Secondary

Maybe we get lucky and manage to get Jairus Byrd in the off-season.

We'll need a decent back-up with Byrd but I would really like to grab Byrd.

"16t. Baltimore Ravens (pending coin flip)
Record: 8-8
Team needs: WR, OT, CB
Analysis: Baltimore's offense hasn't looked the same without Anquan Boldin. They also haven't played that well in the secondary during the 2013 season. Ozzie Newsome will always take the best available player, but it would be tough to pass on a talented wideout to complement Torrey Smith."

why do people say our secondary didn't play well? i think they played very well in 2013 despite the lack of a pass rush in the second half of the year. i think this is one of the only areas we don't need to address for 2014.

It's funny they claim we haven't played well in the secondary, so that automatically means we need a corner. If anything, we need to find a true FS so we can put Elam at SS where he belongs.

Ravens had a Rookie (playing out of position), CB coming off an injury, Mostly special teams safety and what looked to be a bust initially at CB starting all season. They did better than most of the secondary's in the NFL.

Elam has potential. He is a hard hitting safety and in the Cincinnati game he came up and made some big tackles on RBs. (Unfortunately our DBs were often the ones making the tackles when they ran the ball) He definetly needs to work on his coverage skills, there was no excuse for aj green to be that open on that touchdown. We currently have 2 safeties who both are great hitters but they struggle in coverage.

Draft a top flight corner, move Webb to FS, Jimmy at the other corner position and then Elam at SS. Diggs comes in to wreck the line here and again and have fun in the secondary.

Done!

I actually think this is a great idea. Webb is a great tackler, has great speed and good ball skills...would be a very good free safety. Then we could draft someone like Gilbert out of OK state or Fuller out of Virginia Tech, both 6 feet. I would rather take care of this in house if possible and save some money to go after a wide receiver or TE in the offseason rather than spend a bunch of money on Byrd...isnt Byrd often injured as well?

That would be nice.  I wonder who we may be targeting at FS.  Both FA and the draft are pretty weak at FS.

I would agree with the notion of moving Webb to FS, but then who could we get as the number one corner? I don't trust Jimmy Smith as a number one corner.

I trust Jimmy Smith as the number 1.  Even in this case though, moving Webb just creates another hole.

The man who shut down Megatron and Pissed of Brandon Marshall like there's no tomorrow?

Just saying, he was our #1 this season

Didn't Webby play FS in college? IIRC, we converted him to corner.

Byrd is a fantastic FS. I'm guessing you mean they're top heavy. Is Drummond declaring or is he going back for another year?

I was looking more beyond Byrd since I don't think he's a realistic target for us.

As for Drummond, nothing is certain, but it looks like he's heading back.

Lol, you'll never trust Jimmy, will you? Not even if he shuts down Megatron, Fitzgerald, AJ Green, & Julio Jones if they were all on the same field at the same time and it was only #22 covering them? I'm not mad at you or calling you out. I just remember discussing Jimmy with you (and others) during the preseason in the preseason game threads and "discussing" how he was a good CB and he would show you guys this year. I saw him shut guys down and I read (when I returned) he shut guys down as well. So, I'm not sure what else you want from the guy.

I really am convinced Jimmy Smith is the Joe Flacco of the defense.

I'm kind of hoping he does return because I would love for him and Gordon to be our top two picks next year (Barring some kind of change, of course). I feel Drummond won't be in the cards for us this year if he declares and I really, really want him.

I think moving Webb to free safety would actually benefit our defense greatly in the long run if we can keep Graham. Webb didnt appear to be as quick this year in the slot, so giving him free range at free safety with Elam at strong safety could be a great combo, especially because both can tackle well. Then, imo no matter what anyone says, were going to have to learn to trust Jimmy as a #1 corner because thats what he's going to become. I just worry the ravens are going to do the same thing the Eagles did to Asomugh in making him play zone too much where his skill set is clearly meant for man to man. Then depending on comp picks we could go offense early then possibly even double up on corners with a big guy like fuller from VA tech in the 2nd and maybe someone like Davis from Auburn or that guy from Alabama in the 4th. Just thinking if the Ravens take a hard stance now and decide on moving Webb to safety, allowing Jimmy to be the press coverage #1, keeping graham in the slot, and drafting a big corner I think the defense could be better for it. There will obviously be some growing pains but having Elam in the proper position and Webb back there to direct the secondary I think this could be a decent direction for the defense to go

Well, that's not very nice to Jimmy, now is it? ;)
