Keep WRs Smith and Brown, cut everyone else and start anew (what do you think?)

84 posts in this topic

My picks for wrs are and in this order... Evans(draft pick) Smith Brown Doss Thompson... Mellette.

I think with a new coordinator and putting Smith back in the two spot and Brown and Doss as the slot wrs it would open things up. Smith is a good wr but not a true number 1. Doss and Brown with the right system can do great things. Doss may have not had a great year but did show flashes of good and a new system hopefully with a better sets of routes could open everyone up.

A new system would help though... that's the key. I would almost look at finding someone from the college ranks or someone who has the ability to teach a fast paced offense. We have the youth and talent just haven't figured out how to use them.

I'm not sure. I think it's possible that he would have been placed on IR even if he wasn't hurt. It could have been pure coincidence. Either way, I'm not sure they're counting on Mellette to be an answer. He'll get his shot in training camp, and while he probably has a bit of a leg up, he's guaranteed nothing.

Oh. yeah. I still see the need for the team to get a Big WR in the early rounds and scat in the later rounds.

its gonna hurt to see jacoby walk(which he probably will) he provides a spark and swagger to our team, but is nothing more than a big play #3 4 or 5, when we have those big play receivers already, and what we need is a chain mover, and jacoby isn't. I still think we keep doss another year, we have no better options at this point and unless we strike gold in the draft or FA, and who knows maybe he finally builds some chemistry with flacco and we end up seeing that potential all of us have raved about for years.

I think we have a good core of future receivers, but oddly enough we don't even have our #1. I think its no question we try to address this in the draft, a high pick on a WR, and a mid pick in hopes that we get a late round gem, and all of a sudden our wr corps could be an asset for us.

first things first though, fix.that.line. no number of receivers will help us if we cant slow down a 4 man, hell even sometimes a 3 man rush.

I've got no problem with Mellette in the lineup, but we cannot go into the season relying on Torrey, Marlon, and a group of no names to play the way they would have to in order to become a potent offense. We seriously need the front office to draft a star WR high and devote a lot towards involving him in the offense.

Also, I know it's not realistic, but since Decker is a FA after the season, what type of contract would he command that we wouldn't be able to afford to sign him?

I reckon Decker will get a solid deal between $40-50m. Similar to Antonio Brown.

Just find a way to get Sammy Watkins. Him, and an upgraded OL, add some help at TE, Bingo. Effective, no, dangerous offense.

I know people don't like him much because of what happened last off season, but what do you guys think about possibly signing Riley Cooper?

I'd expect the Eagles to only sign one of Maclin or Cooper, and Maclin sounds the favourite right now.

Cooper had very solid production this year, and I feel that he could be just what we need. He is a big, strong receiver who can make catches in traffic and he's one of the better blocking receivers in the league. I'd be disappointed if he were our only addition at receiver, but if we could get him on the cheap, I think he'd make a nice addition.

Only if he gets a haircut.  That mop looks ridiculous.

Good point. But would it be improved if he got a beard and went for the whole Jesus look?

You say keep torre and Brad which is a start but I think if you use tightens right bin middle you can use Jacoby better and Brad and torrie. Doss is a good player not great and we need a receiver who go up and bring down so we can create diversity in passing game used to have it in bold in thanks flacco. We need to stop being one two yard receiving and create run to open pass. A big fast receiver with speed like torrie opens whole field. Draft work cut out for us.

Huh?

I have no idea what this said, and who the hell is "Brad"?

I really hope you were drunk when posting this.

I agree, draft either Evans, Watkins,Lee or Jordan and keep Smith, Brown, Mellette and eitherJones\Doss\Thompson. Then Darft a TE.

I agree that we need another good WRs that is a possession guy. What we missed this year was at least one receiver that when the play breaks down and Joe had to roll out, no one was helping him and coming back for the ball. They all seemed to think that just running their routes was all that was needed. Pitta is the only one that would adjust his play when needed. If who ever we bring in is not coached any better about how to handle those breakdown plays then we will have a long season again and a lot of frustration.

We also need that other TE to complement Pitta.

I'd keep Smith, Brown, Thompson, Mellette, Doss. We really need a vet to come in imo + drafting a guy. Let Thompson, Mellette and Doss battle it out with some other guys for the lower rosters spots in training camp.

Torrey and Brown are no-brainers. They are under contract and were our two best WRs last year.

I would like to bring Jacoby back, but I will reiterate that I would have no problem parting ways if he demands too much money. Our wide receivers need more physicality, and so we should either pick a guy like that in the draft, OR sign one of the following 5 players:

Anquan Boldin

Eric Decker

Golden Tate

Riley Cooper

Doug Baldwin (restricted FA)

My preference would be to have only 5 WRs on the roster this year. And so based on my observations, we should also part ways with at least two (maybe even three) of the following 5 players:

Tandon Doss

Deonte Thompson

Aaron Mellette

Kamar Aiken

Gerrard Sheppard

That should not be a problem, because only two of them recorded any catches last season.

Fire Jim Hostler

Hostler's been great w/ our receivers,. With early draft WRs, I can see him developing some probowls for us.

that is, if his willing to stay @ his position

Huh?

Name one pro bowl caliber WR we've had. Torrey is the closest we've come to. Boldin was used poorly prior to Flacco's freedom in the playoffs last year, and none of our mid-round receivers (Doss, Reed, Williams) ever came close to breaking out. The only consistency at the position was Mason, who was developed in Nashville.

However, my major problem with Hostler is his lack of play calling ability and offensive ingenuity, which was illustrated not only this past year, but also his season with the 49ers when Frank Gore went from a top-5 back to bottom-25. The Ravens attitude, from the Ray Lewis era, has been to be conservative on offense. Without a top defense and a crap line, and with a could-be-great QB in Flacco, we need a WRs coach AND an OC to create gameplans that utilizes the strengths of our WRs.

I'm no expert, but I feel Torrey's strengths are his quickness and speed coming off cuts, not those 10,000 curl routes he runs to the sideline.

Our money is spread to thin to be a good football team. We need receivers bad and all we can do is draft one.  It takes a while for a receiver to develop.  We need veteran receivers that can make plays.

I wouldn't cut Thompson or Mellette just yet.

They might be all we can afford.

In my opinion I think its time  for the Ravens to allow their young guys to grow instead of signing veteran receivers too stunt their growth. We wouldnt have known how good Marlon Brown would have been if Jacoby Jones had not been injuried . Ozzie Newsome said he thinks the Ravens have a pretty good receiver coach in Jim Hostler, well if thats the case let Hostler(if he's the receiver coach) develop these guys and see what happens instead of paying big money on a veteran receiver. The 2014 draft is probably the most deepest draft with talented receivers and theres really no way The Ravens can't find the receiver they want whom can probably start right away.

Whoever is brought in, the play-calling has to improve. PFF just released an article on screens during the regular season. The team got 102 yards off RB screens, good for a respectable 13th. How did they do in WR yards? An embarrassing 34th out of 38 QBs that threw the rock. The team got 24 screen yards from WRs.

Torrey isn't a YAC beast like Demaryius Thomas or Dez Bryant but he's more than capable of picking up yards after the catch. Same goes Jacoby and even Marlon.

Good point and nice link. Even when Cam was here many (myself included) wondered why the team would abandon the screen after a successful gain and not run it again during the game. Bewildering!

Doss has very good hands, just look at the way he caught punts, he pin pointed the ball and grabbed it out of the air( which is very difficult). Hes a decent enough reciever to keep on the roster, but Aaron Mellette WILL beat him out for 4th receiver.
