Ravens Season-Review Press Conference

It's uncharacteristic of Ozzie to announce something about a star player in that manner. I don't believe Suggs is going anywhere. Ozzie is more a behind the scene guy, not a Jerry Jones.

Tbh I think he was just saying he's prepared to make a hard decision on the guy if he feels that's what's best for the team in the 2014 season and beyond. I'm almost inclined to say Ozzie would be tempted to cut Suggs and let him test the market if it came down to that. I can't see him getting more anywhere else than he'd get here.

Yeh, Ozzie gets it, all right! We had a guy on our team that converted third and sevens and got YACs. His name was Anquan Boldin who has better career stats than Larry Fitzgerald. I guess that's why they call him the Wizard of Oz. I'm glad he has seen the error of his ways. I just wish he would admit that he was wrong when Q was traded for a 6th (?) round draft pick and a tip from Jim Harbaugh on Marlon Brown, an UFA. It would be great to see Q in purple & black again but I don't think it will happen so the next best thing will be a clone of him but a little taller. It takes a big man to admit he was wrong. Fess up, Oz!

I know its business but I don't like what he said wrt Terrell Suggs either. Its totally tactless and he might as well have told Terrell he's not afraid to let him go. That's not the way to win friends and influence people. It didn't work out too well last year. I'm surprised to hear a GM talk like that at a Press Conference. The technique usually backfires by building a wall between the negotiating parties instead of tying to build a bridge.

I posted the same sentiment in another thread about Suggs was that supposed to be some kind of backhanded compliment that came out wrong or was his intention all along to antagonize him. It was totally tactless and disrespectful.Oh they are not going to admit they made a mistake even yesterday Ozzie said , we have no problem letting good football players go  Boldin is making a fool of Ozzie. I doubt Suggs comes back and for Ozzie to bring Boldin back he has to admit he made a mistake and after yesterday that's not happening

I can. Somebody will pay him big bucks. There are a few teams with big cap space who would jump to have T-Sizzle on the roster.

I wonder if Alex Mack really is on our radar

I would love it if he was but he has stated that any offer he gets he is going to let the browns match it . and they have allot of cap space , he's not going anywhere .

True on Boldin and .... Suggs. Two wrong moves!

I just think from an FO's perspective, they'd have to look at his age, mounting list of injuries, declining stats, the kind of amount he'd be after, and how deep the draft pool for pass rushers is supposed to be this year. Not that I think he's a bad player, but an FO will be taking all that into account. I guess it only takes one team willing to break the bank in "win now" mode or something, but I suspect we'd be willing to pay Suggs more than what most other FOs will. Just a hunch, and it may not even get to that point.

Biscotti called some guys out, I love it! Harbaugh should feel on the hot seat as he is stubborn and too loyal to his friends. Could of cost him his job with Cameron, now it's Castillo. Add in poor coaching decisions and poor time management, he definitely needs to improve next year. He seems like a nice guy but I think he is a little arrogant when something works. Instead of looking at the problem and fixing it, he is just going to keep trying to put the square block through the triangle hole until it fits.

People say this all of the time and yet, other teams WILL pay a cat more money than the Ravens would if they feel that guy is worth it to them!  He may not be worth it to the Ravens....but to other teams?  Yeah!

So Pitta isn't worth 5 million when we clearly don't have any other tight end that's better than him and probably wont have a chance to draft one just as good or better but Arthur Jones is worth 5 million  when we clearly have other guys like Mcphee, Moore, Tyson, Canty, and Willaims whom could fill the same role as him or be even better?

