In Ozzie We Trust (2014 Edition) The Ravens Free Agency Thread

2,261 posts in this topic

Harbaugh says the Ravens have made "aggressive" offers to our free agents. Depending on the definition of aggressive, it seems to me Monroe is after the money as I'm sure Ozzie has offered him a fair enough deal. Like I said, watch some team over pay Monroe, we get a equal LT at a cheaper cost and Ozzie has the last laugh.

But if you think about it...we could get another Boldin or even better  with someone like Hakeem Nicks or  a rookie in the draft.

Yes dreaming is a good thing-I definitely think we should draft a WR with our first pick-lots of really good talent will be available for us at # 17. I don't think Nicks or even Avant is a smart $$ choice.

I would say Cortland Finnegan would be a  nice to sign but it seems like he doesn't have it any more.

My only concern with Hakeem Nicks is that he is a little injury prone...although he has never suffered a severe injury. Aside from that he is a very good WR1, with all the trimmings of an elite WR- he's speedy, great hands, great route runner, and a reliable playmaker all wrapped together. And considering he won't be in the market for a massive contract even though he is worth one...he is a steal.

Do you think if we lost out on Monroe to someone like Miami who would surely give him the $10M he wants, you think Ozzie would immediately hop on Branden Albert?

I can't see Nicks in Baltimore. He is not healthy and has too many long periods of inactivity. Although he has good hands he isn't really the answer IMO There are a couple of incredible talents that will be available for us in the draft. I have to believe we are moving in that direction. I can't see drafting an OT with our first pick since they usually take a couple years to evolve and we need a playmaker NOW!

Terrible offensive coordinator...

I wouldn't call him terrible. If there is one thing Cam is good at, it is developing his qbs. Look at Brees, Rivers, and Flacco. Granted once the qbs were developed he would not give them the reins of the offense which was his problem with us and I would imagine in San Diego as well. But then he goes to LSU and makes Mettenberger look somewhat decent which following him in previous years is fairly impressive. I mean I know a bit of it was Beckham and Landry but Cam helped him a lot as well I am sure. Cam did his job very well in turning Flacco into a franchise qb. He just does not know how to let the qb do their thing once they develop. He is a great person to teach and that's what he did but then he can't let the qb go. He is like that parent depressed that their kid is moving out and doesn't let them go on to bigger and better things lol. If I were a team with a rookie qb that needed to develop a bit and had no choice but to start, I would consider bringing him in. Then when they start butting heads, I take it that the qb is developed and it is time for Cam to move on lol. We did give him a Super Bowl ring however so I am sure he is happy for that.

What are you talking about "long periods of inactivity"? He's missed 10 games in five years. He appears on the injury sheet a lot and plays injured, but he doesn't miss a lot of games.

I mean in gametime production. He may start a game but usually leaves with some minor injury or another it seems. He is a good receiver don't get me wrong but there is exciting talent in the draft at # 17

Receivers usually take some time to develop (Roddy White, Dez Bryant, Alshon Jeffrey, Justin Blackmon) and so it's not a bad idea to grab someone like Nicks to hold the place until the rookie is ready.

We do need a playmaker immediately and Nicks can make plays but have you looked at Marquise Lee from USC at #17/ Man that guy is a game changer

He should be a QB coach then. He was the most vanilla and conservative offensive coordinator ever and as a result our offense was at the middle or back of the pack. He held Joe waaayyy back.

When you fire an OC and promote someone who has little to no coordinating experience and you win a SB thanks to your offense...you know your previous OC was awful.

Yeah I won't excuse the play calling, that got bland. Maybe qb coach would be a better fit for him.

An underrated player that i would be interested in taking a flyer on would be Jeff Cumberland.  He has good size and speed, is a good blocker, and shouldn't cost too much to aquire.  Him paired with Pitta could be a good tandem.  I know his stats aren't anything special, but Geno Smith sucks something aweful so that was to be expected.  But the Jets rely heavily on the run game and he was a big part of that and too be honest, with all the uncertainty we have on the o-line (especially OT), we need all the help we can get.  Any thoughts?

Not a bad signing. As you say, we need a blocker at TE who can be a somewhat effective receiver and Cumberland fits the bill. Who knows maybe we get him. Right player, Right price
