I think he'd be more of a guy that you call up midseason if Flacco has to miss a few games and Tyrod and/or Wenning just aren't capable of keeping the team competitive.

We already know Tyrod is not that good. He only can be used as a read option QB. And Wenning has a noodle for an arm! We should have drafted AJ McCarron than!

Becuase he knows the Cowboys suck and are not going anywhere!

But wouldn't he had known that before he signed with them  in 2012? It's quite possible that he just was tired of The Cowboys coaching staff after two years but I get the feeling this guy really was tired of football.

No. AJ had the noodle arm. Keith has an above average arm who needs to work on his deep accuracy. He fits the system Gary Kubiak runs but needs a season to develop as a backup. I'm worried if Flacco goes down, but if any franchise QB goes down, the season is usually over anyway(and the Packers are an exception to the rule since they played in a crappy division)

Bears with Josh McCown, or NE with Matt Cassel

I'm not particularly interested in this idea. Not only is he retiring but I just think we don't need to spend the money on it.

Why not?  And while we're at it, let's give Brett Favre a call.  I'm sure he'd like another shot at a ring as well.

You want your backup to be as close to the starter as possible so you don't miss a beat if he goes down. I reckon we target Troy Aikman.

I hear ya. We'll go after Fran Tarkenton then. Vet minimum, one year. He'll want a ring, so there's no reason he wouldn't want to play for us.

He'd be an upgrade over Flacco anyway. ;)

Like others have said it doesn't seem as though he's really interested in playing football anymore. I'll agree with the OP that Tyrod isn't very good but let's not forget about Wenning.

Edit: Orton does seem like a quality backup though, so if we can convince him to play and sign him to a no-guarantee 1-year vet. minimum deal I wouldn't be against it. Flacco won't play all 16 games forever, and I don't know about Wenning but I've seen enough of Tyrod to know that he cannot be trusted to lead this team as a starter.

Kyle Orton turned down like 3m to be the backup in Dallas so he could retire, he's not coming here for the vet min. Also, I hate this notion that Tyrod Taylor sucks. He doesn't suck ... he hasn't been given enough opportunities to prove he sucks, the guy has hardly played. He's athletically gifted, and young. He's been sitting behind Flacco his entire career, you can't say he sucks!

Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Marshall

Randy Moss and Welker + HOF coach.

I'm not saying they should be the starters over their current starters, but it's not totally unheard of for a backup to perform well. There are a few more examples I can think of.

I don't think the Ravens would be on that list of teams that performed well with their backup

Any other veterans out there? Decent ones, not like Josh Freeman

The only veteran backups that could be decent are Kevin Kolb and David Garrard. Though I'd be inclined to give Wenning a shot before calling either of them.

Well, there not exactly a team that's known to rise to the occasion or win the big important games, including playoff games.

Could just need a contender at this point in his career. Not saying we should sign him, but I would not mind a veteran backup

If he thinks about quitting and retiring only to come back again and jump on somebodies bandwagon to sort of get dragged to a superbowl without really doing anything for it then I don't want him here. Let him retire, that's me at least.

I think this is Tyrod's last chance. I can't bad mouth the pervious offense when it comes to Flacco and other offensive guy about how it held them back and act as if it didn't do the same for Tyrod. Taking deep drops and holding the ball will never be Tyrod's game, however now with Kubes, he actually fits this offense well. Or should I say, he "should" fit this offense well. He's more of a dink and dump type QB who can beat you with the occasional long ball and of course his feet. The biggest thing I see Tyrod struggling with in this offense is being able to go through his reads quickly and accurately without wanting to run if the first guy isn't open. I also think Kubes can do wonders with Tyrod in terms of his footwork. So with all that, I think this is a make or break Preseason for Tyrod. He has to show people around the NFL that he's capable of being a quality QB and he's not just and athlete playing QB.

I personally don't see him making the team this year, but if he has a strong preseason he might stick around for 1 more year or even if cut someone might give him a chance.

I don't see a way Tyrod doesn't make the team right now with what I've heard about Wenning.  Apparently he hadn't done well at all in OTAs.  Maybe he'll turn things around in TC, but if these are the 3 QB options we have come the final cutdown, Tyrod has to make it on the basis on Wenning really struggling.

From what I heard Wenning really struggled early on, which is expect but really started playing much better as the OTA/Minicamp schedule wore on. From what I hear his, struggle stemmed from tying his reads into his footwork which is understandable. I also heard that Tyrod wasn't so hot either and that's a big reason why they were looking at Yates if he became a FA. So I definitely wouldn't just count on Tyrod being the backup QB, he'll have to work and show he's improved in some key areas.

The things that worry me about Wenning are things that I think are going to persist going forward, for at least this year.  The one thing I heard that absolutely terrified me is that he's not willing to step up into the pocket at all.  He's not even allowed to be hit as the QB so I'd be scared to see what that's like in an actual game.  Because of that, I read a lot of reports that said he was missing a lot of easy throws because he was continually throwing off of his back foot.  I'm sure we'd love to have another option, and I don't see any out there.  Provided that these 3 guys are our options come final cutdown, I don't see any way that Tyrod isn't on this team unless Wenning magically solves his pocket issues in the next month or so.

Well much like everything else, I'll wait until I can put my eyes on the guys to make my prediction of who will or won't be on the team. My point now is that Tyrod isn't a lock to be our backup, he'll have to work hard and have a solid preseason. I don't think the Ravens are tied to the fact that Tyrod is their backup even if he doesn't have a good TC or preseason. Again, both Harbs and Kubes have shown they aren't afraid to go with young inexperience QBs as backups. But we'll see.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong.  I don't think Tyrod is anywhere close to a lock.  I just don't see Wenning as the guy supplanting him.  It sounds like he has way too many issues to be the primary backup this year.

Yeah but Tyrod wasn't very impressive either his rookie year. He made the team as the only back-up QB. I'm not really sure Wenning will beat out Tyrod but I'm playing devil's advocate here.

This is why I want a veteran to compete, maybe someone like Garrard who has experience

I still find that very surprising.  I wasn't able to watch much preseason/early season action in 2011 so I can't speak to his play then, admittedly.  Overall though, even though I'm not a huge Tyrod fan, I still think he's a much better option than Wenning at this point.