Pitta isn't worth close to 5 mi a year are you kidding?? He has pretty good hands, sure but he also showed this year that he still drops the ball from time to time like our other wide outs and he also disappeared at times with Torrey this year. I get the guy was hurt, but so was Gronk and he came back and killed it before getting hurt again. I am all in favor of letting both Pitta and Torrey walk instead of overpaying for them. Neither is truely elite at their position so why pay them like they are. Instead save the money, maybe someone big becomes available in free agency we could get or use all our high draft picks to gamble and draft new offensive weapons for Joe. It is very clear what we have at this point on offense, mediocrity. I would rather clean house, gamble and start over on offense than be mired in mediocrity a few more years because we paid a top 20 wr and a top 15 TE top 10 wr money and top 5 TE money. With that said if we can sign them for a fair price I am down to keep them. I am just worried of making a Mike Wallace type mistake with these guys

I'm sorry but  the way  the Ravens run their offense no body can really look like super stars besides the running back. Torrey and Pitta would look so much better if we actually had a good offensive coordinator that's actually creative  with the passing attack or should I say less predictable with the passing attack. I'm kinda tired of people saying Torrey isn't a number 1 or Pitta isn't really that good when we all know our offense coordinator isn't  really that good. I don't see how it make sense to call out these guys when they are forced in a offense  that isn't even meant for them to succeed consistently .

I don't see why you would even want to compare Gronk to Pitta especially knowing people are just different from others. Some players can be injured for awhile then come back  like they never left and then theres players that need time to get back in to the  grove of things after being injured for awhile . I know Gronk is a really good tight end but he has one of the best offensive coordinator in the league  that knows how to get his receivers open .

The Ravens  offense for three years made Anquan Boldin look mediocre theres no doubt In my mind if the Ravens are still running the same system  that another good receiver will look mediocre as well in this offense.I would say a  Andre Johnson type receiver would help but at the end of day if your passing game is predictable it won't take long for a defense to shut you down. The money issue between Pitta and Torrey in my opinion will play it self out because I expect both to be here beyond 2014 and if Torrey gets Mike Wallace  type money or Pitta gets 5 million per year then the Ravens  must know what they doing.

negotiation tactic. If u say u want him he has all the leverage. Say you've been here before and ended up cutting guys. He has none

Your point is well taken but I think he still could have handled it more tactfully. He basically is daring T-Sizzle to call his bluff. Do I think he's prepared to let him walk? Yes. Do I think that would be in the Ravens best interest? No. Being a person of principle is great but cutting off one's nose to spite one's face is not. I think that happened with Q and I'm afraid it may happen with T-Sizzle unless Steve Bischiotti put his foot down. He says he would make wholesale changes to the team but that would be like throwing the baby out with the bath water. I agree. The bath water is dirty but it would be counter-productive to start over and it would it only make matters worse. T-Sizzle showed the fans last year what kind of heart he has and you can't coach that. I know you want to keep T-Sizzle as do I.

my thought is to blame the defense as a whole, statistically good but lacked passion, blood, desire at certain times.
Suggs was injured ankle, neck ( rumors ),    in 8 games,   he produced more than others

This is false sir. If the weapons were that good, they would make the offense succeed. I get that we don't have Sean Payton or another offensive master running our plays and offensive minds like that can make others who aren't that good look very good, but if Pitta and Torrey were THAT good they would make plays, find ways to get open, beat double coverage more consistently and not disappear for entire weeks at a time. It is a two way street my man. Is our coordinator mediocre? I would say so, but believe if we had a Megatron instead of Torrey or a Gronk instead of Pitta those guys would still be gettin it in our offense. I am so tired of hearing excuses about the offensive coordinator and our awful scheme for our mediocre players. Maybe if our guys didn't stink the scheme would work and Caldwell would like a mastermind like he did in the playoffs last year.

How many megatrons and Gronks are their  in this league? Where is the next Megatron and Gronk in this free agency or draft?   The ravens don't need  a master mind at offensive coordinator but just  a offensive coordinator with common sense. It doesn't take much to realize  that hey Torrey Smith would be really good on a slant , drag route, and other routes that is beyond asking him to run  deep up the field 90 percent of the time.

