Who is Ozzie Newsome's mystery WR?

61 posts in this topic

I really think we need to draft a guy (and we will) so we can sort this receiver situation out long-term, but I think a veteran would be useful to come in as a stop-gap and compete with them over the season while they get used to the NFL (not to mention giving them the first-hand lesson that nothing comes for free), and even just serve as depth.

If we take a WR in FA, it'll be on a two-year contract at most. Ozzie will probably wait for at least a week after FA begins while the top shelf or two of guys gets overpaid. So that means no Eric Decker (thank god), no Jeremy Maclin, no Anquan Boldin, no Hakeem Nicks, no Andrew Hawkins and probably no Kenny Britt, Julian Edelman or James Jones. Someone will go unclaimed for a while and that'll push their price down.

Tbh, I think Ozzie would be more likely to sit tight and see who gets cut for cap reasons so we can hang onto those comp picks. That situation is obviously a bit more difficult to gauge. I know it's only a guess, but Spotrac has the following teams at having less than $4 million in cap space for 2014:

Cowboys (-$23 million  ), Steelers, Saints, Lions, Chargers, Patriots, Hawks, Rams, Chiefs, Titans and Cardinals.

Of those teams, I'd pick the Saints, Chargers, Titans, Lions and maybe the Steelers, Hawks and Patriots to start lightening the load from the offence based only on having a significant amount more on offence than defence. I can't see the Saints cutting a guy like Lance Moore or Marques Colston, but if it comes down to one of them OR Jimmy Graham then you never know. Malcolm Floyd could be an interesting one,and maybe Nate Burleson.

All I'm really doing is chucking names around that may or may not get a pink slip in the name of cap space. I think that kind of thing is pretty hard to predict, especially before FA even begins, and I don't think anyone foresaw the fax situation with Elvis Dumervil.

(I'm going to track down whoever introduced me to Spotrac and make them wear a Browns jersey for the next season)

Ravens wouldn't know what to do with a Julian Edelman, they'd have him running go routes wondering why he cant get open. I think we have the right weapons just need the Oline to work along with a OC who can get people in the right areas.

In an article posted here a few days ago that I must have missed it talked about Ozzie being confident he will get "his coveted WR"...but who exactly is that? Ozzie says he already knows who he wants and that they will be available over the next few months of the offseason. However Ozzie leaves specifics out of the equation.

It sounds to me like Ozzie has his mind set on a FA WR that he wants...but he could just be talking about Mike Evans or a potential draft choice he has his sights on...or maybe BOTH!!! :) Lord knows we need all the receivers we can afford.

So who could this coveted mystery WR be?

(as mentioned before, I think this was more of an idea of a WR than a WR that actually has a name and face. I dont think OZ would put his cards on the table this early and show who he may get in FA or the draft so teams can scheme on how to get that player first.

My guesses:

1. Julian Edelman: He had a career year posting 100/1000/6TD and could come at a cheaper price too. You might say the Patriots would want to retain him, but they have Danny Amendola with 4 years left under contract and up and comers Kenbrell Thompkins and Aaron Dobson. Julian Edelman would be a huge upgrade to our passing game and could be that weapon that oz was talking about who could move the chains and get some yards after the catch too. Edelman would be a great fit for us.

Although a proven short yardage guy in a spread offense, JE may look better than he actually is due to the fact he plays with Brady. I dont trust many Pats WRs since Tom has a tendancy to make his WRs look better than what they are and JE is a small slot guy and in our division he would have to worry about taking hits from the likes of Woodley, Troy, and Harrison. With his frame, that type of beating may drop his production. Id rather have a Jace Amaro in this case than JE

2. Miles Austin- The Cowboys are set to release Miles Austin this offseason, and if he is, Ozzie has another talented and cheaper option to consider. Austin is definitely a playmaker and a great all around WR...when he is healthy. But sometimes with injury prone players who have a lot of talent and potential, you have to take a shot on them.  Austin had a good year in 2012 and thats what you have to bank on, I feel like Miles Austin would definitely help out our team. The Patriots took a shot on Danny Amendola last year on a pretty big contract given his injury concerns...although amendola missed some games...he still finished with respectable stats and made some big catches against the Colts in the playoffs. And Austin would come some where around a 2 year contract not worth much.

