Myth: we are capable of fun and entertaining discussion without derailing every thread to a Flacco is awesome/sucks thread

LMAO!  I was just thinking of posting something similar. It is getting out of hand and ridiculous.

Didn't realize this myth was widely held, but your "fact" is opinion in my opinion.

I disagree, I debunked a myth(glad you don't hear it because I do) with a fact. Do you need more examples other than Jimmy Smith? There are plenty. I don't believe it's my opinion that there are average players that turn into elite players after having an average first season.

I think he means that it is an opinion to say Jimmy struggled as a rookie. He did at times, but looked great at others. Overall Jimmy played pretty well.

OK I guess that's arguable. I'm a huge Jimmy fan , and never lost faith in him but even I thought he struggled but showed flashes just like Elam in his first year.

The fact is you can't call a player a bust after year one. That's all I'm saying haha. I see your posts around here and I think you agree.

Would be nice to see a few more of these, if only to keep the thread visible. I've noticed some recent posts that included the myths about time of possession and Oher's penalties.

I think it takes a bit of time to research the facts, so that discourages people from posting the "buster" part.

hell ya...if it is rumor, this post will be packed!.

Here's a myth imo. We are not rebuilding. I truly believe we are. Not too say that is bad or we will be Jacksonville level bad. Just saying for sustained success we will need two note off seasons imo.

Myth: The Patriots will surpass the Ravens as the team with the highest playoff winning percentage historically because of their 5 consecutive playoff appearances if they make it to the Super Bowl this season.

Fact: The only team that could have challenged our 'Best Playoff Winning Percentage in NFL History' this year would have been the Packers (currently 2nd) had they won out.

Myth: Flacco just needs help. he'll be 'elite' with a new OC, new lineman, new WRs, new QB coach.

Fact: Flacco is the 2nd worst starting QB in NFL. Flacco has the worst stats to payroll(20.3m 2013) ratio in NFL.

Look it up. Stats don't lie.

Fact:  Flacco and Peyton Manning are tied for career post season victories. Look it up. Stats don't lie.

Myth: the defense was worn out in the 4th quarter because the offense couldn't stay on the field.

Fact: TOP was generally in our favor going into the 4th quarter and didn't shift until the defense gave up a long drive. Also fact: the overall TOP for the year was darn near even.

More sad, related facts from today's Late For Work:

The Ravens defense set an “unwanted” team record by allowing 134 points in the fourth quarter, the most in team history. “It was strange to see the Ravens defense play solid for three quarters and fall apart when the team needed it the most,” Hensley wrote. “In the first three quarters, the Ravens had the sixth-best defense in the red zone (allowing touchdowns 48.4 percent of the time). In the fourth quarter, the Ravens had the fifth-worst defense inside the 20-yard line (66.7 percent).”  [ESPN]

True. That's a fact as sad as it is. I believe we find away to improve in this area in 2014 and we'll rank as a top 5 defense in all catergories.

Myth: Harbaugh is the reason the defense has been more conservative since Rex left.

Reality: Teams that blitz more often also risk more big plays and easy reads against them. Great defenses don't have to blitz and getting a pass rush with four is the best thing any defense could hope for. (the 2000 Ravens were able to stay in their base defense most of the time because they were so talented)

Myth: Torrey Smith is not a true number one receiver.

Reality: He led the Ravens this year in receiving and had over 1,000 yards. He's the Ravens best receiver and he like every other receiver struggled in certain games due to factors both in and out of his control.

Myth: Ozzie Newsome can't draft good receivers

Reality: Although Newsome has missed on some of the receivers he's drafted, so has every other GM in the league. Don't forget that the Lions drafted Roy Williams, Charles Rogers and Mike Williams in the first round before they hit on Calvin Johnson. Sheer volume helps your odds, but other teams also tend to give their young players more playing time and thus have developed their young talent.

Myth: Flacco is overpaid

Reality: Matt Ryan, Jay Cutler, Tony Romo, Sam Bradford and Phillip Rivers all make about the same amount as Flacco and have yet to win a Superbowl. Some of them haven't even won or played in a playoff game. Wait until Kaepernick, Wilson, Dalton and Luck get their big pay days and it won't seem like such a big deal.

Myth: The 2013 season was a disaster

Reality: Despite losing two hall-of-famers, their leading receiver and their starting TE they managed to get within one game of the playoffs and two games of winning the division. This team has been in the post-season for the last 5 years and this year there was just a little too much for them to overcome. This was not a rebuilding year, it was a transition year. This team is still a contender and will be as long as Flacco is at QB.

