Ravens Still Lack Discipline

16 posts in this topic

Mr. Miyagi would not be happy. Last year the Ravens ranked 6th in penalties totaling 107 for 873 yards. This year? Not too much better. 13 games into the season, we are again ranked 6th with 87 for 671 yards. We are on pace to finish with 107 regular season penalties, just like last year... In fact, we've ranked in the bottom 8 teams for 4 of the past 5 years. Some may try to argue that the Ravens physical style of play tends to lead to more penalties, but the cold hard truth is that good teams don't give away yardage. Look at last year's playoff teams; only 4 of the 12 ranked in the bottom half of the league and the Giants and the Pats were both top 10. This was one aspect of the team I had hoped went the way of Billick. We all can agree that Harbaugh has done an AMAZING job at bring this team of individuals together, and I commend him for that. It was no easy task and if all we lose is McAllister, well done sir. But still, where is the discipline?

there is a lot of youth on offense and lot of fire and desire on defense. that'll create penalties

Penalties are not a direct reflection of discipline or lack thereof. A high penalty count can be the result of having such a young team at key positons, learning a new offensive system, and also some bad call from the refs. Now don't get me wrong i too feel as though we could do a better job of keeping the penalties down, but i don't think this team lacks discipline.

In my opinion, this is a very well disciplined team. The way this team has stuck together is proof of that in my eyes. Here are a few moments from the season where i think this team showed their discipline.

Having there bye week moved to week 2- In years past i think we would have heard some grumbling from players about the NFL not liking us, and we could have had an excuse to play poorly vs the Browns. Instead this team just went out and handled their business.

The TERRIBLE call late in the Titans game- We have all seen this team blow up over bad calls like that in the past (Det 05, NE 07), however this team just said their peiece and moved on.

Losing 3 in a row- This team could have easily went into a downward spiral just like last season. Instead this team remained focused and not only went out and beat the next 4 teams on the schedule, they dominated

Losing big to NYG- At that point many people were ready to say that the Ravens were flawed, couldn't beat a quality team, and would not make the playoffs. Well this team just went back to work and kept it business as usual.

The Wash game being moved to PrimeTime- Once again this is something that would have probably effected the Ravens squad in years past. This team just viewed it as another game, another road to cross to get to their goal. This team played lights out in that game, but u didn't see dancing, we didn't appear to be a bunch of nuckle heads that were just talented enough to win games. We looked like a TEAM that played for each other and played for one common goal.

There have been plenty of other times this team could have blew up, but have remained focus and business like. Hell even Willis McGahee, as bad of a season as he is having he still seems to be doing what he can to help, like giving McClain and Rice tips to be successful. I think this team is very much discipline, and has the chance to be one of the better Ravens teams in recent history.

Now remember everything in this post is just my opinion, and with that opinoin i think that this Ravens team is a direct reflection of it's Head Coach.

Do you see a undisciplined team out on the field during game time? NO! You can not count the penalties and say the team lacks discipline without looking at the game play. From watching our new coach on the sideline, I think a undisciplined player would be sitting on the bench rather than playing. Tell me how many personal foul 15 yard penalties we have and where we are ranked in that department, other wise I do not think your point is valid. Hey aren't we 9-4? At 9-4 we some how find yet another topic to cry and complain about, WOW! :o

I agree with you, I think i've seen us REALLY clean up with our pentalties. I mean we havent had any 15yarders in awhile.. just false starts and offsides.. maybe a tripping or holding here or there but nothing major. Its actually nice to watch a game and not see a flag thrown our way on every play :) I agree about Harbs too, coach wouldnt deal with that.. you'd be out in a heartbeat.

So stop complaining and be happy that your team is 9-4... GEEZE!!!!

Haha very true, I when I would watch or attend a Ravens game and see a flag thrown, I would say oh hell thats definitely on us. I think we have cleaned up alot on both sides of the ball as well. The great thing is, no matter what, if we get a penalty to push our O 5yds back or the oppositions O 5yds forward, we are prepared and equiped with the tools to get ourselves out of those situations!

And latley it's been more on the opposing team. Maybe the officials dont hate us so much anymore considering we have Harbaugh as a coach now?

I know this is a college football comparison, but Univ. of Florida gators rank in the top 10 in penalties, yet they are one of the best teams in the country. Just saying

A lot of the penalties are getting racked up on Special Teams. And despite the 9-4 record, the Ravens HAVE TO get better on ST, or it's going to come back and snake bite them now that we're playing all the better teams. A team can get by with those sorts of mistakes when playing sub-500 teams; but it's not going to fly against the best teams, especially in the post season. And even in the regular season, look how much that stupid penalty by JJ in the first meeting with the Steelers looks now.

He's won a year-supply of Alpo dog biscuits courtesy of Alpo dog food. He's also been entered for a chance to win the grand prize; a trip to two to see Hannah Montana perform live in Ausitn, TX.

We thank all of our contestants for playing. And we encourage all our viewers to spay and neuter their animals.