As much of a solid player he is, the reason it seems the Cowboys may let him go is he may be showing signs of decline and they have his future replacement in the speedster Terrence Williams. If he were an option, I would not be surprised if it ended the same way it did with TJ. A lot of energy in the start but slowly decline at the end.

3. Big name WR- Dont be surprised if Ozzie does go after someone like Hakeem Nicks or Eric Decker.

That would all depend on what they do with Suggs contract and how they handle their Oline in FA. But only so much money to go around to fix the Ravens offense. I think OZ may pick up so Olinemen this offseason so a really big name may not be in the cards unless their in the trenches.

4. Rookie WR- All in all I believe Ozzie will sign a free agent receiver  AND draft one. But in the situation where ozzie doesnt make too big of a splash in FA there are a lot of good WRs in the draft. I like Mike Evans with our 1st rounder, or maybe BeckhamJR with the 2nd rounder.

The one thing OZ is good at doing is misdirection. How many times have we thought OZ was for sure gonna pick this guy or that guy in the draft, only to go in a completely different direction, which in the end still works for our team down the road. Dont be surprised if OZ gets a Linemen or two in the first 3 rounds to keep flacco standing and picks up some more in FA to further evaluate further the WRs he has at this moment were bad due to the line or just plan bad. He will get a WR in this years draft but dont expect him to be Kelvin or Evans, he could go the derrick mason route and pick a savvy route runner who can get separation with his skills and not his body.

So with Ozzie leering at WRs this offseason who do you think he is targeting for our team? Free agent...rookie draft prospect...both???

TBH, he will more than likely try both routes, bring in guys to slowly weed out who belongs on the WR corps and who dont. At this point, no one is safe, anyone who isnt named Torrey smith anyway. Like ive said in other post, even with JJs great return ability, we could draft someone like tevin reese who is just as fast and mhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBYKUwhoSfQuch cheaper(video of Reese at the bottom)

Meh. I want  a small slot dude and all, but if we stick with our current SCHEME(Caldwell wouldn't be a bad playcaller if our scheme didn't suck) I'm not sure he'd be super effective.... He'd be effective, no doubt, but not AS effective as you think.

Austin is a good WR but can't stay healthy.

Most likely a rookie.

In my opinion, play calling defines the scheme.

My concern with Edelman is that he had a breakout year due to being force fed the ball, not because he's actually good. His numbers were very average (and maybe less than that) until this season, when he was one of two respectable receiving threats.

I somewhat agree, but he basically took over wes welkers position and did the same thing and did it very well...seemed he just received the same amount of targets that welker would have gotten...I think hes a perfect slot guy that could really help Flacco out and probably wouldnt come too expensive

Ozzie more say was speaking on a type of WR he would be targeting without going into detail so that other teams don't counter by driving up prices on potential targets.

I don't feel Edelman would be effective for us at all in our current offense. We rarely ever call plays with route combinations to open up underneath passes, Edelman and so many other WRs like him work well for the patriots and other teams because they call plays to the players strengths to put them in a position to succeed they adjust to the players skill set, rather than stick the player into the system and say make it work.

Edelman would could here and in our current offense he'd be asked to run 10 yd digs, curls, streaks from the outside WR position against top tier corners.

Example of what mean is simple: We rarely use WR Screens, or use routes like a quick out from a WR in motion to setup a double move later in the game.
Torrey smith doesn't get to catch many quick slants , smoke screens, rub routes on short passes where he can become a playmaker and gain yac ( although on the rare occasion he gets a crossing pattern and goes for 15+ yds the coaches still don't incorporate it enough ).
But the steelers took A.Brown and used him in a variety of ways this year, he worked out of slot a lot caught plenty of short passes, to draw the defense up close then they would attack downfield more.