When we  went against the Bengels their number one receiver was struggling to make plays against Jimmy Smith. Did their offense coordinator stick with the  mentally saying  hey AJ Green is a good wideout he should get open eventually ? the answer to that question is no  he decided to move AJ Green all around the field even in the slot  to get his receiver open and guess what it worked  because he went on and burned Matt Elam for a touchdown.

Torrey Smith was struggling to get open in that game  did Jim Caldwell do any thing different to get Torrey Smith open? the answer to that question is no  because for some reason he kept with the  mentally that Torrey Smith will beat these guys deep even If the defense knows whats coming .  I think its pretty foolish to actually believe that a good players doesn't  need to  be put in the right situation to succeed and at end of the day its really not about beating the team physically as much any more but more about out smarting the opposing team.

I gurantee you if Torrey Smith went to a team like the Bills, Rams, Panthers, Colts, and any other team that doesn't have a high power offense his stats will be much better and he will have more touchdowns. The reason I say this because our offense passing attack sucks that bad and no team in the NFl (I really mean no team) runs our offense the way we do and I don't mean that in a good way . I'm not the only  person that  believes this  and Greg Cosell whoms is a well respect NFl analyst  had this to say about our offense here  : http://espn.go.com/espnradio/play?id=10164823

I even go a little step further and quote somethings that he said about our offense " My film study of the Baltimore Ravens reveals a static, inert, predictable offense that is not difficult to defend tactically"  and he also had this to say "Another feature that stands out watching the Ravens passing game is how little they do conceptually to attack and break down man coverage. When your receivers cannot consistently win, you have to help them with specific tactics. Wide receiver motion, bunch concepts, stack release principles, rub elements – all help loosen and defeat man coverage. I don’t see that watching the Ravens. The result, of course, is Flacco looks indecisive and uncertain in the pocket. At times, he holds the ball too long and takes too many sacks". He said  all of this here http://nflfilms.nfl.com/2012/01/20/cosell-talks-the-ravens-predictable-offense/

So this is what I got out of this.

Ozzie is going to do what he did last year EXCEPT this is the offense over the defense.

Look at who he got last year.

Dumervil
Canty
Smith
Elam
Brown
Williams
Simon

Who are all big parts of the defense, or will be big parts. If Williams develops the way we think he will, Ngata will go back to end. Essentially replacing Art Jones.

This also means Cody will probably be back most likely. We will also probably sign another vet Dlinemen to plug in.

He made it seem like he wanted Corey back, and he's welcome. Had a bad start but did good by the end of the year.

So I don't think much will be done on defense except resigning a few players, extending Suggs.

So there we go. We might go after a true FS.

So. What I got on offense is we want to beef up the interior.

The interior should improve with KO coming back and Yanda getting healthy. Sounds like Ozzie is gonna target a veteran center.

He didn't mention RT, so he must have confidence in Wagner.

So beefing it up means we are going for DEPTH. I'm good with KO and Yanda at guard and am willing to make sure Gino and some vet have a competition.

We also are big in going for a WR OR TE.
The "or" probably means that Ozzie is confident that we are resigning Pitta. Looks like no two TE sets here.

Meaning we are probably looking for a WR (or two) in the draft.

We also might take up a cheap option like Britt.

We have totally different view points haha. If Torrey runs deep routes 90% of the time then why is it he had 1 maybe 2 plays all year where flacco threw the bomb and he caught it for a big gain? Where did all his yards come from?? Torrey ran plenty of short 5-10 yard button hook and slant routes. Maybe the problem is he doesn't run these routes well enough to consistently fool defenders. You have no basis to claim his stats would be better on any of those teams except for the Panthers and the Colts because those teams have better QB's and better weapons. Both Steve Smith and TY Hilton is better than anyone we currently have and I would probably take Greg Olson over Dennis Pitta too so yeah I guess with Torrey and Pitta on those teams maybe their stats go up a touch, but at the same time they wouldn't get the same amount of looks because they would be buried on the depth chart so you really don't know if they would have better stats.

