run-stuffer, McPhee is still chasing his rookie form and while Simon has potential, he's still a question mark.

Do people not remember that we have Dumervil? I read the whole thread and not one person mentioned him, everyone just kept saying that Upshaw, McPhee and Simon won't be enough to replace him. If that were true, we wouldn't have enough to replace him but we have Dumervil. We can start Doom and Upshaw with Doom being our main pass rusher with Upshaw being the Jarrett Johnson type, and have McPhee create pressure from the D-line. And this will allow John Simon to get some time, as he could try to mold himself into a Paul Kruger type role for us next season.

Sure it would hurt to lose Suggs, but he was not worth the money that he was being payed last season and is on the wrong side of 30. We also have the personnel to replace him, and he would open a lot of cap space for a potential free agent C, FS, or WR as well as making sure we retain guys like Monroe, Pitta etc. If Suggs isn't willing to extend for less money, cutting him is best for the team.

Cutting Suggs would be bad in the short term, but the younger guys would get experience. Upshaw has looked good his first two years. Not a pass rusher but a damn good run defender. Simon is an effort guy, I like his attitude. Doom being here is what makes Suggs expendable imo. Doom was good for us before the injury. I'm not sure Suggs is worth $12 million a year at this point

If like to see an extension and and have him retire a Raven. I hate the business side of sports. I love watching Suggs and I don't want to see him go. It sounds like he might though. :(