While this is all true now, is this true going forward?  By all accounts, it looks like we'll be looking for a new OC if this Caldwell to the Lions thing happens.  How do we know the new guy won't come in and actually know how to call plays that get players open and use them to their strengths?

Exactly. That's why I tried to stress our current offense. Which lacks creativity and diversity of play-calling, Or adjusting to players talents and strengths.

This.

And I don't even know what type of receiver they're thinking of. Everyone would want a Megatron, or Fitzgerald, of course, but in lieu of that I think the biggest help would be a slot guy. Even Stokely, if he stayed healthy, would've helped, based upon his limited playing time- especially if they can't the the running game squared away.

I agree, while Edelman had a breakout year, the facts are the Patriots had a bunch of rookie WRs and often injured Amendola, no Gronkowski, Vereen out as well.

]

Joe Flacco could force feed Tandon Doss or anyone of our WRs the ball and I guarantee he wouldnt have the output Julian Edelman had. He is always open over the middle and is a pretty reliable target. The big picture is that Edelman is better than the majority of our WRs except maybe Torrey. He would be a big upgrade on what we got and could be a center piece in our passing game specifically where we were horrible last year which was converting 3rd downs.

In my opinion Julian Edelman is worth only about $4M per year given this was by far his only productive season with the Pats, however the FA market will likely make him overpaid as per usual. But I feel like ozzie could pull another Elvis Dumervill type deal and give him around $30M on 5 years, with the right structuring it could get done.

You would be correct Flacco could force feed Tandon doss and he wouldn't get the numbers that Edelman had this season mainly because our offense doesn't use a million underneath routes that are 5-7 yards down field. We don't use a lot of motion either. As for him being open over the middle that's because NE offense involves a lot of option routes based on coverages, so when there are guys in motion, RBs flaring out the backfield then Edelman runs a slant inside basically the route combinations creates the opening. Which is why I stress offensive creativity as being an issue.

I somewhat agree, but he basically took over wes welkers position and did the same thing and did it very well...seemed he just received the same amount of targets that welker would have gotten...I think hes a perfect slot guy that could really help Flacco out and probably wouldnt come too expensive

Yes he played the Welker role but as previously stated out of necessity, shane Vereen only played 8 games and he too was on pace to have 100 catches for nearly 1,000 yds and he's a RB, with Vereen's injury and Gronk etc Brady just threw to the only guy that wasn't dropping balls early in the season.

When I see Edelman, I think his ceiling is to become Brandon Stokley 2.0 solid guy, reliable WR, capable of yardage in the right system. Stokley recorded great seasons with Peyton manning. Patriots have been plugging guys into those short dink and dunk system for years D.Branch has always looked great at NE barely average anywhere else.

Since the topic is a possible slot WR, I would suggest waiting for a chance at Lance Moore because he is due 5M next season the Saints won't pay that since they have to pay J.Graham, and K.Stills played well.

to everyone saying the slot guy would be the most important for our team, ive said the same thing, but im starting to lean more towards mike evans or KB. with our pass protection issues, obviously the guy thatcould quickly exploit the hot route would make it easier to beat the blitz, but with a deep threat like mike evans, we'd be much less likely to face a blitz, and we also cant guarantee the kind of chemistry a slot man needs to have with his qb, that doesnt always happen, let alone happen quickly.

we could think about moving the chains more frequently, or getting back to what joe flacco does best, and thats escaping a blitz and turning a broken play into something big, its what won usthe super bowl, the mile high miracle was practically a broken play considering how close it was to a strip-sack. joe had a ton of big passes that came from a broken play and rolling out of a collapsed pocket in the super bowl, that also happens to be mike evans specialty considering those huge broken down plays were half of what made johnny football so huge this year.