Bottom line is good players make plays and shine regardless of the situation. These guys flat out do not do this consistently. Joe needs some guys that can do this so hopefully Oz will either trade for or draft a stud since we never make the splashy free agent signing and I wouldn't want an Eric Decker anyway who is about the biggest free agent out there as far as WR go.

I can literally count the times Torrey ran a slant or drag route  most of his routes were deep routes, come back routes, curls , and or other routes that opposing defender could easily defend against in press  man coverage. You said  "You have no basis to claim his stats would be better on any of those teams except for the Panthers and the Colts because those teams have better QB's and better weapons" I have enough evidence to prove my claim especially when Mike Preston had this to say  "The Ravens were vanilla and predictable to the point where they were tipping off a lot of their own plays. They were creative at times, but not enough that they kept opposing defenses off balance" and then when he said "In the passing game, where were the rubs, picks, rollouts and quick step throws? Where were the change-of-pace running backs, the big stud runner in the red zone or the pass-catching threat out of the back field"  link

I already mention what Greg Cossell said about our offense but this is what he said  "The Ravens passing offense is a contrast to all nfl passing games;  they are a  intermediate  to down field passing team which consist of a lot of risker throws, low percentage throws, and the offense will not have stability to it". I think just base off that it's enough for me  to say that Torrey Smith or Dennis Pitta could be much better in any other nfl team offense  even the ones that are bad. I seen college team use their receivers better than the Ravens use their receivers and to me that's pretty sad. Mike Preston and Greg Cossell wouldn't have said the things they did if The Ravens were actually using their receivers in away you keep believing they are but I still doubt you will believe it is true.

You said "Bottom line is good players make plays and shine regardless of the situation" I think Torrey Smith already prove that which is why he had 1,000+ receiving yards this year but bottom line is good players can't consistently shine when he is place in consistently in a messy situation. Look at Boldin he had really good  year with the 49ers tell me why Boldin look so old with us but look so young with the 49ers? hmmmm I get the idea that maybe the whole time he was here  The Ravens weren't using him correctly.  I guess you going to say that the 49ers have a better quarterback than Flacco and I think its crazy that you think Cam Newton and Andrew luck are far ahead of Flacco but ok .

1) When we had better personal last year with Boldin and a hot Pitta in the playoffs I would say we used our receivers fine. To me that proves Caldwell's system was effective. The error was dealing Boldin and believing Torrey could be a true number 1 wr and take over games. He isn't because he doesn't consistently make plays and get open.

2) 1000 yard season is average bro. Brian Hartline caught over 1000 yards this season... Give yourself a pat on the back Torrey, really stellar stuff my man. I would have been impressed if he would have kept the pace he set over the first half of the season. After the first 5 games he had 2 games over 75 yards...

3) Yes Kaep, Newton and Andrew Luck were all FAR superior to Joe this season. They all had better stats and all made the playoffs. Sorry to say our boy blew big time this year, the truth hurts. When he is at his best I believe he is better than these guys, but he wasn't close to that at any point this year. I truely believe part of the reason Boldin had a better year this year with the 49ers though had to do with the fact that he was coming off a monster postseason and his reward for that was complete and utter disrespect by the team for whom he played a leading role in winning a Super Bowl for. That kind of motivation combined with playing for a better QB this past year led to a small increase in stats.

Uhuh  I see everything I provide from mike preston and greg cossel just going to be ignored oh well you right it obviously all the players fault . I doubt you ever watched the 49ers   offense to come up with the idea that  Boldin  play is simply due to motivation alone. we just going to have to  agree to disagree.

I'm not the only  person that  believes this  and Greg Cosell whoms is a well respect NFl analyst  had this to say about our offense here  :http://espn.go.com/e...lay?id=10164823

He said  all of this here http://nflfilms.nfl....table-offense/

I remembered reading that! Darn you vanilla offense! Hopefully there will be a decision with these teams interviewing Caldwell. It's really holding us up trying to find a new OC.

So this is what I got out of this.

Ozzie is going to do what he did last year EXCEPT this is the offense over the defense.

