Ravens Season-Review Press Conference

334 posts in this topic

Not really. My high school coach always said that the little things in football made the biggest difference. Wholesale changes tend to result in becoming as bad as the Browns or Dolphins.

Yeah, little things like play calling. Which will remain the same uninspired crap we ran this season. When you rank last in the league for every single offensive category - it is beyond time for wholesale coaching changes. But us? Oh we just promote the guy whose scheme ruined our run game. Brilliant.

Three big statements he made regarding personnel

- Bigger interior OL (bye Shipley, Gino)

- Athletic Free Safety (bye Ihedigbo)

- Targeted type of WR; he was vague on who but said he and Harbaugh were in agreement on this player and they would be on our roster soon

Pretty exciting.

Some unwelcome news: Castillo WAS and will still be the lead OL coach. The OL sucked under him. Maybe it was personnel, that's what the Ravens are thinking.

At this point, I am finding it difficult to get excited on any level. Do the players really matter when we keep the same coaches? When we promote the guy who ruined the run game to OL coach? Especially if one goes back and looks at his track record (specifically sack amounts) when he had that job in Philly? It's actually kind of scary.

Because Gino was a rookie right? He sure had a full season to sit behind and learn from Birk. I'd say that is indeed an intelligent move albeit it didn't pan out as expected.

not what I meant they are talking about replacing gino with a bigger rookie center . everyone is all excited because we are getting new lineman ...... rookie center same thing we saw with gino that postion takes time that's not a plug and play slot.  that's my point

In all fairness, look at the QBs that were throwing to them.

in all fairness no oline replacing gino with a rookie . joe won't be throwing to anyone either .

His line gave up a lot of sacks mainly cuz they passed all the time but the high running avg is also deceptive cuz teams were looking for the pass. Unfortunately we're stuck with him. Harbs got his way. Doubt we're gonna be a power run team anymore. That's sad. :(

since I can't find anything about the oline on comcastsportsnet from the news conference . are they planning to address it , if so how. I saw mention of pitta and getting a true free safety....and fixing the defense,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Ozzie said we need bigger interior lineman.

yep we are I feel bad for rice and pearce they are both two very good backs and both excelled at power running .

I agree. Another rookie will probably have the same issues. It's not an easy position to jump right into. I think it is more likely we see what Jensen can do or try to land a veteran C to come in and compete for a starting job. Gino also improved as the season went along, so it's possible he will just be better next season. It's not unheard of for players to improve in this league.

including yanda?

No.  Harbaugh said in his presser last week that Yanda is cemented at RG.

I think Mike Evans fits that WR/TE that convert 3rd downs...hes a big athletic kid with some fire in him...Id love to take him first...and OL in the next two rounds.

Gino is the only undersized interior olineman we have. That was probably Ozzie's way of calling him out.I think we'll leave Osemele and Yanda at there positions and find a new center.

Am I the only one who thought Ihedigbo played well this year...yet it seems as if they're ready to move on just in order to get Elam in his natural position....is that bc they weren't pleased or bc they think ihedigbo will get offered more?

Let's not get carried away - not sure I'm aware of a universe where Rice is a power back lol

Also what happens if we cant afford to bring back Monroe...I think everyone is assuming we bring him back..but another team could very well outbid us...if we lose him we without question have to go OL in the first round.

Because they want to move the young guy they've invested a 1st round pick into to his natural position.  Ihedigbo played well, but he's older and not a long term solution.

Shipley was a problem too. So maybe the depth needs to be improved.

Nope, you're not the only one. And that's the issue - many teams will be coming after him with higher offers than what we can afford. Elam needs to be at strong safety and having two hard hitting safeties who cannot cover very well is the main reason one has to go (or sit on the bench). Elam is the clear choice since he's younger and costs much less than Ihedigbo

This was a really dumb move. Harbs basically stood with Castillo and probably backed his job on the line for his bff.

If there was a time in place to evaluate the organization and get back to common sense, this should be the time.

This isn't the time to strike egos John! You are falling into the same trap Andy Reid has fallen into completely backing def. coord Castillo in eagles.

we just had a losing season  they knew going in 7-9 games it would take to install zbs it didn't work and they are recommitting themselves to it again this year. that's not winning. u can not draft 2 starting guards, 2 starting tackles, and a center  and expect things to be any different then last year. first off your not going to get that many starting lineman from one draft . anyone who starts a rookie center , not named jerry jones, is not intelligent . gino was lost  so we are gonna draft a bigger center and what have the same thing happen again.

ozzie is going to draft  a starting wr good route runner , good hands, can fight for the ball . how many first round picks do we have and when in ozzies history of drafting wideouts has he ever got a good one. torrey was the first wr in 20 drafted receivers  to go over 1000 yards. no oline we can't win . and we can't draft 5 starting olineman with one first round pick at 16 or 17

The team missed out on the play-offs but last time I checked, 8-8 isn't a losing a season. There is nothing wrong with the ZBS. You might believe upgrading Gino won't change anything but that doesn't necessarily make it so. If Monroe returns, Osemele returns healthy and the team finds an upgrade over Oher at RT (not particularly difficult), the OL will rebound as a unit.

Strictly looking at the WRs the team has drafted and pinning it on Ozzie is foolish. You don't develop WRs when your QB play is routinely in flux and you're mostly committed to pounding the rock and playing good defense. To your last point, I don't know where the team stated it would draft 5 starting lineman. Regardless, for as poorly at the unit played this season, they don't need massive overhaul to become a good unit again.

if the scheme failed with the linemen we have ,,,,we will add another rookie center and all is fixed I don't bu that.  it was posted ozzie wants bigger interior lineman .....osemele is short and  umm round, and yanda is short  too .oher is gone  and Monroe is not a sure thing to  resign unless we tag him which is very expensive. so that's 5 if you don't make the playoffs what is the point ...there is none

ozzie drafts the players  deliberately drafting players to fill the ir esp wideouts. is not going to help.

rice is a probowl back?

Yes but he isn't a power back.  He isn't pushing anyone backwards for short yardage. In fact, Rice is best in space. Which is why we used him alot as a receiving back.

Does anyone think the talk of getting bigger on the interior o-line could mean some bigger changes overall?

Tbh I reckon they're going BPA in round one. If they really like Amaro/Ebron they'll snap them up, but I wouldn't be entirely surprised by a defender either.

They've basically promised a "certain type of WR", which is encouraging at least.

Bleh, they just praised Jim Hostler in a big way.

Center is the only position on the interior o line that needs improvement so I'm not too sure about Gino's future

Not meaning to butt in but I'm sure Oz was talking about overall size and strength not height. Lol.

well now he isn't even a probowl back so I guess this is moot

Ozzie basically said as much. He wants Monroe back and he'll use the extra time granted to in-house FAs to do so.

sadly I am going by what others have posted . there is no link to the press conference . but from what I have heard  Castillo is staying that dooms everything on the offense period . we could have peyton manning and brady as a back up and we still wont be successful