qise lee is nfl ready, he would be good on the outside or in the slot, and could play the entire skill set of a wr, but mike evans potential is so much higher, and a bust seems highly unlikely for a guy who plays with so much intensity. KB is too much of a body catcher and he drops balls alot, he has the highest cieling but also byfar the highest bust potential.

its such a tough decision but i would behappy if we picked either of them

Edelman is too small, Miles can't stay healthy so I doubt that it's either one of them. He wants a great route runner, who causes matchup problems for the defense and can win a jump ball if necessary. There are ONLY  few of those receivers and the only one that I think that we have a decent shot at getting is Josh Gordon.

Gordon is not happening. His value is at an all time high right now. We aren't paying that price and the Browns wouldn't trade him within the division anyways.

I definitely agree with you for the most part and cannot argue with numbers, I guess at this point it just really begs the question..well maybe our system just isn't great. I would love to see those sorts of option routes and things underneath to convert on 3 downs and touchdowns. How many times do you see welker or edelmen run those quick little 3 yard outs or quick breaks over the middle. I think the ravens need a guy like that. A huge tight end is great but he makes no difference without that slot guy. Welker was incredibly successful when he had hernandez and gronk clearing out the middle and then thomas this year. What i think supports my point is edelmen did it without that big space clearing tight end for the most part. Weve seen more athletic linebackers and safeties control tight ends, but not many teams truly have an answer for a guy like welker. I think those athletic and quick slot guys can make a world of difference to a team if the offensive coordinator is willing to scheme to those strengths. I mean the one thing brady didnt have for early his whole career was a deep threat. Could you imagine what hed be if he constantly dink and dunked these 5 yard first down conversions to guys like vereen and edelmen and then had torrey smith to throw to...it would be unreal. I think edelmen and drafting a bigger wideout in the second if available could be a great mix of quickness and size

I think we also need a new system to fit our new wr(s). I think we are really just one wr away. Draft pick... Smith... Brown... and then we resign Doss. I still think Doss can be a good wr on this team. The offense was a fail from the preseason on. Even though Torrey had great numbers even he should of had a much better year. We also are short on cap so draft a pass catching te in the second and letting pitta walk for the money sounds like a smarter plan. Pitta may be Flaccos man but lets be honest if Graham gets his way and has the Franchise set for him as a wr then Franchising Pitta will be outrageous. Dickson may of had a bad year but he turned it on late once pitta returned and if we bring in a good pass catching te and good wr Dicksons game can return to where he was in his second year. Plus he missed aome time to early and that caused him to miss some time with Flacco as well.

Agreed. But that's the only Oz caliber receiver that I could think of that we REMOTELY had a shot of acquiring.

But then again... in Oz we trust!

Wow, I don't like any of these guys. I suggest Ozzie mans up and drafts a WR in the 1st round. Both Lee and Evans are great prospects and if he trades down he'll be able to get Matthews and Robinson (all of this might change after the combine ofcourse). All of them are better options for the Ravens than what they can get in FA.

lol what's funny about this is that I recalled the year we traded for Lee Evans in the offseason, and at the time I was actually excited because he always seemed like a good WR stuck on a bad team. I can't imagine how I'd react to Megatron in a Ravens uni lol

i duno. All comes down to harbs and what he wants. Conservative control the clock type football, thus he will insert hostler that knows exactly what he wants and how to go about it, or if he realises it's time for change and will hand the offence to a new guy. I could very well see him promoting hostler to keep an element of control, and if that happens, and we crap the bed again, the buck will stop with him.

Hostler also ran the coryell at San Fran.

do you think if norv turner is gone from cleveland harbs will go after him... what is out there in the college ranks... it seems that all the coordinators now are old coaches and recycled from other teams maybe a change in tactics might help. The offenses in college seem to have faster tempos which might benefit Flacco and his game management. We wont have to look for the homerun on everyplay.
