Keeping Jim Caldwell: Pros and Cons

Does he have college experience? Either way, I could see him doing pretty well there.

He was HC at Wake Forest back in the 90's

Rapaport is reporting that the Redskins are interviewing him also.

I'm beginning to think we're not going realise what we missed until he's gone.

You know, out of all our coaches, Detroit decides to interview our OC. You would think they would like to interview our ST coach, not our OC.

Not necessarily.  Caldwell has HCing experience with the Colts.

So the Xs and Os will probably be fairly different, but he'll probably be familiar with the lockerroom management stuff. If he does leave, I wish him the very best.

How is it, our offense was amazing during our SB run and nobody wanted him. Every time our Defense does well, teams line up to make him their HC. Yet, somehow simply odd is that the year our offense sucked, everyone now wants to talk to him. What was it about our offense that made people go, we want to have a terrible offense in 2014 and Caldwell is our guy to do that.

By now pretty much everyone has heard that Harbaugh is not planning to make staff changes, so we can assume Caldwell gets a 2nd year. Is that really a bad thing?

Before the Camectomy last year, Caldwell had never been an OC at any level. He was a QB coach and a HC, but never an OC.

Is Caldwell smart enough/flexible enough to make adjustments to how things were done this year? I've never heard any stories about him being stubborn. I have heard that Joe likes working with Caldwell.

Is keeping Caldwell the worst idea ever?

hopefully caldwell will get LIONs job, and we get chizdinski as OC, i just want an offense that is not predictable , creative and makes adjustments on the fly,

JO, you seem to be pissed that other teams want Caldwell.  Why is that?  Thought we wanedt him gone?  And if that is the case, who cares "why" teams are interested in him?  Just take the man!  LOL!!

No I'm not mad. I'm just referring to how bad our O was this year and why would other teams want to have as bad of an offense as we did. I'm fine if that's what they want but I'm just curious lol.

I don't care how many interviews he does, just one of those teams, take him.

I see.  I couldn't care less actually as to why a team is interested in Caldwell or want to talk with him.  Good riddance is my take on it and let's get some fresh meat in here at the OC spot.  lol!

I'd actually like to keep Caldwell but not as an offensive coordinator but as a QB coach.

Great QB coach, and it's not his fault he got thrown into being the OC when he maybe wasn't prepared. Good for him getting these interviews though, seems like a great guy. I do feel a forced change at OC would be a great thing.

I don't know what to think of Jim Caldwell as an OC. He was more creative calling plays than Cam and less reluctant in trusting Joe, but who wouldn't be compared to Cameron?

Caldwell was the HC of Peyton Manning, who is arguably the most intelligent QB ever and became the OC of Joe Flacco, when Joe got crazy-all-time-"I'm making a historic playoff run"-hot.

He couldn't coach the Colts without Manning and struggled, when the Ravens offense cooled down.

A real mixed bag of a carreer, if you ask me.

I'm sure the discussion has begun on a replacement.  Wouldn't you like to be a fly on the wall in that room.

I too am not as opposed to bringing Caldwell back as others..he had alot of variables that were out of his control this year...however his situational play calling was abysmal at times.. I just would love one of these known named OCs that have experience.

But then u homers would have another excuse for Flacco.."hes learning a new system..give him time!!"

As long as he isn't our OC next year, I could care less where he ends up.

If he'd like to stay on as QB coach, then I would be happy, but I doubt that will happen.

I have said from the day Castillo was hired he will be the next OC, and I sure hope I am wrong.  But when you look at the fact that the position of "run game coordinator" was created to bring him in, the fact that Caldwell made no bones about opening up the proposition that he would be open for a HC job in one of his first press conferences this season, and Harbs has done nothing but sing Castillo's praises since he's been here,(see yesterday's press conference) and the fact that Harbs "hid" Castillo when the heat was on him for the failure of the run game...the handwriting is on the wall!   And if he does become OC I will be physically sick!!! lol

I was willing to give Caldwell another chance since we had a shortened off season due to the SB and he didn't have time to revamp the playbook, but the biggest reason is that I think there have been way too many cooks in the kitchen on the offensive side of the ball this year...and it resulted in a "confused" offense on the field.  I have wondered several times this season if Caldwell was an OC in name only.  I would love to see what he would do here if he had complete control of the offensive game plan...and I don't think he ever did.

I'm with grapple Castillo is our next Oc. I would rather take Caldwell but I think this was determined  when he was first hired.

The person on here who said they might go for Jim Hostler has scared me because it's so spot on.

That, too, is my biggest fear. I don't think Castillo would get promoted after all the issues this year. Didn't that Preston article a little bit ago say Hostler was the one working with Caldwell to run the offense?

Hostler better be gone. I haven't seen a lick of improvement from any of our WR. In fact, he didn't even like our best WR--Torrey Smith--when he was a prospect. I don't like the guy at all and I've wanted him gone for years. I strongly dislike Jim Hostler.

I'd rather see Norv or Chud brought in for sure, but I'll be optimistic and say I could live with Castillo getting a shot. It sounds like the problem is less on him being a poor manager, but more that there was one chef too many and we needed a complex dish for table five pronto. I'm dubious about how even Sean Payton would have gone in that situation.

Like I say, I'd rather a more proven OC. That said, I'm not going to jump on the bandwagon of hating him right away. As long as the staff roles are clearly defined. Even the trainers need to have a clear jurisdiction at this point.

Hostler, on the other hand, sounds like he did less of what he got paid to do than Anquan Boldin did as a by-product of being on the team.