I feel the same way!

Dude after his one monster week he really didn't do all that much more there then he did here. He had like 200 more yards this year than he did last year and played all 16 games this year as opposed to 15 last year. With that said he is still wayyyy better than either Torrey or Pitta. I do not for the life of me understand how you can sit here and objectively tell me that these guys are elite level players at their positions. Also I love how you repeated quote a Baltimore Sun writer and a single analyst when bashing Caldwell and the play calling. 1) If Preston was that great a writer he wouldn't be working for The Sun. 2) Cosell knows his stuff, but do you know who knows more? the 32 teams who hire personnel guys and who have repeatedly hired Caldwell and as history shows, with the right players, good position players, his offense and scheme are very successful. No time would hire a guy who's scheme doesn't work so all you gotta do is look at his history.

Who ever said  any of these guys were elite? not me. Its not about Preston being a great writer its about getting to the truth of things  Both Preston and Cossell(especially Cossell)  have pointed out how Vanilla and predictable our offense is . I don't see you providing any thing  at all to discredit what they said other than saying Preston wouldn't be working at the sun if he was such a great  writer.

You said" Cosell knows his stuff, but do you know who knows more? the 32 teams who hire personnel guys and who have repeatedly hired Caldwell and as history shows"  . Ok what are you getting with this because Jim Caldwell  hasn't been more than quarterback coach for most of his career  in the nfl and he only been on two teams(Colts and Buccs) before he became the Ravens quarterback coach/offensive coordinator. Jim Caldwell  has never been a offensive coordinator  at all until  he became a Raven so their really no history on his offensive coordinator skills unless you talking about his college days. I will admit  that he did help the Buccs and Colts when it came  to creating good passing attacks.

JIm Caldwell is overall at his best when it comes to developing quarterbacks that is his true bread and butter. I appreciate  that he help us win the super bowl and he did a great job but some thing has to change. His play calling last year was  not good at all it doesn't take Boldin and a healthy Pitta to call plays that aren't predictable.  I'm well aware of what the Ravens had on offense but if you can't see last year that we had a offense that refuse to be unpredictable then wow.

You said with the right players, good position players, his offense and scheme are very successful. I don't want a offensive coordinator that needs the right player for his scheme I want a offensive coordinator  that  fits  his scheme with  what ever player he has. I want a offensive coordinator that can actually sit down and say well I don't have a  Anquan Boldin , Calvin Johnson, Gronk type of receiver but the guys I have now I can work with them and provide them with plays  in which suit their skill sets instead of saying well I know I don't have Anquan Boldin, Calvin Johnson, and Gronk type of receivers but Im going use these guys in that same fashion any way.

I don't see how that's so hard to understand but any way I'm done  with this conversation . I just  hope big changes are really made for our team on offense like Harbaugh seems to be getting at in the press conference and if not well im still a Raven fan regardless.

That's the problem ravensdfan, Castillo wasn't promoted to anything...he will have the same job this upcoming season as he had this past season...O-line Coach! I said this earlier this season as reported by Luke Jones from WNST.
That is what Harbs said in this AM's presser. Harbs took the blame for Castillo getting all the flack by giving him the "run game coordinator" position which Harbs claimed was a misnomer. Either way it is just shifting "titles" only, Castillo will be doing the same job as last season...good or bad! Personally, I feel like I am reliving groundhog day, lol. What bothers me more is that Harbs wasn't completely honest with the fans about Castillo's role. I wonder what else we weren't or are not being told. Whatever the case may be, this is a team in major flux right now, imho. I feel like I am in hell with a broken bat! lol Time will tell, but I do agree with you that it is rather depressing, especially since Harbs admitted in the presser that run scheme and pass protection were what Castillo was in charge of this past season. Its mind boggling!!!

John has divide his own coaching staff againts him & now the ones not on his side will be removed, RB coach, Andy will be gone soon, Caldwell also then John will make the WRer coach the OC....