Myth: Harbaugh is the only coach who hires all of his buddies

Reality: All head coaches hire coaches they know and have worked with, but Harbaugh happens to know nearly everyone in the coaching ranks either through his own experiences, his brother Jim's or his dad Jack. Most of Billick's hire's were people he knew as well. Many GM's hire a head coach and allow them to assemble their own staff. It is not unusual at all for a head coach to bring in people who have worked with him or people he knows. Don't forget that Harbaugh knew Rex as well, which is why Rex stayed at all after Billick was fired. Very rarely to coaches bring in someone they have no history with. The reality is that nearly all of the coaches in the league know each other and there's a John's circle of known commodities is even larger than most.

Myth: The Ravens need to become a passing team

Reality: The teams that are successful consistently usually have balance on offense. In order to be successful the offense must be able to do both reasonably well. Granted the rules are geared toward passing, but running the ball is still an important element to any offensive attack (screen passes are essentially long hand-offs and could be considered part of the running game)

actually mod 3 I was one that perpetrated that myth too I thought it was allot more

Myth: Flacco's contract has crippled this team and is the reason we got rid of all the players last year and won't be able to retain players this year because of it .

http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/baltimore-ravens/joe-flacco/  pay attention to cap hit number ....I would copy the graphic but mobile is not letting me

Hm, well for this year it was a false assumption/ But next year that jumps to 14, then 28 in 2016. With Sizzle's cap and all the other guys we would need/want to retain, then it's higher.

of course, if his play was better this would be all "worth it" - but right now (or rather, in 2013) it wasn't. Sure, there were other factors to that, but simply just watching him and him alone, it did not scream worth it in my opinion (looking at last year's play alone).

Let's hope we get him help though. otherwise, it just makes that contract look worse. :)

I'm going to dispute this and provide proof. out of 20 wideouts drafted by ozzie in the history of the team. 1 has had over 1000 yards in one season and that was Torrey

I was stunned when I read this . it didn't seem this bad I knew we tended to collapse in the fourth quarter but not this bad

Just to expound on this...........

Myth - The offense is solely to blame for our .500 record and for the Team missing the playoffs.

Fact - The D folded late in many games and failed to give the Team a chance to win some of the close games that were lost. It can be said that if we win 2 or 3 of those close games early on we would have won the division and made the playoffs.

Fact: an NFL game has 4 quarters at minimum.

judging based on 1 quarter is short sighted to say the least.....

Another interesting and obvious fact;

There is generally an ebb and flow to any game and the score at the end of the game is what determines a win/loss. If you screw up during the course of a game there is always time to recover and win. But if you fail at the end, you usually lose.   ;)

no you are wrong.

the way you play during the WHOLE game determines a win/loss.

otherwise what is the point of playing a whole game if it all comes down to 1 or 2 drives.

when 1 part is doing its job for 75% of the time they still did a better job and has far less of the blame then the part that only did their job 25% of the time.

when the offense has 10 drives and 2 TD they have a 20% succes rate.

when the defense has 10 drives and allows 4 TD they have a 60% succes rate.

score might not say so but a deeper look will tell you more.

it goes even deeper when you start to account that 2 of the TD the defense allowed where because of a short field tnx to a turnover by the offense and  1 of the TD off the offense came on a short field created by a turnover by the defense.....

now this is just a general example and the reality will differ but i hope you and others get the point.

No one fully blamed the offense but they deserve a fair share of the blame.

While you have a somewhat valid point, it's not wrong to think that you can suck during the course of a game(low success rate/turnovers), but pull it together at the end to pull out a win.  We did it time and again in 2012 and winning those types of games is what got us into the tournament. In 2013 that didn't happen. We lost three or four close games where there the O caught stride towards the end giving the Team a chance to win, only to have the D allow long, time consuming scoring drives.

While it's true that events during the course of a game do have an effect on the outcome, if you do not perform at the end of a close game, none of what happened earlier means squat. The score when the clock reads 00:00 determines the W/L.

Agree and I don't think anyone could rationalize that the offense didn't suck and failed miserably in the red zone on a regular basis. But there were games where they recovered and put things together at the end of games, only to have the D fold like a wet paper bag.

the only reason the offense had a chance to recover and put things together at the end of the game was tnx to the defense in the first place.

in order for the offense to have the time to get things together and team have any chance of winning is that defense was actually getting stops through out the game...

even if they did [profanity deleted] the bed on the final drive they still did a better job then offense who [crap]ted the bed through the whole game....

the defense should not have been put in that situation in the first place.

Right. And no matter how you have performed the rest of the game if you have a chance to win and don't do your job at the end of the game when it counts most, you have failed.

if you wait till the end of a game to win it you set yourself up to fail.....

no matter how you wanna spin it most of the blame goes to whoever failed the most that game and not who failed on the last drive....

you wanna blame the defense then fine, just make sure you blame the offense more then we cool.

just dont act like the offense did their job and the defense failed.

they both failed ,  just 1 more then the other which is suprisingly has always been the case with the ravens....

somethings never change lol
