2014 Coaching Carousel

I love Zimmer to the Vikings. I think he'll be a hell of a head coach. Also happy to get out of the division. They already got some young talent over there so a good draft this year and I think they could become playoff bound. Of course, assuming they get a better QB.

lol @ the browns. Only a year in and they already clean house without a legit QB.

I always say that I feel king of bad for them and their fans. I sometimes wonder if this team will ever be good. Take last year: they had an AFC North weaker than usual and failed to take advantage of it.

Will be very interesting to see Caldwell's Lions compete with the Vikes next year.  I wonder if Schaub Stafford will get off his butt and actually listen to Caldwell and attempt to develop as a QB.  If he does that, I think the Lions will be legit contenders next year - depending on how well their offseason goes.

You mean Stafford but I could Schaub in a Vikings uni on the other hand.

Yep - sorry, you are correct.

But I bet Schaub could do good in Minnesota if they don't draft someone. They should at least sign him to a 1 year deal and draft someone so they don't throw a room into the fire

I dunno. Fans from every other team he's coached with (Skins fans in particular) seem to hate him. Maybe 2010 was just a good year for him.

Or maybe it's the quality he was working with - 2001-2007 he did a good job IMO w/Hasslebeck - he took a 6th round Brett Favre backup and helped him to 3 probowls.  He was a poor HC in DC, but Jason Campbell specifically was playing well until he got fired, then tanked the rest of the season.  You saw what he did with Joe.  In KC he was again working with the likes of Matt Cassel, Tyler Palko, and Brady Quinn.  He's not HC material, but I think if you're trying to get Joe specifically to rebound, he's the guy that so far has gotten the most consistency from Joe in his career.  Zorn wouldn't be my first choice, but I think he'd be better than some of the other candidates being thrown around.

Lol Broncos OC Gase is withdrawing his name, via Schefter.

At this point, I'm sure they would pay anyone on here for a year to be their HC.

Im surprised Josh McDaniels wants to stay in New England, unless he truly thinks he is the successor to Belicheck and is just waiting?

That is assuming a successor to Belichick is needed.  I've always assumed he'll always be there.  Belichick can't be killed off by conventional means.

Seeing the news about the Browns makes me wonder what is making these candidates run far away from the team.  I don't think it's as simple as Chud being fired after only one year.  Are they calling Chud and he has a few things to say? Even if they're not calling, are they seeing that something is severely dysfunctional with the management?  Heck, maybe they aren't confident in who could be the next OC since Norv took off for the Vikings.

To be a fly on the wall during those interviews...

The Patriots OL coach of 30 years is retiring.  Wow.  I wonder if that affects what has traditionally been one of the best units in the league.  Based on his results, he was an incredibly good coach.

Also, they don't even know who the DC is since Horton went to Tennessee with Whisenhunt.

Here's an update from Schefter:

"I’ll say this on the Cleveland Browns. Expect the unexpected," said Schefter. "If they wanted to hire [Pettine] they could just go ahead and do that and maybe they still will. But me reading between the lines, they’re hopping around, they’re interviewing other candidates, they’re bouncing around the country. I think if Pettine were their guy it would just be over and done with. And the longer it goes on the less likely in my mind that Pettine becomes the guy.

Translation: They have no clue what they are doing.

So apparently Mike Munchak will be the Steelers' o-line coach.  Man, the one part of the Steelers team I could count on to be perennially bad, and he might fix it.

The Browns have ended their own misery and hired Mike Pettine as the 18th Head Coach in Franchise History. He is also the eighth Head Coach since 1999.

“We wanted to be thorough right from the start and we interviewed as many people as we could,” Banner said. “From that group, we hired the best individual for this job. Our players and fans are going to really enjoy Mike Pettine and his leadership style. We’re excited to have him out in front of our team, and we look forward to working closely with him.”

I like the bit where he said he wanted to be thorough and they interviewed as many people as they could.

Jim Schwartz is heading to Buffalo to be the new Bills DC, replacing Pettine.  Are they switching schemes (again)?

I know we are thrilled to have him…but I have some bad news for you….the Steelers O-line already showed significant improvement over the second half of this season….Ben's sacks were way down (only 11 of his 42 sacks over the last 8 games of the season, 2 games in that stretch with 0 sacks, 4 with 1 sack). Plus, Pouncey will be back to start 2014 under Munchak's tutelage. LeVeon Bell was pretty productive running the ball once he got healthy. The Steelers O actually looks like it is finally gelling under Haley. Adding Munchak is only one more piece in the equation.

The Browns had interest in Can Cameron for OC. If they weren't desperate before, they certainly are now.

Mario Williams will probally do better in a 4-3 scheme.

Also seems like the Vikes hired Kirby Wilson to be their RBs coach. Really like how the Vikes coaching staff is shaping up. Gotta feeling they're not going to be in the NFCNorth celler next year.

That's hilarious and also kinda sad,

I'm not a Norv fan, but he should have some success with Peterson and that OL with his scheme.  I'm a big Mike Zimmer fan though, and I actually like the Vikings as my NFC North team.  It's tough to predict who will be the bottom dweller in that division though, if they Vikings improve they should all be pretty competitive.  Each team has notable weaknesses, GB's offensive line, pretty much all of Chicago's defense, Minnesota's quarterback and defense, and Detroit with Matt Stafford.  Whichever team does the best job of addressing their issues should win.  That division could be competing with the NFC West for the best division in football.
